1
Hi, good morning everyone.
2
It's a beautiful Sunday, isn't it?
3
The last day of August 2025.
4
And hello to you.
5
Welcome back to the Tommy podcast where I believe a healthy life starts with a healthy mind.
6
So if you are on a journey to improve your English skills, brighten your day, and even sleep better at night,
7
you are in the right place.
8
It's been a while since my last solo episode.
9
The last few podcasts have featured some amazing guests, but today I wanted to do something special just me
10
and you in this episode to celebrate a personal milestone my
11
30 year birthday you see something special in this episode my speed is
12
so much slower I use the slower pace so
13
that everyone can watch everyone can understand what I am saying even you are a beginner level
14
or you are in an intermediate level, this episode is for you.
15
How you doing guys?
16
Honestly, I've been pretty busy with my big renovation project.
17
If you've been following me on social media, you may have heard that my house has just gone through two months of non-stop construction.
18
It took up almost of my time.
19
You know, during those two months, I wasn't focusing much on my business.
20
I didn't really release any new podcast episodes, no new campaigns, no fresh programs,
21
or even not my usual routines.
22
My daily habits were all over the place because I spent nearly every day on site from 6am to 7pm.
23
I was physically exhausted.
24
I barely meditated.
25
and my journal completely forgotten but
26
if you asked me whether I regret it I would say not at all I learned
27
so much about a field
28
that I never imagined I would know anything about construction I
29
met wonderful people who were always ready to lend a hand and maybe most importantly I got to reconnect with my family.
30
I moved back to stay with my parents for two months and it brought us closer than ever.
31
Now sitting here in my you know newly renovated space I feel amazing.
32
It was all worth it really.
33
The time, the energy, the chaos.
34
I now have more room for my work,
35
my life and especially for my little salmon who I'm I'm so so so excited to welcome into the world this October.
36
So yes, I've gained a lot during this time.
37
And if you're listening right now, and you're working on something deeply personal like your wedding, your first home, or your passion project,
38
I just want to remind you that there's no such thing as a wasted day.
39
And if you feel like you're not making any progress, you're still preparing, you're still growing.
40
Be proud of that.
41
Be present, be grateful.
42
You may have heard this before.
43
Good days give you happiness, bad days give you experience, and the worst days give you lessons.
44
The best days in your life give you memories.
45
So treasure each and every day.
46
Welcome it with an open heart and a positive mind.
47
You see, every day is beautiful.
48
Alright, enough chatting, huh?
49
Let's dive into the real topic of our today's episode.
50
Today's episode is personal, but also practical.
51
Because I'm about to share with you some of the most valuable lessons I've learned in my 20s.
52
These lessons aren't from textbooks or university lectures.
53
They are real.
54
They come from falling, trying, failing, learning and growing.
55
And I'm sharing them with you in the hope that you'll see yourself in them.
56
Maybe you've lived through something similar.
57
Or maybe you've read or heard about it.
58
Either way, I truly believe this episode will give you a lot to reflect on.
59
So if you're in your 20s right now, this episode is made for you grab a pen and a notebook
60
if you can because these lessons might just shift your mindset, help you overcome challenges and even change the way you live your life.
61
And hey, don't keep it to yourself.
62
Share this episode with someone you love. Who knows?
63
It might inspire them just like the way it will inspire you.
64
So, are you ready to make your 20s the most powerful years of your life?
65
Let's get into it.
66
Starting with lesson number one.
67
It is time to be independent financially and emotionally.
68
Yeah, I know it sounds a bit tough when you are in your 20s, but you know what?
69
It is time.
70
For most of your life, you've been taken care of.
71
From meals to your emotions from your housework to your everyday problems.
72
You've lived in a comfort zone where someone was always there to help, someone was always there to lend you a hand.
73
But now it is time to step out into the world.
74
It is time to get your first job and start spending your own money.
75
Not your parents?
76
And let me tell you, it feels amazing.
77
Really, I still remember getting my first job right after high school.
78
I made myself a promise.
79
Hey Tommy, you're gonna have your first month paycheck.
80
And with your first month paycheck, you're going to buy yourself a watch.
81
So I applied to work as a waiter at the coffee shop.
82
They paid me 11,000 Viet Nam Dong per hour.
