12
how I actually am able to achieve that every day.
我究竟是如何每天都能做到這一點的。
13
So let me break it down first.
那我先給大家拆解一下。
14
There are three phases.
共有三個階段。
15
Phase one is just when you're starting.
第一階段就是你剛剛起步的時候。
16
I mean, you're literally starting at zero.
我的意思是,你完全是從零開始的。
17
So how do you get just something?
那你要怎麼才能得到一點點呢?
18
So it's that beginner stage.
所以這就是那個入門階段。
19
The second stage is all about building.
第二階段完全聚焦於構建工作。
20
You have just enough of the basics.
你掌握的基礎知識剛好夠用。
21
Now you need all the real stuff.
現在你需要的都是真東西了。
22
Grammar, vocabulary, input, output.
語法、詞彙、輸入、輸出。
23
I mean, all the real stuff that actually builds a language.
我的意思是,所有那些真正構成一門語言的核心要素。
24
That is what we start To be honest, phase three is endless.
這就是我們的起點。說實話,第三階段是無止境的。
25
So once you get to that point, You just have to continue for as long as you want to speak that language.
所以一旦你達到了那個階段,只要你想繼續使用那門語言,就可以一直堅持下去。
26
It's all about integrating it into your life.
關鍵是要把它融入你的生活。
27
living, and creating immersion for yourself.
生活,併為自己營造沉浸式體驗。
28
Even if you're not in the place, you have to create immersion.
即使你不在現場,也必須營造出沉浸感。
29
Let's dive into phase one.
我們來深入探討第一階段。
30
This stage really has to do with vocabulary and pronunciation.
這個階段確實和詞彙以及發音有關。
31
And I like to think of this part of the process like how kids learn languages.
我喜歡把這個過程的這一部分類比成孩子學習語言的方式。
32
Now, if you think about kids when they're starting to learn to speak, it's not like their parents or teachers are sitting them down at the table every day.
現在,想想孩子們剛開始學說話的時候,他們的父母或老師並不會每天都讓他們坐在桌子前刻意教學。
33
Not at all.
不客氣。
34
That is not how kids learn.
孩子們不是這樣學習的。
35
And it's not how we should be beginning the process of learning a language.
而且這也不是我們開始學習一門語言時應有的方式。
36
Now, of course, grammar is important.
當然,語法很重要。
37
Structure is important.
結構很重要。
38
You have to practice this.
你得練習這個。
39
But that's not the start of the language learning journey.
但這並不是語言學習之旅的起點。
40
And the way that kids learn languages is they hear vocabulary and they practice the same words.
孩子們學習語言的方式是先聽到詞彙,然後反覆練習這些單詞。
41
Their first words are super simple.
他們說的第一句話都非常簡單。
42
It's the words they need the most.
這正是他們最需要的話。
43
The most common words.
最常用的單詞。
44
So we're gonna start there.
那我們就從這裡開始。
45
And what I always like to do is I start with the top 1000 most common words in that language.
我一直喜歡做的一件事就是從該語言最常用的1000個單詞開始。
46
This is super easy to find if you just search the language Spanish, top 1000 words.
只要搜尋“西班牙語 前1000個常用詞”,很容易就能找到這個。
47
there will be a list and you just print out a document of that list and you have it.
會有一份清單,你只需把這份清單列印成檔案,就可以拿到了。
48
That's all you need to do.
這就是你需要做的全部事情。
49
Or you can ask AI, say make me a list of the top 1000 most common words of this language and it will give it to you.
或者你可以問人工智慧,比如讓它給你列出這門語言最常用的1000個單詞,它就會給你生成這樣的列表。
50
So you need this list and I like to have it printed and I keep track.
所以你需要這份清單,我喜歡把它打印出來,方便我隨時核對。
51
And at this point, I choose a number of how many I'm going to learn a day now.
52
when I first started learning languages I was doing I think 20 words a day.
53
And as I became a more experienced, more advanced language learner, I started to do a hundred words a day.
54
But obviously you don't start there.
55
That's like the advanced mode.
56
So you can pick.
57
I just recommend doing more than 10 a day.
58
So just something more than 10.
59
But even 20, 15, that's fine.
60
Do that, okay?
61
And for this phase, I like to use flashcards.
62
I use them all the time actually, so they're great.
63
But in this phase, I like physical real flashcards.
64
Because there's something important about studying using your senses to experience the language.
65
Just like I was talking about kids before, kids experience language.
66
They don't just take it in like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
67
You know, it's part of their life.
68
And you want to try your best to create this.
69
Even if you have to manufacture this environment, it's really important that you are really experiencing the words,
70
where you are really using your senses and feeling them.
