1
Ladies and gentlemen, in this video, I interviewed Magnus Carlsen, the number one rated chess player in the world for more than a decade,
2
the multiple -time classical, rapid, and blitz world champion, and a player considered by many as the greatest of all time.
3
We were in Toronto for the Champions Chess Tour finale, which, surprise, surprise, Magnus also happened to win.
4
And I know Magnus has been interviewed hundreds of times over the course of his career, so this was a special moment for me,
5
not just because I actually met him for the first time,
6
but because I wanted to provide an interview for him and ultimately for you the viewer, that would be an interesting listen,
7
an interesting watch, and I believe that I have accomplished
8
that goal with a mix of short and fun questions for him to answer, but also some longer and thought -provoking ones as well.
9
Also at the end, we played a segment that actually my wife
10
Lucy thought of, which is titled chess player or Ikea furniture.
11
With that said, here's the interview.
12
Hi, I'm Gotham Chess and I'm here with...
13
Um, uh, sorry.
14
Can we start again?
15
Hi, I'm Gotham Chess, and I'm here with...
16
Magnus, who is famous from Levi's YouTube videos.
17
How many beers would it take for you to drink for me to beat you in a classical chess game?
18
That's a very difficult question, because I'd probably sober up during the game, so I'd probably have to keep drinking.
19
Probably start with 20 and take it from there.
20
20, okay.
21
What's the size of the cup?
22
Um, pints.
23
Wow, okay.
24
Do you have a dream sponsor?
25
My Puma deal is expiring, so I'm open for new ones in that sector.
26
But I was recently at the Jordan Golf Club, so if Jordan want to come and sponsor me, I'd consider it.
27
Every other chess player has said any sponsor because we don't get sponsorships.
28
I'm sorry for my...
29
You destroyed two decades of chess players, Vegas.
30
Yeah, sorry about that.
31
If you could be number one in the world, or if you could be number...
32
Basically if you could be the greatest of all time at anything else, what would it be?
33
Soccer for sure.
34
Soccer?
35
Yeah, that's an easy one.
36
Name your price if you have to chess box.
37
Ten million dollars.
38
Okay.
39
What's your drink of choice?
40
Water.
41
Past 10 p .m also water?
42
Yeah, I might go for Diet Coke with ice and lemon.
43
I like that as well.
44
Do you prefer to play chess on Computer over the board or on your phone?
45
I rarely play on my phone.
46
I would say I prefer to play on the computer
47
In your entire career, have you ever had a day where you went, I think this guy might be as good as me?
48
No. Well, I mean, not, you know, since not the last 10 years, for sure.
49
Has it ever been, this guy might be kind of close to me if I have a bad day?
50
Yeah, I would say Fabian at his best was very close in classical, for sure.
51
My other question was going to be, who do you think is the second best chess player in the world?
52
Yeah, I think Fabiano Corano is the second best player.
53
Do you remember the day you realized, oh, s*, I might be the best chess player on the planet?
54
That's a very good question.
55
I remember the first time that I was ranked number one in the world, unofficially.
56
That was in Bilbao in 2008, late 2008.
57
I didn't particularly think that I was the best player then.
58
I would say probably fall 2012 I was absolutely certain
59
that I was the best player but I did think back in 2010
60
that I would have beaten either player Topalov
61
or Anand in a world championship match in retrospect I'm not
62
so sure 2010 would probably be the time that I I thought yeah I'm the best player, but I wasn't sure until 2012.
63
Hey, it's me again.
64
I know interrupting an interview is slightly unconventional, but I wanted to explain Magnus' answer in greater detail so you understand all the context.
65
Well, the first thing Magnus says is 2008 in Bilbao.
66
That is a chess tournament that he played in Spain in September of 2008.
67
And in that tournament, Magnus actually unofficially became the number one ranked player in the world for a couple of days.
68
That's because in 2008, the official rating lists were published every three months.
69
Look, July and then October.
70
So you could play chess for three months and the official rankings would never come out,
71
but the players would shuffle all up and down against each other.
72
And he said that when he played that tournament in Bilbao against some of those best players in the world, like Aronian, Rajabov, Anand, Ivanchuk,
73
just to name a few, he didn't quite yet feel like he was number one in the world, but he broke through for a second.
74
In fact, in a New York Times article that was published the day before that tournament started,
75
Magnus literally said that he thinks Anand is a much better player than him.
76
I found that fascinating.
77
Now, fast forward to 2010.