83
I worked 6 hours a day and I earned 1.4 million Viet Nam Dong for that month.
84
And yes, I kept my promise.
85
I bought myself my very first Casio watch.
86
And to this day, it is still my favorite.
87
And you know why?
88
Because I earned it.
89
It wasn't about the brand or the price.
90
It was about the feeling, the pride of buying something with my own effort, with my own money, and that feeling changed me.
91
So no matter how financially stable your family is, learn to stand on your own feet.
92
Because the money from your family isn't really yours.
93
It won't be your confidence the way earning your own will.
94
This stage of your life is sensitive.
95
You're no longer in the safety net of your loved ones.
96
Maybe you're living away from home.
97
Or maybe you're starting a job.
98
Maybe you're facing tough moments without anyone to fix things for you.
99
This is when you start learning emotional independence.
100
You must learn to care for your own mental and emotional health.
101
You have to learn how to be happy on your own.
102
Because let's be real, people won't always be there.
103
No one is coming to save you every time you fall.
104
So why not be that person?
105
The one who picks yourself back up every time.
106
Be the one who says, I've got this.
107
So when you can feel joy without needing someone else to give it to you, when your happiness no longer depends on other people.
108
That is when you become whole.
109
And no one can take that away from you.
110
So that's lesson number one.
111
Be independent, financially, emotionally.
112
Yes it's hard, but trust me, it's worth it.
113
Lesson number two.
114
Choose your circle wisely.
115
You may have heard this quote before.
116
Tell me who your friends are, I'll tell you who you are.
117
Now think about this, if a flower doesn't bloom, do you blame the flower?
118
Or do you check the environment, the soil, the sunlight, the water, or the temperature?
119
It is the same with us.
120
You are a product of your environment.
121
In fact, you become the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with.
122
Let's imagine this, you are a positive and kind-hearted person,
123
but you spend most of your time with the people who constantly complain, smoke or swear.
124
At first, you might feel like, ah, the art won out.
125
But over time, you start to adapt.
126
You want to feel accepted, you want to fit in.
127
So little by little, you change.
128
You pick up their habits, you lower your standards, and you start being you.
129
But now imagine the opposite.
130
Let's say you are someone who struggles with procrastination, but suddenly you're surrounded by ambitious people,
131
people who set goals, take action, stay disciplined, and always strive to be better than who they were yesterday.
132
Guess what?
133
The energy rubs off on you.
134
You start to think differently, you level up.
135
That's the power of your circle.
136
So here's the truth.
137
settle.
138
If your current situation, if your current environment doesn't help you grow, leave.
139
If you're surrounded by the people who make you feel small, unmotivated, or disconnected from your true self, it's time to make a change.
140
And yes, I know it's not easy, not at all.
141
It takes courage to walk away from familiar people.
142
It is hard to say no to the group, especially if they've been a part of your life for a long time.
143
But sometimes the bravest thing that you can do is to choose yourself.
144
Don't try to fit into an environment that isn't meant for you.
145
Find a one where you feel inspired, challenged and free to be yourself.
146
Because when you are in the right environment, you don't have to force growth.
147
It happens naturally.
148
So that's lesson number two, choose your circle wisely.
149
Lesson number three, fail as much as you need to, but just make sure to learn each time.
150
Let me tell you something, the roads we walk today were not always there.
151
They were created by the people who dared to take risks, people who failed adjusted and kept moving forward.
152
And now others follow those paths because they lead to a better destination.
153
So if you always stay in your comfort zone afraid to try something new, then nothing will ever change.
154
You've probably heard this one before, if you want something you've never had, you have to do something you've never done.
155
But here's the truth, trying new things comes with risk.
156
failure and sometimes even with discouragement and depression.
157
But the people who win, the people who grow, are the ones who get back up every time they fall.
158
You've gotta accept it, you are going to lose sometimes, you are going to make mistakes, but that's not a bad thing, that's life, right?
159
Don't expect the road to always be smooth.
160
see challenges as opportunities, failures as lessons, because here's the truth most people overlook, you learn nothing from winning,
161
well you learn everything from losing.
162
I've failed so many times in my life.
163
I still remember my first interview to become an English teacher.
164
It was terrible.
165
I didn't know how to present myself in the demo section, I was not confident, and of Of course, I didn't get a job.
