28
I think you're going to love it.
29
Let's get started with my story for today, which is about trying something new.
30
So about three weeks ago, my wife and I both signed up for gym memberships.
31
And not only just a basic gym membership, but we signed up for personal training classes, one -on -one classes with a personal trainer.
32
And I'm going to tell you that story now because it's pretty funny.
33
There are some really funny moments and some embarrassing things
34
that I went through in my PT classes that I think are funny and I'd like to share with you.
35
And I think it's just something that many people go through when trying something new.
36
Whenever we're rookies at something, beginners at something, there are often some funny or embarrassing situations that we have to go through because,
37
well, it's new and we don't know what we're doing, right?
38
We're amateurs.
39
And so, yeah, I have a few of those stories that I'll share with you here today.
40
So to start at the beginning,
41
essentially my wife and I decided to join the gym just because we're starting to get older now.
42
I mean, we're not too old.
43
We're middle -aged, I suppose.
44
We're in our early 40s.
45
However, the older you get, the more your muscle deteriorates.
46
Deteriorates.
47
Deteriorates means to become weaker and to break down.
48
So as you age, the muscle that you have deteriorates and breaks down.
49
And I have to be honest and say that I'm not really a super strong, muscly guy anyways to begin with.
50
So I probably don't have that much muscle to start with.
51
So as I get older, if I lose that muscle, well, that's just going to be bad for my health in the future.
52
I want to be able to be strong and mobile in the future,
53
be able to walk without too many issues and just have a happy and healthy life as I get older going forward.
54
So that was really the main motivation for signing up for the gym.
55
It's not like I really wanted to become a bodybuilder or anything, or I really wanted to have an amazing body.
56
I mean, if those things come as a side effect, okay, cool.
57
I guess that would be cool, but that's not my main motivation or main focus.
58
And for my wife, her motivation is pretty much essentially the same thing.
59
She just wants to be healthy as she ages and going forward, have a happy and healthy life.
60
But she's also a little bit concerned about some high blood sugar readings that she's been having recently.
61
At our home, we have one of those little needle guns
62
that you can prick your finger with and check your blood sugar with, with a blood sugar monitor.
63
And we do that from time to time just to make sure we're in a healthy range
64
and usually i'm pretty healthy in
65
that regard i don't know why however my wife is a little bit higher than she would like
66
so she's not really quite in the danger danger zone yet however it's something that's on her radar
67
that she's worried about to an extent and And so...
68
As we were searching for some strategies that you can do to improve the glucose, is what we call it, the glucose in your blood,
69
that sugar level in your blood, one of the suggestions was actually going to the gym and working out so you can build some muscle.
70
I'm not a scientist, so I don't know exactly why this works, but apparently if you have more muscle mass, then it's good for lowering your blood sugar.
71
So I guess those were our main motivations, just being happy and healthy and mobile going forward as we age
72
and also to maintain and perhaps even improve my wife's blood sugar
73
so that it doesn't keep growing and getting higher and higher
74
so we live in an area of the city here we live in Seoul South Korea
75
which is this huge city of course
76
and one of the things that's great about living in a big city is the convenience especially
77
if you live in a very population dense area which we do
78
so that means that very close to where we live probably within just a one kilometer radius
79
if we drew a circle one kilometer wide around our home,
80
then I didn't count, but probably between 10 to 20 gyms are in that area.
81
Like there are gyms all over the place.
82
So we had too many options, really.
83
It's almost too many options.
84
And so we were researching about what gym would be the best fit for us.