71
And it will help you learn it so much faster, I promise.
72
Especially for this beginner phase, there's something really good about connecting the word to a physical item.
73
So you have your flashcards, okay?
74
Now you're studying your words every day.
75
Perfect.
76
The other thing that you need to do early on in the process is focus on pronunciation.
77
A lot of people wait to focus on pronunciation and this is a huge mistake.
78
Pronunciation is actually essential to building your foundation for a language.
79
Without it, it makes the language just feel blurry in your mind.
80
The times where I have lacked in focusing on pronunciation, the language learning journey has been so much harder.
81
And the problem is it doesn't get better.
82
You need to focus on it early on because When you continue making the same mistakes in your speech,
83
they start to form habits and you think that that's actually how a word sounds.
84
So it is an essential focus.
85
If you are learning English, I actually have a seven day pronunciation workout, which is designed to help learners at any level.
86
So if you haven't taken the time to really fine tune and focus on your pronunciation,
87
I totally recommend doing that just to even that out so that your actual mouth muscles
88
are at the same level as where you are in your brain.
89
We want to be at the same level.
90
You have the pronunciation skills to keep up with the vocabulary and knowledge that you have.
91
But just to recap here, phase one, this beginning phase is all about learning words, and focusing on pronunciation.
92
One way
93
that I love to focus on pronunciation early on too is
94
every time I am going through my new flashcards for the day, however many I have, I look up every single word on Google Translate just to press
95
that play button on there because then you can hear it said.
96
And I sometimes play it five, ten times just to get a real, real feel how that word sounds.
97
And then I practice.
98
So I know it's a little time consuming.
99
You can't just sprint through the cards, but the goal here is about actually learning the language,
100
not getting something done as fast as you can in the day.
101
So that is phase one.
102
Let's move to phase two.
103
Like I said before, phase two is about building the structures
104
and the foundation that you need now to really grow in that language.
105
So you already have the very basics.
106
You have the top 1000 words and you have the pronunciation skills that you need.
107
Now we're going to introduce grammar, sentence structure, all the fun stuff.
108
For this phase, you need three things.
109
You need a workbook and you need a notebook and you need a vocab notebook.
110
Now, let me explain the differences here.
111
For the workbook, this is actually going to be your course.
112
This is where you're going to get your daily lesson.
113
And this is absolutely essential.
114
Now, I always find my course book by looking up In the place where they speak that language,
115
you look up their language courses and you see which course book they teach that foreign language in.
116
Now, I don't know if that makes sense.
117
So if you are learning Spain Spanish, you would look up language schools in Spain.
118
And you do a little research here to see
119
which workbook they use at these language schools then you're gonna buy that workbook.
120
It's usually about 20 to 30 USD.
121
Now I know it's a lot, but compared to courses and all kinds of other things, it's not very much.
122
So you need to buy that workbook.
123
And that is what you will use every day.
124
I typically like to do one chapter a day.
125
And these typically have about 30 chapters in them.
126
So it actually is quite reasonable.
127
So you start with that A1 course book and just start working your way through it.
128
Now, every day when I'm doing that lesson, I have two notebooks.
129
The first notebook is for taking notes, jotting down.
130
It's ugly, it's messy, it's for practicing the grammar chart, it's for writing out sentences, it's for organizing my thoughts.
131
It's just a messy, messy notebook that actually puts the information from my course book into my brain.
132
Then the second book I have is a vocabulary book and this book is precious.
133
Now, I like to have a small one
134
because I like to keep it in my purse and every single time I run into a new word, it goes in there.
135
Now, these vocabulary books, I have so many for every language I've learned and I still refer to them all the time.
136
Like they are some of my most important items.
137
Like if there was a fire in my house and I had a few minutes just to grab everything, I would get these books.
138
I'm not kidding.
139
They're so important.
140
And what I do here is on one side I put the language I'm learning
141
and then on the next side I put my native translation.
142
So for me that's English and I always keep the sides right, okay?
143
So every time I see a new word, I write it down in there.
144
And it really helps solidify it.
145
I mean, you see it in your workbook, you're like, hmm, I don't know that word, and put it in my notebook, and it just takes a second.
146
You're not even memorizing it right then but it really helps that word stick with you.
147
And then a couple days later when you think to yourself, I think I've seen that word before.
148
Instead of looking up the word again, you just flip back the pages and you see it and that act just
149
really helps the word solidify and stick with you.
150
It's kind of that same feeling like
151
when you're reading a paper copy of a book and you remember a part of the book, you literally imagine the page is on.
152
You know what I mean? That feeling?
