1
Hey, what's up?
2
Stephanie, the English coach here from EnglishFullTime .com.
3
In this video, we are going to do shadowing practice.
4
We're going to work on our pronunciation, natural rhythm, natural intonation, connected speech.
5
And just like the last time I made a video like this, we are going to use an email that I wrote myself and sent to my list of email subscribers back in 2020.
6
Now 2020, if you don't remember, was a really crazy year for the entire stay home.
7
It was just insane.
8
And for me on a personal level, the year was hard, not just because of the pandemic, but because of so many other things that I was going through at the time.
9
And because it was such a rough year for me, I had to take breaks from my work and I would just disappear entirely for months at a time.
10
And when I sent this email, I really wanted to update my subscribers and tell them
11
and be honest about how I was doing and how I was not doing well, Not only is this going to be really great pronunciation practice for you,
12
but you're also going to encounter lots of good useful words
13
and expressions and vocabulary that I think you will be able to use yourself
14
when you are talking about rough times in your own life.
15
Now before we get started I just want to let you know
16
that linked in the description I have put a free PDF
17
for you in case you want to print out this email right in the margins, circle things, highlight things, really dig into the material.
18
that audio file again and again without having to listen to this YouTube video and everything that I say in the video.
19
You'll just be able to listen to the material that you're going to shadow and practice that.
20
Okay, so in just a second, I'm going to start reading the email so you can hear how it sounds.
21
Again, listen to the rhythm, listen to the way I connect words, listen to my intonation, and you want to try and imitate that, okay?
22
You really want to try to match my sounds, match my pace, them, how I'm linking the words together,
23
words that I'm lengthening, words that I'm shortening, and the intonation, right?
24
The rise and fall, the melody of the words.
25
And then after I do this reading, I'm going to go over a few of the longer words
26
and break them down for you just in case you're struggling a little bit with the pronunciation.
27
So we'll have like a mini pronunciation lesson at the end of the video.
28
And by the way, I am going to be reading off of my be looking down a little bit.
29
Okay, let's get started.
30
Where have I been?
31
Hey!
32
When 2020 first started, I said this was going to be my year.
33
Last year was rough.
34
The year before that wasn't much easier.
35
But this year, This was going to be the year for all things good.
36
Mental well -being, balance, enjoying hobbies, growing the business, going on vacation and leaving my work at home,
37
finally getting control of my bad habits, and living with incredible focus and drive.
38
And well, look at us now, quarantined and locked down around the world,
39
sending memes about toilet paper and standing in line for hours just to get groceries.
40
What a weird world we live in right now.
41
I have no idea what life is like where you live, but if you're practicing social distancing like the rest of us, then chances are you're pretty bored.
42
Me too.
43
But truth be told, I've been practicing social distancing long before it was a buzzword on the news.
44
I was practicing all kinds of distancing, especially social media distancing.
45
Why?
46
Because this year, unfortunately, has been one of the hardest years of my life so far, and it has nothing to do with any kind of virus.
47
I don't want to get into the details, but I'll just say that I was dealing with some serious issues.
48
Stuff that sent me into a deep depression, made me lose the will to keep going, and finally had me calling therapists to get help.
49
It's the kind of ugly stuff that no one wants to talk about.
50
It's easier to go through life pretending everything is always peachy, but it's not.
51
And I've never been a pretender.
52
I can't make videos and teach English when I feel awful because people can read my face like a book.
53
I'm as transparent as a window and people can see right through me.
54
So I knew I needed to get myself in check before continuing with my work.
55
It has not been easy.
56
I've had endless stress, migraines, insomnia, and a lot more.
57
And that's weird because it takes a lot to push me over the edge.
58
Anyway, why am I telling you all this?
59
Because I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
60
I am finally smiling again, laughing and genuinely happy.
61
My drive is coming back and I'm finally getting back to so many projects that were put on hold,
62
like the new version of Connect and Communicate and the pronunciation course I'm making.
63
I want you to know that we all go through ups and downs.
64
Maybe you are even going through a really difficult time right now.
65
And if you are, just don't give up.
66
There will be light at the end of the tunnel.
67
There are people who love you and there are people who want to help you.
68
Thank you on helping you.
69
So That's it.
70
I just wanted to let everyone know I'm alive and well, or rather getting better.
71
And I hope to get back on social media soon.
72
I hope you're doing well and that you are taking advantage of all the downtime to relax and be productive.
73
We'll be in touch.
74
Talk soon, Stephanie.
75
Okay, so there you have it.
76
Now, it's funny because I actually did not end up finishing the new version of Connect and Communicate, although I still plan on doing that.
77
But I moved on to other projects, or I should say I chose to focus on other projects instead.
78
And I did end up making the pronunciation course.
79
In fact, I made a couple and the big one is an absolute beast.
80
It's a 12 week program.
81
It's amazing.
82
You should check it out.
83
I'll link it below.
84
from learning the basics of pronunciation, like just the sounds, to how to link them, American rhythm, intonation, connected speech,
85
reductions, all of that, and then you end by really
86
finding your own voice in English and choosing how you want to sound.
87
So it's a really intense program, but I cover absolutely everything that you would ever want to know about pronunciation in general in English,
88
but also speaking and how to speak persuasively and well and eloquently.
89
And again, how to find your voice in English
90
so you can use your voice to represent who you are and want to be in English.
91
So I'll put the link in the description if you want to check out that course.
92
But I also up making another course that's called the Amazing American Accent Sound Bank and all that course is,
93
is a deep dive on every single sound of my American English.
94
So it's not general American English or anything like that.
95
It's based entirely on the sounds that I use in my accent.
