1
One of the biggest lies language learners believe is that they have to spend hours a day studying a language.
2
I am a native English speaker, but I have also learned German, Portuguese, and Polish.
3
And after learning three languages, let me tell you, the trick is not piling up hours and hours of daily study.
4
I can tell you from experience that massive, overwhelming study sessions actually lead to burnout, not fluency.
5
The goal in learning a language is becoming fluent.
6
And so if that is what you are aiming for, you need to cut out these ginormous study sessions.
7
They are not helping you.
8
What actually makes a difference in your language learning journey are micro habits.
9
Tiny, low friction routines that you can do every day without thinking about it.
10
Now today I'm going to share with you five micro habits
11
that I use to learn three foreign languages
12
that you can easily add to your routine to learn a language quickly and build real confidence.
13
Let's get started.
14
Micro habit number one is the one minute daily journal.
15
I am a huge believer in the daily journal.
16
This is something that I did not do the first time I learned a foreign language
17
and I slowly built this habit as I became a more seasoned language learning.
18
I can tell you from experience that the difference between not doing this language journal and doing it was huge.
19
All you do is write two sentences in a dedicated notebook or journal in the language you're learning every day.
20
Two sentences, not an essay.
21
And the idea is to build a small habit of actually producing the language, creating output, and initiating everything
22
that it takes for your mind to actually be thinking in the language and just spit it out on paper.
23
Oftentimes we tell ourselves, well I need to get better at the language before I can actually write
24
or before I can speak and actually it's not true.
25
Fluency is all about communication.
26
It's not about being perfect in every sense of the language before you can communicate.
27
It's about learning to communicate and then communicating better.
28
You build your vocabulary.
29
You build your grammar.
30
You build your sentence building.
31
You build your pronunciation.
32
You build your listening skills and you slowly communicate better.
33
But in order to communicate, you have to produce output.
34
You cannot just live off of input, input, input.
35
And so starting this two-minute journal really helps you initiate that process.
36
All you're doing are two sentences.
37
That's it.
38
Keep it super simple.
39
Today I felt stressed about this or I have this event coming up tomorrow.
40
I'm feeling really excited about it.
41
Super simple stuff.
42
Real feelings, real thoughts, real emotions.
43
The other part of this is that that's going to build your familiarity with real words,
44
real phrases, real things that you think about and encounter in everyday life.
45
Oftentimes Sometimes we are just bombarded with textbook language.
46
The materials that you are using to learn a language are helpful, but they're not your real life.
47
They have nothing to do with your real thoughts and emotions and the things that you are doing.
48
And so by doing this two sentence journal, you're going to start building that vocabulary and familiarize yourself with words
49
and phrases that you need just to talk about your normal life.
50
Now the secret here is not perfection.
51
It's all about consistency.
52
Just doing a little bit every day is far more important than spending hours some days studying.
53
Pro habit number two is creating a real-world speaking loop.
54
Now, self-study is important, but in order to speak naturally, you need regular conversations and feedback from a real human being.
55
You cannot reach fluency in a complete vacuum.
56
That is exactly why the cornerstone for my language learning journey is Italki.
57
If you're not familiar, Italki is an online platform
58
that connects you with native-speaking teachers for personalized one-on-one lessons tailored specifically to your goals, interests, and skill level.
59
Think of it as the ultimate micro habit for active output.
60
Instead of just waiting to feel ready to speak,
61
booking a short, focused 30-minute session once or twice a week creates a direct path to fluency.
62
You get immediate real-time corrections in a safe environment, which short-circuits the hesitation habit and starts to truly build real confidence.
63
faster than any solo app ever could.
64
What I love most is the sheer flexibility.
65
With over 150 languages offered and more than 30,000 teachers worldwide,
66
you can use the filters to find the perfect mentor that fits your learning style, budget, and schedule.
67
Whether you want deep conversation practice or targeted grammar help.
68
And if you're a complete beginner, you can find a teacher that also speaks your native language.
69
so you feel completely comfortable from day one and that's all and Catherine,
70
do you often go to a trip? yes, I like to go to a trip that's a good hobby,
71
I can always go to a book or talk to friends and that is really a good pause.
72
and act fast because the offer is only available for the first 50 users.
73
Microhabit number three is the input shift.
74
Most people listen to language content passively in the background all the time, but microhabits require actual focus.
75
It's not going to be enough just to have the language floating by your ears 24-7.
76
The whole idea behind a microhabit is to do something very short and simple,
77
but be laser focused on it so it is extremely effective.
78
So the idea here is
79
that you set a timer for five minutes a day during your commute
80
or coffee break or just any short period of time that you have consistently.
81
Then you're going to pick one short audio clip, podcast, music, whatever it is,
82
something where you're intaking the language obviously and you're going to listen to it twice.
83
The first time you're going to listen to it to gain a general idea of what it's talking about, the general meaning of the clip.
84