85
And there are just a range of gyms in our area we went
86
and we toured a couple of them we saw the cheapest one first
87
because both of us have the idea and this might change going forward
88
but our initial idea is just to go to the gym maybe twice
89
or three times a week i don't think we'll be going
90
there every single day we already do other exercise i like to run my wife likes to swim
91
so our idea was to supplement our regular main exercise with the gym so we weren't expecting to go there
92
five or six days a week
93
so i thought well let's just go to a cheap gym that'll be okay we can do our workouts
94
and come home and that'll be that so we checked out the cheap gym
95
and the cheap gym in our neighborhood is just this huge
96
gym i think that's how they're able to give a cheaper membership price is it's huge
97
and because it's huge there's a lot of equipment
98
but there's a lot of people there as well
99
and it felt almost more like a warehouse than a gym so that was okay
100
but i'm a little bit of a self -conscious person in the gym i don't know about you
101
if you've ever worked out in a gym but
102
because i don't have a lot of experience doing it it can feel a little bit uncomfortable for me
103
and especially when there are many many people around then sometimes it stresses me out to be honest
104
so you gotta weigh the pros
105
and the cons the pro okay it's a cheaper price the con there are many people around
106
and okay so that was our first option
107
and then we went to another gym
108
that was again pretty close to our place not too far however it was underground
109
so it was in the basement of the building
110
and I didn't really like that it felt a little stuffy
111
and just a little claustrophobic being in the basement I don't
112
know for whatever reason I thought it would be better
113
if you could open the windows
114
and not just have to rely on the air conditioning get
115
some circulation I'm sure working out in a basement is fine
116
but for me it just felt a little claustrophobic and damp
117
and just not so great in there yeah so
118
that was the second one we checked out and then the third gym
119
that we checked out is the one
120
that is closest to our home it's probably only about 200 meters away from our front door
121
so it's very very convenient to visit it's on maybe the second
122
or third floor of a building
123
so it's not in the basement it's got lots of windows lots of natural light
124
so these were the pros the cons of this gym it's
125
more expensive I would say this is more of a boutique style gym so it's smaller however it's not so busy.
126
So that issue that I feel of being stressed out around a bunch of other people while exercising, especially as a noob when I don't know exactly what I'm doing,
127
I don't really feel that at this gym because there aren't a ton of people, which is nice.
128
However, because of that luxury, because I think I'm not alone.
129
I think a lot of people are like me.
130
They maybe like working out more by themselves.
131
I guess it's case by case, person by person, but I have that feeling that is the case.
132
So maybe because of that, it is a little bit more expensive.
133
However, while we were talking about our options and discussing it together, my wife and I decided that probably if we're going to stick with going to the gym,
134
and to stick with something means to keep doing it without quitting, right?
135
Continuously.
136
So if we're going to continuously go to the gym, make a good habit of exercising at the gym often, then we must choose a gym that's close to our place.
137
If we choose a gym that's far away, and even those other two gyms that we checked out, they weren't too far away,
138
but we had to walk maybe 10 or 15 minutes to get to them.
139
Again, as the crow flies, they're not very far.
140
And as the crow flies is a great expression, a kind of idiomatic expression that means just the distance between one point and another point.
141
You could imagine a crow, which is one of those blackbirds, you know, the blackbird, the crow.
142
if it were to fly from point A to point B, it would just fly in a straight line, right?
143
So in terms of pure distance from our home to those gyms we checked out, it's not very far, just a few hundred meters.
144
However, there are traffic lights and some very long traffic lights that you have to wait for.
145
And so that adds up and some congestion, like lots of people.
146
And yeah, it just takes more time than you would expect to walk to a gym and any excuse you can get, I think when you're exercising, you're like, ah, it's kind of far.
147
It's kind of busy.
148
It's just so easy to put off and delay.
149
So for that reason, we decided that we should go with the closest gym to our home.
150
And even though it costs more money, that's eventually what we decided to do.
151
Now, we tried the gym first.
152
We signed up for a tour and a consultation.
153
We met the staff there and they introduced the facility to us, explained about the different programs they offer, the equipment that they have,
154
and they gave us a consultation and met with us and gave us their sales spiel.
155
Sales spiel is, you know, when you go to any place where they want to sell you something, a car dealership, a furniture store, a gym, right?
156
The gym staff are trying to sell you the membership.
157
The sales staff at a car dealership, they're trying to sell you the car.
158
So the spiel is kind of like that routine speech that the salesperson gives every customer.
159
They have it memorized and they can just say it very quickly
160
and very smoothly to try and convince you to sign up for the gym
161
or to buy the car or whatever it may be.
162
so the staff at the gym gave us the sales spiel
163
and uh i have to say i wasn't quite convinced yet i heard the spiel
164
and i was like okay thanks and then we went home
165
and thought about it and then i actually took advantage of a trial personal trainer session
166
that they offered they had a pretty discounted price i think
167
it was maybe less than ten dollars american for a one
168
hour session with one of their personal trainers to see if that would work for you.
169
And so I did that session and I thought it was good.
170
I liked the trainer.
171
We vibed.
172
We got along pretty well.
173
And so after doing that, I thought, okay, let's do it.
174
Let's sign up.
175
So my wife and I, we both signed up for, actually, we're sharing a set of 10 personal training sessions with this trainer.
176
So I'm going to do five and my wife is going to do five.
177
And the idea is that hopefully we'll only need to do five sessions and we'll learn a good exercise routine,
178
learn how to use the equipment.
