Here at Loughborough we have two courses with similar titles and we want to explain the differences to you.

I study product design technology and I study product design engineering.

So this is a typical diagram of the design process for a product.

We start with a need for a new product and end up with a plan for production.

Both courses look at all the steps we need to go through but there's a difference of emphasis.

When you think about everyday products like a toaster.

There are multiple different choices from different manufacturers at different price points.

They will all have gone through this process with a team

of designers just like us working to create a product that does the job for a particular market at a particular price.

Both our courses teach us all these steps but the focus is different.

One of the areas we're really interested in for product design technology is user experience.

How do users actually interact with an everyday toaster?

What type of things do they want is toast.

Is it just there to toast or could we make it function as a mini grill as well?

In product design engineering we cover these areas too

but a big focus for us is the choice of materials and the techniques of manufacture.

How can we create a toaster that does the job as effectively as possible

and can be manufactured cost-effectively to a target budget?

Both courses give us the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest us.

Both courses have hands-on modules where we create prototypes using our dedicated workshops and labs.

There are lots of different roles in a team of designers and both of these courses will give you an excellent start.