78
Magnus said that he thought he could have beaten either player in a world championship match, Topalov or Anand.
79
Yes, he said in retrospect, he's not so sure, but Magnus actually turned down the candidates tournament in 2010 and 2011.
80
Which is maybe not something that we all know.
81
He declined to participate in the candidate cycle for the world championship actually multiple times in his career.
82
Until 2012, because the very next year Magnus played in the candidates, ultimately won it, and then went on to defeat Vichy Anand in 2013.
83
So it's interesting that by 2012 Magnus was certain that he was the best player in the world.
84
In 2010 he figured he could probably beat either player playing for the throne.
85
But in 2008 was technically when he first broke through and he was only 17 years old.
86
Anyway, let's get back to the interview.
87
I remember where I was the day that you played the final round in The Candidates.
88
I don't remember much from 10 years ago.
89
Okay, 2012, right?
90
2013 was The Candidates.
91
I don't remember much from 10 years ago.
92
I remember I traveled
93
that day on the New York City subway to meet my friend to go to the park and play handball.
94
And we were watching your game.
95
How stressful was that day?
96
I would say I was almost too exhausted to be stressed.
97
The day after my game with Rajaba was the first day in several days that I actually slept fine.
98
But I just woke up and had no nervous or any kind of energy.
99
So in retrospect, I probably should have forced a draw in that game
100
but I also almost didn't have time to be stressed about the outcome or anything because,
101
you know, I thought after I lost, I thought it was over.
102
And then I briefly checked the position from Ivanczuk Kramnik and Ivanczuk was winning,
103
so it only lasted like a minute or so that I was down about the results.
104
So, no, complete exhaustion, yes.
105
Stressed, not necessarily.
106
At those high stakes events like
107
World Championship or that candidates, how many hours on average do you get to sleep a night?
108
Normally I sleep well.
109
Especially if things are going well, of course, but normally I do sleep quite well.
110
In the World Championship I'll get solid seven, eight hours every night.
111
No melatonin, no chamomile, just hit the...
112
Yeah.
113
I don't know.
114
That seems pretty impressive.
115
I mean, we hear LeBron James spends millions a year on his body.
116
Do you feel like you need to do the same in chess, diet, chef?
117
There's some rumors, or I don't know if you confirmed it in some interviews, like you bring a nutritionist or chef with you.
118
You have like home -cooked meals at tournaments.
119
I have brought a chef to a few world championships and a few other tournaments,
120
specifically in places where we didn't think
121
that the local food would be necessarily at the standard I'd like
122
but yeah normally I try
123
and eat relatively healthy not too much not too much sugar apart from
124
that I was probably fitter before now I don't take care as much
125
which I kind of should now because I'm a little bit older and I have less energy,
126
so I actually need to be really fit to have a lot of energy.
127
So, yeah, it's definitely one room for improvement these days.
128
I'm going to offer you a deal.
129
For every Magnus thumbnail I make, I have to donate 20 bucks to a Norwegian charity, or any charity of your choosing.
130
No. No, no, no, that's okay.
131
I'm a bit of a narcissist anyway, so I enjoy it.
132
Okay.
133
When are you focusing on content and overtaking as the number one chess channel?
134
You have a Dorman channel with a million subscribers.
135
No. I know no wish for that,
136
but I do want to stream a bit more so that I can get more content out on these channels.
137
But just for people to have something to enjoy.
138
I'm gonna name a sport.
139
You have to tell me the greatest of all time.
140
Basketball.
141
LeBron James.
142
Soccer.
143
Messi.
144
I agree with both.
145
Baseball.
146
Barry Bones.
147
Okay.
148
Football like American football.
149
Tom Brady, I guess.
150
Okay.
151
Yeah.
152
Good one.
153
Tennis.
154
Djokovic.
155
Was it always Djokovic for you?
156
Or you thought maybe.
157
No, it was after the Australian Open thing that he became the greatest for me.
158
Was it Nadal before or Federer?
159
Probably Federer, but I always identified more with the way the medal plays.
160
Golf.
161
Tiger?
162
Poker.
163
Do I practice?
164
That's a unique one.
165
Chess.
166
Gary Kasparov?
167
Are you allowed to say yourself?
168
I don't know if I'm allowed, but I think Gary is the best of all time still.
169
Chess, boxing.
170
Amman Hamilton.
171
We know the answer to this one, I think.
172
If you could be the greatest of all time in a sport other than chess, what would it be?
173
Yeah, soccer.
174
Soccer.
175
What team would you play for?
176
Madrid?
177
Yeah, for sure.
178

