with story, music, and performance by Nathaniel Santa Cruz.
3
Let's begin.
4
Chapter 6.
5
Brother Wind Petipom woke to the sound of a quiet melody.
6
The autumn princess was playing her lullaby.
7
He wandered outside and began to listen,
8
watching as the leaves slowly turned from green to yellow, orange, and red.
9
Taking out his flute, Petit Palm played along.
10
The leaves began to dance, fluttering like wings swaying to the music until one by one they took flight and drifted away
11
soon the trees began to rustle the garden began to sway until suddenly
12
a great gust of wind swept across petty palms face Fixing his hat,
13
he looked out and murmured He's here Brother Wind is blowing in with gust of twirling air
14
He's dancing with the rustling leaves
15
and flowing through your hair With lungs of air the wind he blows He sways the trees both high and low
16
And with a howl all creatures know it's him Blowing in Brother Wind I better get back inside,
17
said Petty Pom Clutching his hat,
18
the young gnome pushed against Brother Wind When,
19
suddenly, a golden leaf swept across the porch And lifted him into the air He cried,
20
twisting and turning Pettypum clung to the leaf with all his might.
21
Higher and higher it soared,
22
until, at last, Brother Wind carried him all the way to the top of a tree,
23
Thumpkin's Birch Tree.
24
There, he latched onto a branch, swaying back and forth.
25
S-s-s-someone help me!
26
He cried.
27
P-p-p-please!
28
Inside the old birch tree,
29
Hamilton was still cozy in bed when he heard a faint and distant sound.
30
Sitting up, Hamilton rubbed his eyes and looked around.
31
He walked to the window and opened it.
32
A powerful gust of wind burst into the room.
33
Sister Flame went out, while twigs and golden leaves rolled across the floor.
34
Looking up, Hamilton saw Pettypong clinging to the top of the tree, calling for help.
35
Without hesitation, Hamilton leapt through the window and began to climb.
36
With each gust of wind,
37
he paused and braced himself.
38
Pressing on, he reached the trembling gnome and hoisted him onto his back.
39
Carefully, they made their way down to the nearest window.
40
Opening it, they rolled inside, tumbling to the floor.
41
At that very moment, Thumpkin was walking down the hallway in his robe,
42
holding a cup of tea.
43
Oh dear, said Thumpkin.
44
What do we have here?
45
Setting his tea aside, he quickly shut the window.
46
Pettypalm was stuck at the top of the birch tree,
47
explained Hamilton, still catching his breath.
48
Good garden, exclaimed Thumpkin.
49
But Pettypalm, are you okay?
50
Shivering, Pettypalm gave a quiet nod.
51
Without another word, Thumpkin understood.
52
He gently scooped up the young gnome and carried him to the fireplace.
53
There, Sister Flame reappeared and began to comfort him.
54
Hamilton, said Thumpkin, could you please go downstairs and fetch Petty Palm a fresh cup of tea?
55
Extra honey.
56
Hamilton nodded and hurried off.
57
Moments later, he returned and offered the tea to Petty Palm.
58
Gratefully, Pettypom took it with both hands and began to sip.
59
His breathing slowed and the shivering stopped.
60
Thumpkin took a seat behind him,
61
wrapped him in a warm blanket,
62
and began to encourage him with a gentle song.
63
I've encouraged your heart even when you're afraid.
64
Have courage, dear heart, friends will come to your aid
65
For when the wind blows and waters arise When shadows below are creeping at night Have courage,
66
dear heart, keep your eyes on the stars
67
Grow roots that run deep And you'll stay on your feet
68
For then you will know Just how you will grow Your strength not in might But of heart and soul
69
With grateful eyes, Pettypum turned to Thumpkin and said, Thank you.
70
Thumpkin smiled.
71
It's Hamilton whom you should thank.
72
He's the one who saved you.
73
Pettypum set down his tea,
74
stood up, and gave Hamilton a big hug.
75
Thank you.
76
He said, squeezing tight.
77
Surprised by the gesture, Hamilton relaxed and gently patted the young gnome on the back.
78
Thumbkin, looking on, gave a proud and approving nod.
79
At this, Sister Flame brightened the room.
80
Hoping to cheer up the little gnome,
81
she transformed the fireplace into a tiny theater and began dancing upon the logs,
82
spinning, twirling, and jumping.
83
Looks like we're in for a show, announced Thumpkin.
84
Pettypum smiled and told Hamilton it was called ballet.
85
As they all huddled near the fireplace to watch,
86
Hamilton turned to Thumpkin and asked,
87
Are brother and ancestor Flame part of the same family?
88
Thumpkin smiled and replied with a song.
89
All the world you know,
90
it lives and breathes and grows.
91
The wind and rain, the gentle flame,
92
the sun, the earth, and moon have names.
93
Just look around and then you'll see what brings this world to life.
94
Father, Son gives warmth and light,
95
and Mother Earth gives birth to life.
96
Brother, Wind plants every seed,
97
And Sister Rain waters everything Grandfather Moon,
98
he guards the night Sister Flame brings candlelight Together this whole family
99
Cares for the world for you and me Just look around and then you'll see.
100
As Thumpkin sang, Sister Flame danced on,
101
illustrating each verse with graceful, poetic movement.
102
Her flickering light shimmered across the room,
103
and as they watched, life returned to Petipom's face.
104
Before long, he was smiling, laughing, even dancing again.
105
spinning and twirling just like Sister Flame.
106
Outside, Brother Wind continued to blow,
107
gathering leaves to make a bed for Mother Earth to rest.
108
But inside the old birch tree,
109
there was peace, and all was well.