179
And then after we can do it more on our own, personal training is great.
180
I have now completed four, four sessions with the trainer and they've been really fun and really helpful and really hard so far.
181
However, it is really quite expensive, so I don't think I can do it for too much more longer.
182
But yeah, so far, so good.
183
And my wife has been enjoying her sessions as well.
184
We both do them at different times, so we're not really overlapping.
185
We thought about doing them together, to be honest.
186
We asked the trainer, is it a good idea to do them together?
187
But we both have different goals with the kind of training
188
that we want to do
189
and just some of the movements are different for the physiology between my body
190
and my wife's body so for that reason the trainer suggested doing them separately
191
and this is a little bit of an aside
192
but another reason why I wanted to sign up
193
and do the personal training sessions as opposed to just going to the gym
194
and figuring things out myself or watching a YouTube video and then trying to emulate what I saw on the YouTube video, because I think that's another.
195
popular way
196
that people exercise these days is instead of having a personal trainer you can just watch a tutorial on youtube
197
and then practice yourself
198
so instead of doing those the reason why i wanted a personal trainer was for the korean practice
199
because what awesome korean practice right i get to talk with a korean trainer in my target language the language
200
that i'm learning as a second language, Korean, for an hour at a time in a real -world situation.
201
Actually, over the summer, I did some online tutoring sessions with two different Korean tutors, and those were really cool.
202
I found them to be super, super helpful and super, super fun to just chat online, one -on -one, in a video call with a tutor for an hour each week.
203
That was great.
204
However, it's so easy almost in that kind of situation because there are no distractions.
205
You're focused one -on -one.
206
The tutor is using a good microphone and me too.
207
I'm using a good microphone and I have good headphones so the audio is clear and everything.
208
But I get stressed with my Korean, maybe you when you're learning English as well, is that sometimes when we go out into the real world,
209
then it can be a lot more difficult call it.
210
You have these chaotic situations.
211
You have people who are talking at the same time.
212
You have loud background music.
213
You have other loud sounds, maybe traffic sounds or sirens.
214
And yeah, it can be chaotic in the real world.
215
So although I think that one -on -one tutoring are great and helpful, why not get some real -world training as well?
216
And so talking with my personal trainer as I'm training has been great.
217
I'm kind of two for one -ing, I suppose.
218
I get a mind workout with the Korean language and I get a body workout with the training as well.
219
And that kind of situation is really, really great because the gym,
220
actually this is something that I don't like about gyms is that they play really loud music.
221
I'm a music snob.
222
Maybe Q -Lips listeners, you guys know that I'm a music snob.
223
So I'm pretty particular about the kind of music I like to listen to.
224
Usually that kind of upbeat pop music that gyms are blaring is okay, but it's not necessarily my style from time to time.
225
I can groove with it, but usually it's not my style.
226
So yeah, that's a bit of a pet peeve of mine, but it's great for the language training aspect of it because
227
that loud music is playing and I have to try and focus on what my personal trainer, my trainer is saying.
228
And so that's good, I think, for building my Korean skills as well.
229
And also there are some real world consequences to not understanding something.
230
Like if my trainer says to move like this or to slow down or go faster,
231
I really have to pay attention and follow his instructions or else, you know, maybe I could injure myself or hurt myself.
232
I'm carrying weight.
233
I'm doing something difficult.
234
And so it's really good for me to focus on what he's saying
235
and important for me to focus on what he's saying.
236
So that is another one of the motivations behind why I decided to sign up for a gym membership.
237
So yeah, a few weeks ago, my wife and I had our first sessions.
238
And like I said, they've been good.
239
We've been doing it now for three weeks, maybe four weeks or so.
240
But there is a funny story that I wanted to share with you.
241
And that's really the purpose of today's episode.
242
So let me get to the funny, embarrassing story.
243
And I guess this was my second session with the personal trainer.
244
He's a great guy.
245
He's maybe a decade younger than me.
246
He's got a lot of experience weightlifting.
247
He has been in body building competitions before.
248
And yeah, just a great trainer so far.
249
I have nothing bad to say about him.
250
However, I told him that right now I'm in the process of training for a marathon.
251
Maybe listeners will know that I love marathoning.
252
I love running and I am doing a big marathon at the start of November.
253
So right now I'm about six weeks away from that.
254
And that is my main focus right now is I don't want to do too much intense weightlifting
255
or anything or work out too hard at the gym because I need to focus on training for the marathon.