166
But I learned.
167
And the next time, I did better.
168
Now years later, I'm the one interviewing others.
169
And talking about my first business, it failed too.
170
But I took everything I learned from that failure and used it to build my current business.
171
Even my TikTok campaigns, not all of them worked.
172
Some completely flopped.
173
But from those failures, I discovered what works best for me.
174
And now, you know my current campaign has gone viral,
175
Daily English Speaking Challenge, all because I wasn't afraid to try and I wasn't afraid to fall.
176
That's the point.
177
Failure is a part of the process.
178
You have to be willing to take risks.
179
Because what matters most isn't being perfect.
180
It's figuring out what works best for you.
181
So that's lesson number 3.
182
Fail as much as you need to, but just make sure you learn from each time.
183
Let's move to lesson number four.
184
You'll never feel a hundred percent ready but start anyway.
185
You've probably heard people say I'm waiting for the right time.
186
I'll start when everything is perfect.
187
I will start when I am ready.
188
But let me tell you the the truth.
189
Starting is the perfect condition.
190
If you keep waiting for the right moment, the perfect energy, the ideal setup,
191
the magical motivation, you'll end up waiting forever.
192
That kind of thinking is just a beautiful excuse your mind creates to delay what's important to you.
193
So here's the better way to look at it.
194
Stop chasing perfection and start chasing progress.
195
Just aim to be a little better every single day.
196
Even just like 1% better every day.
197
You may have heard a Japanese concept called Kaizen.
198
It's one of my favorites.
199
It's all about making small continuous improvements over time.
200
Instead of trying to make a big leap, break your goal down into small and manageable steps and take them one by one.
201
Let me give you one more example, speaking in English.
202
This is what I see in almost every English learner.
203
They wait.
204
They wait until they feel ready, until they feel fluent, until they feel perfect.
205
But the truth is, that day never comes.
206
You don't improve your speaking by thinking about it.
207
You don't improve, you're speaking by reading, by listening.
208
You improve by actually speaking out.
209
That's why I started my daily English speaking challenge on social media.
210
I encourage people to make short one minute video every day talking about anything in their life.
211
It doesn't have to be special.
212
It doesn't have to be well prepared.
213
And it definitely doesn't have to be perfect.
214
But it does have to be consistent.
215
After a few days, thousands of people joined, and you know what?
216
Many of them messaged me saying their English had improved.
217
They sounded more confident, they felt braver,
218
and they feel so much more comfortable speaking English in front of the camera using English.
219
But the credit?
220
It's not mine, it is theirs.
221
Is there courage to start when they didn't feel ready?
222
Is there consistency that made the difference?
223
So here's what I want you to remember.
224
You will never feel 100% ready.
225
Your first video, your first podcast, your first presentation will be bad.
226
It won't be perfect, but you can't make your 100th without your first.
227
And that's exactly where growth begins.
228
If you haven't heard of my daily English speaking challenge yet, you can check it out on my TikTok or Facebook and join me.
229
Let's grow together one step at a time.
230
Here's another example, this podcast.
231
When I first started this podcast campaign, it felt impossible.
232
I thought to myself, this is way too hard, I can't do this.
233
It seemed like such a big challenge, but then I just did it.
234
This is episode number 17.
235
I recorded the very first episode even though it wasn't perfect.
236
And now, here I am.
237
Episode number 17, talking to you with so much more confidence than when I began.
238
That's how growth works.
239
So take action, start, even when it's messy, even when you're unsure.
240
That's how everything begins.
241
That's how I approach almost everything, even the big projects that work at first, it always feels impossible.
242
Overwhelming.
243
So my brain starts to procrastinate, but I've learned to break things down.
244
I write the tasks out, one by one and tackle them piece by piece with a clear plan.
245
And that is when I feel ready.
246
That's when I feel confident.
247
Here's the truth.
248
Clarity, motivation, and confidence, while you're doing the work, not before you start.
249
You almost never feel like doing anything before you do it.
250
But once you get into it, the energy builds, the momentum builds.
251
So don't wait to feel ready.
252
Just do it.
253
And let the motivation follow.
254
That's lesson number four.
255
You'll never feel 100% ready.
256
But start anyway.
257
Let's move to lesson number 5.
258
Comparison is a thief of joy.