179
No, I mean if they had money I would play in Saudi for sure.
180
Okay.
181
Can I answer the question about dream sponsor again?
182
Sure, yeah.
183
What is your dream sponsor?
184
Summer and Wealth Fund of Saudi Arabia.
185
Okay.
186
We're gonna play this or that.

210

211
It's really nice.
212

230
I'm gonna say that's such a player.
231
Yes.
232
Swedish, which is why it's...
233
Yeah, I mean, it's obviously Swedish.
234
You can hear from the name that it's Swedish, but...
235
Really?
236
Söder means, like, south.
237
Ah!
238
So, and it's written a bit differently in Danish and Norwegian.
239
Um, Ostano.
240
I think that's furniture.
241
You are correct.
242
You are, I think, the first one to guess that fast.
243
Fabi needed to know if there were dots on the O, which kind of gave it away.
244
Like the Swedish O and two dots.
245
Yes, two out of three.
246
Vesken.

Vesken?
248
How do you spell it?

That's got to be a chess player.
262
Yes.
263
Do you know who it is?
264
It's a Grandmaster.
265
Zaybi is a Grandmaster?
266
What's his first name?
267
Amir.
268
Amir Zaybi from Tunisia or something?
269
Yes, yes, yes.
270
How does that ring a bell?
271
You just know the name from somewhere?
272
Yeah, I probably have seen it somewhere.
273
Usually, I thought I would know the name of most Grandmasters in the world, but maybe not.
274
I don't know.
275
Well, I think he was an I .M until maybe five years ago.
276
Fabiano actually played him in the World Cup, which is actually...
277
Yeah, I mean, it rings some kind of bell.
278
Torald.
279
Torald?
280

287

288

289
I'm going to guess chess player then.
290
You're correct.
291
Marcelo Panelo, 2370.
292
Argentina.
293
Okay, last one.
294
Furniture or chess player?
295
Kallax.
296
And it's an A, there's no.. no...
297
Yeah, no, no, I tried to avoid those.
298
That would be too...
299
Okay, then I'm gonna say chess player.
300
Furniture.
301
Yeah.
302
Sorry.
303
Kallax.
304
Can I see how you write it?
305
Yeah.
306
Kallax.
307
K...
308
I hope I didn't mess that up.
309
For some reason, I thought it was K...
310
S.. then.
311
That was not easy.
312
I mean this is why the game exists.
313
I mean six out of eight is still pretty good.
314
Yeah, but I'm I have an advantage since I so to speak when It's kind of even language.
315
Okay.
316
Well next big tournament.
317
We'll do a we'll do the next one
318
So folks, I hope you enjoyed this conversation
319
And I hope that I was able to ask some questions
320
that I think were slightly non -traditional not something that you hear
321
When chess players are interviewed all the time
322
This was a very special one for me
323
because really only since 2020 have I become any form of personality out there on the internet.
324
I've always been a fan and spectator of chess as well as a chess player and teacher.
325
But being able to meet Magnus and many other top players over the last few years has been super special.
326
And I look forward to creating more media with them in the future because I think that it's helpful for you,
327
the viewers at home, to get a lens into some of the greatest chess players in the world.
328
beyond the 64 squares.
329
That's all I have for you today.
330
Until next time.
331
And before I go, also a massive thank you to Magnus.
332
He was in great spirits, and that was probably because he won some chess match earlier in the day, so that definitely made it easier.
333
But I look forward to having a conversation in the future.
334
Now you know the drill.
335
Get out of here.