256
And I told my trainer after the marathon, then if you want to push me a little bit and give me some more intense workouts,
257
okay, at that time we can do them I'll be down to do them then
258
but before the marathon I kind of just want uh an introduction to the gym
259
how to use the equipment and how to do the movements and the lifts because some of them are quite complicated.
260
You have to have your body in a certain position
261
and your toes pointed a certain way
262
and your knees bent at a certain angle
263
and your hip bent at a certain angle
264
and your breathing needs to be right and your neck
265
and your head and your back and actually it's very confusing some of these poses
266
that you need to hold while doing certain lifts can be quite complicated and quite confusing.
267
But I told the trainer, hey, don't work me out too hard until after the marathon and then we can increase the intensity.
268
But before then, I just want to take it easy and learn how to do some of these movements.
269
So my trainer said, yeah, that's cool.
270
I understand.
271
No problem.
272
You focus on your marathon training and just come in once a week with me
273
and I'll give you an orientation to the gym until after the training is finished for the marathon
274
and then we'll ramp up the intensity. So cool.
275
So I believe it was my second time at the gym and the first session we did legs, leg, like lower body workout.
276
And then the second session was upper body workout.
277
And I have to say that probably like most people actually,
278
I think most humans have stronger legs than stronger arms and stronger upper body.
279
Certainly that is the case for me where I have a lot more power in my lower body
280
and not as much power in my upper body.
281
So as we were practicing doing some of the upper body workout stuff,
282
like some bench press, I was doing the bench press and I was doing some other exercises, an overhead press, I think it's called,
283
where you have a barbell and you have to lift it up over your head.
284
I was doing that one and then the final exercise I was doing that day was a dumbbell fly.
285
A dumbbell is the name of that weight
286
that you just hold in your hand
287
and a fly movement is where you're moving your arm out to the side almost like a bird flaps their wings.
288
It's kind of that motion where maybe that's why they call it a fly
289
because it looks like you're flying and flapping wings as you're doing this exercise.
290
So the final exercise of the day was the dumbbell fly.
291
Now, most of the training session that I was doing that day was in a pretty empty gym.
292
There weren't too many people in the gym at that time.
293
However, as I was getting closer to the end of my session, it started to fill up and there were some people coming in.
294
And so maybe the gym had like 10 or 15 people
295
and it wasn't super busy or anything but there were some other people
296
and there were a couple of younger guys who were also
297
doing some dumbbell exercises right close to where I was doing them
298
and these younger guys I guess maybe they were gym rats
299
a gym rat is somebody who hangs out at the gym
300
and exercises often because they had pretty good bodies they were pretty strong
301
and they knew they looked like they knew what they were
302
doing really well they had heavy heavy dumbbells I don't know how heavy but they were certainly much, much bigger than the dumbbells that I was using.
303
And they were just ripping these flies out.
304
No problem.
305
Whereas the trainer told me, okay, Andrew, since this is your first time, we're going to do just very lightweight.
306
And he gave me one of the lightest dumbbells that they had in the gym, which was a pink dumbbell.
307
And I think it was only two kilograms.
308
Maybe it was even one kilogram it was just like this super small little pink dumbbell and
309
so he said okay Andrew let's do some flies you're going
310
to do 15 of these flies with the pink dumbbells
311
and I thought okay this is going to be no problem like this is a ridiculously small amount of weight
312
and 15 seems like no problem so I did the first set okay
313
and a set means like a group of lifts
314
so I did 15 repetitions and those 15 repetitions
315
that would be one set so we use these expressions in English
316
when talking about weightlifting reps and sets
317
so I was gonna do three sets total and each set had 15 reps so I did the first set, no problem.
318
However, it did feel like as I was getting to 13, 14, 15, started to feel the burn in my arms and in my shoulders a little bit.
319
And then I did the second set.
320
Okay.
321
And then it was time to do the final set.
322
And for the final set, as I hit like number 10, then it really started to burn.
323
And my trainer went behind me and was guiding my arms.
324
So he's helping me to lift just this two kilogram pink dumbbell up.
325
And at the same time, beside me, there are these younger guys who are just ripping the flies with these heavy weights.
326
And yeah, I just felt a little bit embarrassed at that moment.
327
Like, oh my gosh, I have really no strength at all.
328
I felt very humbled, I suppose.
329
I mean, I already went into this experience with a pretty healthy beginner's mindset,
330
I think, whereas like I'm not going to do any ego lifting.