153
Well, you have that feeling with your vocabulary too.
154
And so it just helps you remember it so much more.
155
Then once a week, I personally choose Sundays, but once a week I do a review of that.
156
vocab book, just looking back throughout the week, all the words I encountered.
157
And it doesn't take you very long.
158
You just kind of read through it, but it really helps you remember those words.
159
I also like to hold a paper to the book and so you cover up
160
one side of the words and just run it down
161
and see which words you can remember even just from that one previous encounter.
162
and which words you can't.
163
And usually doing this too, I like to highlight the words I didn't remember, and so then the next time I kind of know and I focus on them just a little bit more.
164
So that is everything that you need for phase two.
165
You just need those books.
166
And essentially it comes down to doing one chapter of your workbook a day.
167
taking notes on your notebook and then writing your vocabulary in your vocab book That's essentially what it boils down to.
168
But at this point, you also need to change your mindset.
169
You are no longer an initial beginner.
170
And here you need to start focusing on creative ways to have input.
171
So, You know, you need to integrate the language into your life.
172
That means listening to music, listening to podcasts, I like audiobooks of fairy tales and kids stories.
173
You can usually find those pretty easily on Spotify or Audible, watching TV shows and movies.
174
And Ideally here, you understand 80 % of the content you are taking in.
175
That is the golden rule for taking in content, so you really need to aim for that 80%.
176
So you need to aim to find things that are your level.
177
Like I said, kids stories are really helpful for just easy, accessible input.
178
but there's tons of content these days.
179
You can find any kind of anything you're interested in.
180
If you're interested in video games, Watch video game YouTube videos in that language.
181
Like literally anything, turn your phone into that language.
182
I mean, just get creative and really start upping the input So you need to shift your mindset a little bit, but that's not the main focus here.
183
The main focus is really building the grammar and sentence structure,
184
foundation, adding in vocabulary, But remember to mix that with some more input and a little bit more output if you can.
185
All right, let's move to phase three.
186
And phase three is all about...
187
high input, high output, and immersion.
188
At this point, if you haven't gotten to your C1 workbook, you're still moving through those.
189
But that now is just, you don't even have to think about it.
190
It's just a part of your life.
191
You just do it and you don't even think about it.
192
Now you're getting to the level of really really prioritizing all the input that you can.
193
So if you're driving your car, you have something playing in that language.
194
If you are walking somewhere, You're listening to something in that language.
195
If you are going on a run, you are thinking in that language.
196
If you're taking a shower, you're thinking in that language.
197
So, You need to create an immersive experience for yourself.
198
Haven't you heard people say, "Oh, the only way to learn a language is by moving there and you learn by immersion"?
199
Everyone says that.
200
And it's not true.
201
I can tell you, I have lived in many different foreign countries, and some of the foreign countries I live in, I speak the language.
202
I live in Poland right now, and I speak the language.
203
But, I've also lived in countries where I literally did not learn a single word.
204
and that is totally possible.
205
I mean we have Google Translate, you can literally use ChatGPT as a translator now if you didn't know that, Like...
206
It is fine.
207
You can get by just fine.
208
not knowing a single word.
209
So that is not true.
210
But what people mean when they're saying this is that immersion is essential to language learning.
211
And that is true.
212
But the thing is that you can create immersion for yourself.
213
It's actually one of the coolest things.
214
You can literally say, I'm going to begin living in this language.
215
And when you shift your mindset to that, you will become fluent.
216
If you don't, fluency is going to take you a lot longer.
217
And maybe you actually will have to go move to that place.
218
But if you can just flip that switch and say, "Okay, now I think in the language.
219
Now I drive listening to the language.
220
Now I grocery shop in this language.
221
Now every time I'm working out, I'm thinking in that language, right?
222
Just any way that you can integrate it into your life, now is the time that you need to do it.
223
Input is important, but you also need to find opportunities for output.
224
And this gets a little bit harder because if you don't have friends to speak with, you don't know people that speak that language, It gets hard.
225
But one thing is you can talk to yourself out loud all day long.
226
I've done that so much.
227
It's embarrassing.
228
I know.
229
Luckily now I have a baby.
230
So I just talked to my baby in different languages and it seems a little less weird than just talking to myself.
231
But Yes, you just need to talk.
232
Just get it out.
233
And so if you have friends, that's amazing.
234
Speak to them.
235
Use that.
236
Build that friendship in that language.
237
Or you can use the ChatGPT app and literally put it in that language.
238
And then there's like a speaking button.
239
And I've actually seen in the comments of the videos
240
that some of you guys say that you do this and I love it.