96
And I did this course
97
because I realized some students really need to dig very deeply into each individual sound to understand it
98
and train their ears to hear the sound correctly.
99
Because if you can hear it correctly, then you can imitate it correctly.
100
So I'll leave a link to that course below as well.
101
Now let's go back to the email
102
and I want to focus on a few different words
103
and I'm just going to say them slowly
104
and I want you to listen to how I pronounce each syllable
105
so that you can imitate and of course use this pronunciation when you are shadowing as well.
106
So the first word we have is incredible, incredible.
107
Okay.
108
In Cray, cray in CRE the bowl.
109
The ball credible, creda, creda, creda.
110
Creta, creta.
111
Bull, bull, bull.
112
Incredible.
113
Next we have quarantined, quarantined.
114
Quar, quar, quar.
115
Quar -in, in, in, in.
116
teened teened Teamed.
117
Quarantined quarantined.
118
Next.
119
Unfortunately.
120
on on UN for, for,
121
for, on for, unfortunate chin chin chin unfortunately chin it chin it chin it Lee Lee Lee unfortunately
122
Unfortunately.
123
Next, therapists.
124
therapists.
125
This one is a little bit tricky because of the ending.
126
You have the - Thanks.
127
you So an S and then a TS.
128
Farrah.
129
Sarah.
130
pissed.
131
- Thanks.
132
pissed.
133
- Thank you.
134
therapists.
135
therapists.
136
Next transparent, transparent.
137
So you have the word parent in there like I am a parent.
138
Transparent.
139
Transparent.
140
trance trance Parents.
141
Parent, pear, pear, pear, parent, parent.
142
transparent.
143
Next.
144
Genuinely genuinely, Jen, Jen, Jen, you genu -win, win, win,
145
win, li, li, li, genuinely, genuinely.
146
So that is it.
147
I have so much for you in this video.
148
I hope you take advantage of it.
149
I hope you learn something and have fun practicing.
150
I know that the topic of this email is a little bit sad and depressing, but you know, it's based on my real life.
151
And again, Life is tough sometimes.
152
OK, we all have ups and downs, so I wanted to choose something that I felt you could relate to.
153
Don't forget that you can download the PDF so you can read it yourself.
154
Practice reading it out loud.
155
You're also going to get the audio file of me reading the email.
156
That way you can just listen to that over and over and over again and shadow and repeat that.
157
And another really great thing that you can do with this email
158
if you print it out is you can actually highlight different words and phrases life.
159
I'll just run through this email again real fast
160
and I will point out some of the ones that I think could be useful for you and you can ask yourself, hey, do I use these words?
161
Do I use these phrases?
162
Because if you don't make a note of it, highlight them and you can start using them.
163
So for example, mental well being.
164
Okay, mental well being.
165
Getting control of my bad habits.
166
Getting control of my bad habits.
167
We're all working on that right now, right?
168
All of us.
169
All of us together, I'm sure.
170
Standing in line for hours.
171
Standing in line for hours, right?
172
I'm sure you've had to stand in line for hours before.
173
Then we have, I don't want to get into the details, okay?
174
There will be times where people will ask you something and you might want to say, hey, I don't want to get into the details of this, but, you know, something else.
175
I don't want to get into the details.
176
Next, dealing with some serious issues, dealing with some serious issues.
177
The will to keep going, the will to keep going.
178
Stuff that no one wants to talk about.
179
Okay, stuff that no one wants to talk about.
180
See how like, there are so many phrases you can literally grab from this email.
181
And you can use them in the next conversation you have in English
182
when you talk about things that are a little bit more personal.
183
Okay, in this part here where I said I've never been a pretender.
184
This is so true.
185
I have always been like this ever since I was a kid.
186
Like if I'm sad, I cry.
187
If I'm happy, I laugh.
188
I don't hide Thank you.
189
is no, that's no, no go.
190
I can't.
191
I will literally explode.
192
But I know some people are not like that at all.
193
Some people are able to keep it in and keep a straight face
194
and keep going on with life and everything like that.
195
So my question for you down below, if you care to share, what kind of person are you?
196
Are you the kind like me where you're like, I can't pretend if I'm mad, I'm mad?
197
Or are you the kind of person that's like, no, I prefer to keep a straight face and keep my emotions private and deal with it,
198
I don't know, like on my own so that people around me don't see what I'm going through.
199
So what is your way of dealing with these things?
200
Okay, oh another phrase, it has not been easy.
201
It has not been easy.
202
Okay, stress, migraines, insomnia.
203
I'm sure we've all gone through that at one point, so you need to know these words and how to say them, right?
204
Oh, finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
205
That's a good one.
206
Going through ups and downs, that's another one.
207
Okay, so like I said, there's lots of useful vocabulary and phrases and expressions in this email.
208
So I hope you have a fun time practicing everything.
209
And finally, I want to let you know
210
that I have some other free resources on my website that can really help you with your pronunciation.
211
I have a seven day pronunciation challenge that is completely free.
212
It has over eight hours of pronunciation training with me inside of it.
213
Videos where you can just watch them and I'm explaining
214
and I'm teaching and I'm talking and I'm going over different sounds and linking and all kinds of things.
215
Mindset work too, which is really important when it comes to pronunciation.
216
So that is a seven day free challenge.
217
You sign up, it's all automated.
218
Each day the challenge material will come to your
219
if you want to study all of the individual sounds that I use in English but quickly.
220
Okay?
221
And that is it.
222
I really hope you enjoyed the lesson.
223
Feel free to watch it as many times as you need in order to really start understanding
224
and hearing how the connected speech works.
225
And I cannot wait to see you in my next video.
226
Bye.