So listen to it quickly, you understand what it says and then you're going to listen to it a second time
85
and this time you are going to pick out three new words or phrases and then you're going to write them down.
86
It's going to teach you to listen much more closely.
87
You're going to really be paying more attention to the words
88
and different forms of the words and writing them down is going to make your brain remember those.
89
Over time you are going to teach your brain that
90
when you are listening you are focused and you're paying attention to every single word,
91
every single ending and you're going to build the listening skill much better than
92
if you were just passively listening to input all the time.
93
I did not do this the first time that I learned a language
94
and I felt like I was good at listening pretty early on
95
and then as I got better speaking the language I was like oh I didn't even notice
96
that and I've actually been saying this wrong for two years
97
and then as I became a more seasoned language learner
98
and I started learning my second
99
and third foreign language I started paying more attention to this
100
and training active listening and when I made
101
that shift my listening skills became so much better and so much faster it didn't take years of passive input,
102
it was so much quicker and so much more direct.
103
And that also transferred to my speaking skills.
104
My speaking increased so much faster.
105
And earlier on, I was able to communicate more fluently.
106
So these really little shifts actually end up making a huge effect in your language learning journey.
107
And the sooner you make that shift, the better.
108
Microhabit number four is adding in two minutes of daily shadowing.
109
Speaking a foreign language is a physical habit.
110
You are training your mouth, your jaw, your throat, your tongue.
111
You are training everything to speak differently.
112
And this takes time.
113
It takes adjusting.
114
And most of all, it takes training.
115
One way that you can train your pronunciation skills is by shadowing.
116
Take a clip of a native speaker speaking the language.
117
Whether it's via podcast, a YouTube video, just a random clip of someone talking, whatever it is, listen to it,
118
pause after every sentence and repeat it out loud.
119
When you are repeating it out loud, you are focused on the pronunciation most of all,
120
but you are also focused on copying their rhythm, stress, and intonation exactly.
121
You are trying to replicate their speech as exact as you can.
122
Doing this for two minutes a day is going to bridge that gap from listening to a language, understanding the language, to actually having the skills to produce the language.
123
If you cannot pronounce the words in the language, you cannot speak it.
124
And even if you think you can speak it, people can't understand you.
125
It is essential.
126
And I've always found that when you're in this phase of learning the language, but you just don't have the right pronunciation skills yet,
127
you feel the gap between you and the language and it makes it so much harder to learn new words, to understand people, to speak correctly.
128
And once you bridge that short gap of pronunciation, the language suddenly feels more accessible.
129
You feel like you can understand, you have the confidence to speak, you have the confidence to communicate,
130
and that gap is easily fixable.
131
All you need to start with is two minutes of shadowing a day.
132
And our last micro habit, micro habit number five is the catch and correct audit.
133
Whenever your italki teacher corrects you or you stumble over a word, write it down in a dedicated notebook.
134
In this notebook, you are going to keep track of errors you make, words you forget, little things you are working on in the language.
135
And simply taking a second to actually write down the mistake, why was it wrong why did I make this mistake
136
when you take the second to do that it sticks in your brain
137
so much better have you had
138
that experience where you're like oh how do you say light
139
and then you look it up and you're like oh yeah that's it
140
and then you turn off your phone
141
and one second later you forgot it it's gone like you
142
try to say the same word later in the day
143
and you literally don't remember it just disappeared sometimes we look it up
144
so passively or we hear the correction
145
so passively it doesn't even register in our brains especially
146
when you're getting real-time corrections from a native speaker
147
that they're written down that you acknowledge them and you register those mistakes
148
so that you can actually improve
149
and you don't make them again then I usually like to
150
spend even just one minute the next day reviewing mistakes I made the previous day
151
and you are good to go your language skills are going to be better that day you will be surprised
152
by how much you can improve by simply having a dedicated notebook for corrections
153
and words that you looked up and want to remember.
154
Those are all of the micro habits that I personally use
155
when learning a foreign language and I hope
156
that they help you bridge your gap from learning to fluency a little bit quicker.
157
And remember consistency beats intensity every single time.
158
You do not need dedicated hours of study every single day.
159
You just need some tiny micro habits to fill in the gaps and you will be fluent in no time.
160
If you're ready to start your daily speaking habit,

推薦影片

為什麼這個影片是絕佳的口語練習素材?

這個影片不僅分享了實用的語言學習技巧,其口語表達更是自然流暢、貼近生活。演講者用簡潔的短句和口語化的用詞傳遞觀點,非常適合用來練習“英語影子跟讀”。比如她提到“massive, overwhelming study sessions actually lead to burnout”,這種真實的表達比教科書更生動,能幫助學習者掌握日常交流中的自然語氣。

拆解3句自然表達,學地道英語

  • “the trick is not piling up hours and hours of daily study”:“trick”在這裡指“竅門”,“piling up”形象地表達“堆積”,避免了生硬的“spend a lot of time”。影子跟讀時注意“hours and hours”的連讀,感受口語中的重複強調。
  • “Tiny, low friction routines that you can do every day without thinking about it”:“low friction”原指“低摩擦”,此處引申為“輕鬆無壓力”,這種隱喻用法在口語中很常見。練習時模仿其輕快的節奏,體會“without thinking about it”的自然弱化。
  • “Fluency is all about communication”:“all about”簡潔有力,直接點明核心。
