2
it easier to build wearables tiny robots and cool iot projects computer turn off my robot but with hundreds of Arduino compatible boards already out there why design a new one
3

4
want to simplify as many of these connections as possible to build a more compact brain for our tiny robot my only condition is that has to be small as possible packing as many features as
5
it can this really depends on our microcontroller first I was going to use this tiny BLE module it's one of the smallest modules out there but it's not that popular in the maker Community the esp32 on
6

7
xiao so something this size is feasible but the only thing that I don't like about this is that it has an external antenna this is not going anywhere but I prefer to have the antenna as solid state
8
directly integrated inside the PCB there are various families and series available but I decided to go with the C3 which has an on-board antenna that is FCC certified having an
9
non-chip antenna would probably make our board a bit smaller but it would be too expensive to certify as a development board so this tiny module seemed like the best option this supports both BL
10
and WiFi and works with the Arduino framework it can also be programmed directly through the USB data lines without need of extra chips some modules also include a switch to get the esp into
11
boot mode in case it freezes but honestly that rarely happens so to save space we're not going to add the switch in case that happens you can always reset the power or make a physical short
12
between ground and the boot pin the gpios took a bit of space but it was important to use standard pitch connectors this makes the board compatible with other sensors modules and headers keeping
13
everything maker friendly the castellated pins also allow for easier soldering if needed as you can see the SP takes most of the area so we have to place the USBC on the bottom side this leaves
14
us with a little bit of space left just enough to add a tiny 3.3 volt voltage regulator an LED and a battery charger one PCBway box later we got our board it was very satisfying to look at how small
15
this was but I was still a bit disappointed that I couldn't fit any sensors on this first prototype soldering this tiny double-sided board was quite a challenge but shortly after assembly I
16
realized that there was a major issue with the design the power through the esp32 had to be supplied through the 3.3 volts regulator which had to be supplied through the battery which had
17
to be charged through the charging chip which had to be powered through the USB cable but without the battery the charger could only Supply a few milliamps so I couldn't just power it through
18
a USBC alone this meant that the challenge had become even greater apart from the sensors I had to fit a new bigger chip with a pass through USB battery charger allowing the board to be powered
19
through either a battery a USB cable or both while we're here we should also probably fix the fact that the battery has to be soldered onto the board this can either rip off the pads or risk
20
accidental shorting I spent days on Alum designer exploring all its tools to figure out how to make this happen and it took weeks of refinement and multiple iterations to get it right being small
21
is was going to set this board apart from the rest so every millimeter and every track really counted this took a long time to design because every change had to fully sinking but having Alum
22
365 in my pocket meant that I could brainstorm on the project from anywhere I go click the link in the video's description to try out this handy tool
23
the codecell lives on an 18.5 by 18.5 mm PCB the first tradeoff that I had to make was pushing the antenna out of the board's Edge this is a very common thing and the is completely safe but it added an extra 5 mm on one of the sides
24
freeing up some more space on the bottom side of the PCB the second tradeoff was moving the USBC underneath the ESP this was a huge win because it added five extra pins but before I start getting
25
hate comments from RF Engineers just hear me out in the RF word any signals close to the antenna can lower its efficiency and range the USBC is in a safe region but when the cable is connected it's
26
kind of a different story but when testing this with different USBC cables the attenuation was barely noticeable this probably because most USBC cables are shielded so overall this was the best
27
option when prioritizing space I don't think it's that big of an issue because most probably the USBC cable will mostly be used for charging and the application will shut down during charging a
28
small downside to this approach is that the board had to be slightly thicker to make space for the Cable but with this new design change I managed to fit an addressable led a 3.3 Voltage regulator
29
the new charging chip a battery connector and 2 100 microfarad bulk capacitors these were the largest capacitors I could fit in this space and from testing they were enough to supply DC motors PCB motors
30
actuators and the 945 LEDs mounted on my spherical display on the bottom side we have the ESP 32 C3 a light sensor and a motion sensor to simplify how these devices are configured and
31
talked to each other we developed an easy to use Arduino Library which can get you started with a few lines of code this is supported by multiple examples and tutorials on our website the onboard

infrared light sensor lets you play around with depth gestures Auto dimming and proximity detection there is also an optional motion sensor this has an advanced inertial measurement unit
33
which is kind of a pricey upgrade the development boards from adafruit alone cost around $25 but I think it's well worth the investment on putting this on the code cell because it integrates a
34
3-axis accelerometer gyroscope and magnetometer internally it also combines the data from these three sensors using a Sensor Fusion algorithm to read tap detection, step counting, activity
35
guessing, angular rotations and much more now the cool thing about codecell is that you can combine all the data from these sensors with popular esp32 applications so you can easily create

a wireless remote prompt jokes with AI and even connect it with Alexa computer turn off my LED computer turn on my LED
37
computer please turn on my robot computer turn off my robot
38
I'm super proud with how this project turned out and I'm personally using it to build smaller and smaller robots we're planning to turn some of these into kits using Codecell
39
as the main platform I'll be showing more of these robots in the coming weeks but for now I just want to see what you create with it if you'd like to start building with codecell head on to microbots.io and it should arrive in a few days you can either buy it with
