Imagine looking out your apartment window and seeing something enormous destroying New York City.

That's the nightmare of Cloverfield.

The movie begins with a group of friends attending a party when a massive explosion shakes the city.

As they rush outside, they see buildings collapsing and realize something enormous is attacking Manhattan.

The creature is basically a walking disaster.

It's massive, extremely long, and capable of destroying buildings with barely any effort.

But what makes the situation even worse is that nobody knows what they're dealing with.

The military doesn't have a clear strategy, civilians have no idea where to run, and the city becomes completely chaotic within minutes.

They know they ain't telling me.

Whatever it is, it's winning.

The monster isn't the only threat either.

Smaller creatures called parasites fall from its body and attack people at street level.

Even if you avoid the main creature, these small monsters can still find you.

Then the military begins bombing parts of the city in an attempt to kill the creature, meaning staying in one place becomes just as dangerous as trying to escape.

Imagine being somewhere in Manhattan while buildings are collapsing around you and military aircraft are bogging the streets.

There would be nowhere that truly feels safe.

You could hide underground, but you wouldn't know whether the creature or the military would destroy your hiding place next.

And unlike a normal monster that you can potentially fight, this thing is simply too large.

Your best chance would be getting out of the city before the military response begins.

If you wait too long, there's a good chance there won't be a city left to escape from.

Forest God.

Getting lost in a forest is one thing.

Getting lost in a forest controlled by an ancient creature is something completely different.

The ritual follows a group of friends hiking through the wilderness of Sweden after the death of one of their close friends.

When they take a shortcut through the forest, they quickly realize they've made a terrible mistake.

Strange symbols begin appearing throughout the trees, animals behave strangely, and eventually they discover that something enormous is watching them.

The creature is a giant humanoid monster known as Motor and it's basically built for hunting people through the forest.

It can move through trees almost silently, overpower humans effortlessly and appears to know exactly where its victims are hiding.

But the biggest problem is that the forest itself seems to belong to the creature.

The survivors can't simply run in one direction because they've already lost.

Every attempt to escape only takes them deeper into the wilderness.

They also discovered that a local cult worships the creature and sacrifices people to it, meaning humans aren't necessarily going to help you either.

If you were trapped in this forest, you'd have to deal with darkness, exhaustion, limited food and a monster that knows the environment better than you ever could.

And unlike a normal animal, this thing isn't hunting because it's hungry.

It has been worshipped for generations.

That means your chances of simply waiting it out are almost non -existent.

Once you've entered its territory, the forest itself becomes the trap.

Winged Killer Some monsters are terrifying because they're powerful.

The Creeper is terrifying because it can basically hunt you for as long as it wants.

In Jeepers Creepers, siblings Trish and Derry are driving through a remote part of Florida

when they notice a strange truck following them.

Eventually, they see the driver dumping what appears to be a body into a large underground pipe.

When they return to investigate, they discover hundreds of bodies hidden inside.

Then the creature comes after them.

The creeper looks like a terrifying humanoid monster with wings, but its biggest advantage is that it doesn't just kill randomly.

Every 23 years, it wakes up and hunts for human body parts that it can use to replace its own.

Every 23rd spring, for 23 days, it gets to eat.

And once it decides that you're part of its feeding cycle, getting away becomes incredibly difficult.

It can fly, drive at insane speeds, survive injuries that would kill a normal person, and somehow always seems to know where its victims are.

Even worse, killing it isn't exactly an option.

In the first movie, Trish and Derry manage to escape its attacks, but the Creeper ultimately gets what it wants.

Derry is taken and killed, and his eyes are later used to replace the creature's damaged ones.

If you were being hunted by something that could fly after you, and simply disappear for 23 years before coming back, your best strategy would probably be getting as far away as possible.

Unfortunately, the creeper is very good at making sure its victims don't get that chance.

Cave Stalkers Getting trapped inside a cave is already terrifying enough without discovering

that you're sharing it with something that wants to eat you.

That's the nightmare at the center of the descent.

A group of friends travel into an unexplored cave system, hoping for an exciting adventure.

Instead, the trip quickly turns into a disaster when a tunnel collapses, trapping them underground with no easy way out.

And this isn't Borum Caverns, is it Juno?

We're in the wrong f*ing cave!

But being lost isn't their biggest problem.

They soon discover that they are not alone.

Living deep inside the caves are humanoid creatures known as crawlers.

They've adapted to complete darkness, meaning they can see and move through the caves far better than humans can.

They're also incredibly fast, aggressive, and perfectly suited for hunting in tight spaces.

You can't simply run from something like that when you're surrounded by narrow tunnels and nowhere to hide.

Every scream can attract more of them, and every flashlight can attract more of them beam can reveal just how many creatures are watching from the darkness.

The deeper the group travels, the more crawlers they encounter.

Eventually, the survivors aren't just trying to find their way out.

They're trying to avoid being surrounded.

And even if you manage to kill one, there could be several more waiting nearby.

The worst part is that you can't simply climb to safety because you're already trapped underground.

Your food and water are limited, your equipment can break, and panic makes every decision harder.

In a normal monster movie, you can run outside.

In the descent, there might not even be an outside left to run toward.

Eye Eater Not every monster needs to chase you across an entire city to be terrifying.

Sometimes, all it takes is one room and a creature sitting completely still.

In Pan's Labyrinth, young Ophelia discovers a strange fantasy world filled with terrifying creatures.

One of the worst is the Pale Man.

A tall, horrifying humanoid creature who sits at a massive table surrounded by food.

The problem is that his eyes aren't in his face.

They're located in the palm of his hands.

At first, the creature appears completely motionless, almost like a statue.

But once Ophelia takes food from his table, he wakes up.

He places his hands against his face, opens his eyes, and begins chasing her through the room.

The Pale Man is especially terrifying because his appearance gives you almost no idea what he's capable of until it's too late.

He's extremely fast when he wants to be, and his long arms allow him to reach victims from farther away than you'd expect.

And because Ophelia is trapped inside a strange underground fantasy world, there isn't exactly a police department she can call for help.

The creature also isn't something you can reason with.

It doesn't care who you are or why you're there.

If you enter its domain and break the rules, it comes after you.

Your only real chance would be avoiding it completely, because once that creature stands up and starts moving towards you, there isn't much you can do besides run and hope the door is close enough.

The Mother.

Imagine renting an Airbnb for the night, only to discover that someone or something is living underneath the house.

That's the nightmare in Barbarian.

The movie follows Tess, a young woman who arrives at a rental house in Detroit late at night, only to discover that the property has accidentally been double booked.

Another man named Keith is already staying there, and although Tess is suspicious at first, she eventually decides to stay.

Doors open by themselves, strange noises come from inside the walls, and Tess eventually discovers a hidden passage leading to a massive underground area beneath the property.
