1
Just because something's quantifiable and it's presented in a graph or a chart or a spreadsheet, doesn't necessarily mean it's true and accurate.
2
although our tendency is to accept it on face value.
3
you Welcome to Moments with Marty, your short, sharp shot of leadership insight to help you to stay on track between our weekly episodes of the No Bullshit Leadership podcast.
4
In a world where we have ready access to a mountain of information on pretty much everything,
5
Decision -making processes in many companies have become more and more about data analytics.
6
Now, relying more on facts and less on opinions is a good thing, right?
7
But in my experience, the best decision striker balance between quantitative and qualitative inputs.
8
Let's face it, some of the things that might influence your decisions defy accurate measurement.
9
but it doesn't mean they're not important.
10
And it doesn't mean you should ignore them.
11
Thank you.
12
The concept of using gut feel in decision making is sometimes frowned upon.
13
But over my years as a senior executive, I came to realise just how important it is to pay attention to your instincts.
14
When your gut is telling you something, you're receiving a message from your accumulated years of judgement and experience.
15
Now, just because something's quantifiable, and it's presented in a graph or a chart or a spreadsheet, doesn't necessarily mean it's true and accurate.
16
although our tendency is to accept it on face value.
17
We rarely question the efficacy of what's being presented.
18
But what was the original source of the data?
19
what assumptions were made in collating the data.
20
what's missing from this data that might make a difference to how we interpret it.
21
Interesting questions, right?
22
Most data has assumptions and bias built into it.
23
So it's important to question anything that doesn't quite feel right.
24
We sometimes call this crap testing or reasonableness testing um Now let me spell this out with a simple example.
25
Modern cars are designed to capture a whole host of information and they provide feedback to the driver.
26
We don't really question it.
27
One piece of information that we take for granted is the odometer reading.
28
How far has the car travelled since it rolled off the production line?
29
Now even though that data is captured directly from the car's internal systems, And we can rely on it almost 100 % of the time,
30
there are still circumstances where that data might come into question.
31
So, for example: If I see a brand new Tesla, with 5 ,000 miles on the clock, I'd be pretty inclined to believe that.
32
My judgment would coincide with the data point that I'm being presented with.
33
However, if I saw a beaten up 1985 Ford Escort with 5 ,000 miles on it, I'd rightly be a little bit sceptical.
34
My gut would tell me that the data on the odometer had somehow been tampered with.
35
We're constantly taking in information using all of our five senses.
36
We're constantly reading people's tone and body language.
37
MR. we pick up on non -verbal and visual cues.
38
We're continually calibrating different sources of information for consistency and patterns and exceptions.
39
- If we collectively call these things gut feel, then why wouldn't we rely on it?
40
It's entirely appropriate for us to use our experience and judgement to assess the reliability of any information that we're presented with.
41
and where no information exists, To use that judgment, to fill in the gaps.
42
Great leadership requires an integrated approach.
43
Head Heart and gut.
44
And if you want to make great decisions quickly, you need to recognise the value that each one of those sources of information can play.
45
For more depth on this insight, have a listen to episode 112 of the No Bullshit Leadership podcast.
46
Is gut feel a thing?
47
We'll leave a link in the show notes.
48
I really hope you enjoyed this moment and that it gives you that extra little spark to be a no bullshit leader.
49
you