241
You just hit speak and you start talking to ChatGPT and it will literally answer you.
242
So definitely try it out.
243
creative here, you need to find ways to actually start talking and build that confidence.
244
And that confidence is going to grow the more that you are able to talk, the more that you are able to create output.
245
So try to do it as much as you can.
246
Okay.
247
So that is our phase three and let's just sum up all of our phases really quickly.
248
before we jump into my actual daily routine and how I manage this.
249
Phase one is the initial language learning phase and here you focus on vocabulary and pronunciation.
250
Phase two is where you start building all the structures.
251
And here you're focusing still on vocabulary, but you're using your workbook to learn grammar and sentence structure, and you're starting to introduce input.
252
And then phase three is about creating immersion for yourself.
253
So high, high, high input, and also creating output, speaking as much as you can.
254
So for my daily routine, the first thing is that it's important to find one
255
little piece in the day about an hour
256
that you can study every day and this Consistency will help you
257
so much just to have it built into your schedule just
258
you know from this hour to this hour I study this language
259
and it's a non -negotiable and nothing is ever scheduled during this time and Right?
260
So for me, the easiest way to do that is by doing it early in the morning.
261
And I know it's a commitment.
262
Nobody likes to wake up early in the morning just to sit down and study.
263
But there are a few reasons why the morning is amazing.
264
I mean, if you're not a morning person, don't do it in the morning.
265
But for me, I like being able to study language with a coffee,
266
with a candle, and like make it this cozy fun experience.
267
And also in the morning usually my brain is really sharp for this kind of stuff.
268
And as the day goes on I'm tired and I'm exhausted
269
and the last thing I want to do is sit down and study a language.
270
Also, languages are one of the highest priorities in my day, so I like to start the day with getting that done, checking it off, and then for the rest of the day,
271
I already feel accomplished and I have this momentum to continue the day.
272
So for me, early mornings are the best option, but find what's best for you.
273
Take that same mindset of, What is going to be the time that I can carve out every day?
274
When am I going to enjoy language learning?
275
When am I going to be able to make it a fun experience?
276
When is my brain going to be awake?
277
So take that into consideration and find the best time for you and schedule that in.
278
So every day it's the same.
279
So then when I sit down to study the language, the first thing I do is I review yesterday's vocabulary in my vocabulary book.
280
and yesterday's work in the workbook.
281
So I just do a quick review.
282
And this should only take you about 10 minutes.
283
If that, it's important because it just wakes up your brain, reminds you really quickly what you've been up to.
284
And then if you had learned kind of complicated, difficult grammar things the day before, it's fresh in your mind to continue building on that today.
285
So I start with that.
286
Then I start the next chapter in my workbook with my vocab book right next to it.
287
And this actually shouldn't take you that long.
288
It should take you between 30 minutes and an hour max.
289
But it should not take you an hour.
290
You know, so as you're studying in your workbook, you're writing down every new word in your vocab book, and that's what you're doing.
291
You're also using your other notebook to take notes, jot things down, whatever you need.
292
And then after I've done that, I move to practicing pronunciation.
293
And I usually do this for about 10 minutes.
294
Now this I get creative with.
295
If I have a pronunciation workout or exercise that I'm currently focusing on, I'll do that for my 10 minutes, practice using the mouth muscles, you know, all the things that are important here.
296
But if I don't have something like that, then I'll just practice reading my workbook out loud, whatever I can do just to practice the mouth muscles. But...
297
In every language, there are sounds that are particularly difficult in that language.
298
And for example, in English, the th, the th, the sound is really hard for people.
299
And so language learners actually really need to focus specifically just on that th.
300
saying this, that, these, those, that kind of thing.
301
And that's more of like a workout or tongue twister.
302
So just find something that you can use.
303
every day and do about 10 minutes of pronunciation here.
304
Now this all together should only take you about an hour
305
if you're on the longer side of things It will take you about an hour and 20 minutes Yes, every day.
306
Then you are going to be able to learn this language really effectively.
307
I can promise you that.
308
And then for the rest of the day, all you're doing is focusing on ways that you could bring immersion into your life.
309
So be creative about it.
310
Just when you're already doing something, do it in that language.
311
And by doing these two things together, a little bit of study time, and immersion you will be successful learning the language.
312
And after learning three languages, I have really found that that is the very best method.
313
You really combine everything that your brain needs to be able to learn it.
314
and you're able to learn it very quickly.
315
So thank you so much for watching this video.
316
I really hope that this helped you.
317
If you want to check out that pronunciation workout I mentioned, it's linked right below.
318
and I'm going to catch you in the next video.
319
Thanks for watching.
320
Bye!
321