331
Ego lifting, this is another gym idiom, just means lifting weight that's too heavy for you because your ego,
332
your sense of who you are is overly confident
333
and you want to prove yourself even though you really don't have that skill or that ability.
334
You want to show like you're strong but maybe you aren't really strong.
335
We call that ego lifting.
336
So I think I went in with the expectation
337
that I'm okay with just starting at the very very very
338
beginning that's cool I don't need to do any ego lifts I don't need to show off
339
and try and pretend like I'm strong if I don't have
340
that strength but at the same time in
341
that moment having the trainer stand behind me and guide my arms open
342
and help me so that I could complete the lifts
343
when it was only a two kilogram pink dumbbell
344
while being juxtaposed juxtaposed means put side by side side by
345
side with these other guys who are doing this exercise with
346
much heavier weight with no problems at all it felt a little bit embarrassing a little bit humbled
347
but at the end of the day it was no big
348
deal I mean it's not like those guys who are really
349
good at weightlifting it's not like they were laughing at me
350
or anything they just minded their own business they didn't even look at me i think
351
so it's all in my head all in my mind
352
but i think it's good everybody's a beginner at some point right
353
and so the main thing for me now is just to keep going not quit
354
and but i feel like it's been pretty good so far
355
and good for my body good for my mind good for my korean
356
and i'm gonna keep it up i'm gonna do it
357
so that's my story guys i wanted to tell you today was about finding a gym
358
and working out with a personal trainer and that embarrassing experience with the pink dumbbells.
359
To end this episode today, I want to tell you that the Q -Lips hotline is open again.
360
Actually, a few weeks ago, in I think it was bonus episode 179,
361
I asked for listeners to leave me a voice message and to tell me a story about a terrible, stressful morning that you had.
362
And Q -Lips listeners from around the world, you responded.
363
I got lots of responses and I'm going to share those responses with you in the next episode from next week.
364
So you can look forward to hearing your stories in our next bonus episode
365
but I also want to open the hotline again by the
366
way I'm going to nickname it the Q -Lips hotline for now
367
if you have a better name suggestion for me let me know I'm not 100 % sure
368
if Q -Lips hotline is a good name or not
369
but it's all I could think of for now
370
but with our new app it's really easy guys I'm going
371
to put a link in the description for this episode
372
and you'll just click that link
373
and on your phone I suggest using your phone it's easier to do this on your phone than your computer
374
so phone or tablet but just click that link on your phone
375
or tablet and it's going to open right to an audio recorder just hit record
376
and you'll have two minutes to share an audio story
377
and after you share your story then it will automatically be sent to me
378
and I'll have the audio file well before
379
that happens you'll have a chance to review it so
380
if you want to check and see you know sometimes maybe you didn't like the way
381
that you said something that can happen, right?
382
So if you want to rerecord, that's okay.
383
And then once you're okay, you're satisfied, just hit send and it will automatically send me the file and you're finished.
384
You don't have to do anything at all other than that.
385
So it couldn't be easier to send me your audio story.
386
And I hope again, I'll get some great participation from Q -Lips listeners from around the world.
387
But what I want to know for this week's request for
388
the Q -Lips hotline is why don't you share a story
389
with us about a time where you had an awkward
390
or a funny or an embarrassing experience because you were a beginner or because you were trying something new.
391
I told you this week about my story about lifting pink weights at the gym.
392
That was my embarrassing story, but I want to hear from you as well.
393
So follow the link in the description for this episode, and you could submit your story.
394
After a few weeks, I'll collect all of them, and we'll listen to them together in an upcoming bonus episode.
395
And definitely, I'm excited to hear what you have to say.
396
So don't be shy.
397
be active with your English.
398
This is a great chance to be active with your English
399
and to be confident with your English and to build your skills.
400
Of course, listening is part of the equation.
401
We need to do lots of English listening as we're building our English fluency.
402
And certainly you've done that here today, spending time with me.
403
But in addition to that, we do need to speak and practice speaking as well.
404
And so here's your chance to do that.
405
So I'm eagerly waiting for your story.
406
Okay, guys, I think that's going to bring me to the end for this week.
407
Thank you for listening all the way to the end.
408
Amazing job.
409
Please take care and I'll catch you in the next Qloops episode.
410
Until then, bye -bye.

Về Bài Học Này

Bạn đang luyện tập phát âm tiếng Anh với video "My Embarrassing First Week at the Gym | English Listening Practice | Bonus 182" bằng phương pháp Shadowing — kỹ thuật được Dr. Alexander Arguelles phổ biến rộng rãi.