259
You're not behind, you're just on your own timeline.
260
Let's be honest, social media has its benefits.
261
We can learn new things, we can connect with other people, we can even get inspired or motivated to do something.
262
But there's one big problem, and that's the part that I really hate.
263
Most people mistake social media for reality.
264
But it's not.
265
No one shows you the full story.
266
They only post the highlights, the best parts of their life.
267
The success, the fun, the perfect smiles.
268
What you don't see?
269
Their struggle, their self-doubt, the pain behind the scenes.
270
So when you scroll and compare your life, your real life, to someone else's highlight reel, you start blaming yourself.
271
feel small behind and not good enough and you're stuck.
272
Let me tell you this, don't let other people rush you with their timeline.
273
Everyone gets to the top of the mountain in their own way.
274
Some might get there earlier, some later, but you will get there in your own time and on your own path.
275
There's no fixed route to success.
276
There's no universal timeline.
277
There's no such thing as being behind in life.
278
So life is not a race.
279
You're not in competition with anyone else.
280
The only person that you need to beat is the you from yesterday.
281
So be you, be authentic and most Most importantly, enjoy the journey.
282
Social media is a double-edged sword.
283
So be mindful, be aware.
284
Use it for growth, not for guilt.
285
I used to compare myself a lot too.
286
But then I realized that I'll never know the full story behind someone else's success.
287
So it's unfair to compare myself to them.
288
Now I use it as fuel, to work harder, to grow and to become better, not to feel small.
289
So that's lesson number 5.
290
Comparison is a thief of joy.
291
You're not behind.
292
You are just on your own timeline.
293
This is lesson number 6.
294
Develop the ability to be disliked.
295
This might just be one of the most important lessons in life.
296
You've got to learn to be okay with being disliked.
297
You've got to be okay with being misunderstood and yes, even judged.
298
That doesn't mean that you are doing anything wrong.
299
Sometimes people criticize you not because you've hurt them, but because you remind them of something that they don't have.
300
confidence, your courage, your growth, and that triggers their insecurity.
301
So when people throw shade at you, it often comes from a place of jealousy or hatred or even pain.
302
That's their problem, not yours.
303
Your name will be spoken in rooms you've never entered.
304
You'll be discussed by the people you've never met, and that's alright, life.
305
I've had people say negative things about me, my work, my ideas and even my accent.
306
Some people dog behind my back and honestly, I'm fine with that now.
307
I feel like, ah, that's a normal thing to have in life.
308
Because here's the truth.
309
If you are a people pleaser, you're just like a dog chasing its own tail.
310
And no matter how fast you run, how hard you try, you're never going to catch it.
311
You can't please everyone, and you're not supposed to.
312
So stop seeking validation from everyone else.
313
Seek validation from yourself.
314
If you believe in what you're doing, if your attention is all good,
315
if you're not hurting anyone else and if you are aligned with your values, then keep going.
316
Don't let the negative voices hold you back.
317
Don't water yourself down to make others comfortable.
318
Don't give up on being your authentic self.
319
Be you, unapologetically, because not everyone will understand you.
320
That's alright, you weren't born to be liked by everyone.
321
You were born to live your truth.
322
So that's lesson number 6.
323
Develop the ability to be disliked.
324
It's not a weakness, it's a strength.
325
So this is the last lesson I've learned in my 20s.
326
Lesson number 7.
327
Plan your life.
328
Let me paint you a picture.
329
Imagine you are about to go on a trip.
330
You're packing your suitcase.
331
But if you're not really thinking about it, you just throw You fold things into your suitcase randomly,
332
your shirts, your socks, your paints, your shoes, whatever.
333
No folding, no order.
334
What happens?
335
You run out of space, and it's like a mess.
336
You can't find what you need, you're stressed, you end up forgetting something important.
337
You feel familiar?
338
But now, I want you to imagine you take your time.
339
You fold clothes, you organize everything packed with attention, and suddenly, you are able to fit more.
340
And everything makes sense.
341
Your life is like that suitcase.
342
If you don't plan it, you're just throwing in random stuff and hoping it all works out.
343
But when you plan your life with thought, with care, you create space for purpose, you create room for growth.
344
Now people may say, oh come on, you're young, just live freely.
345
You don't have to force yourself into any rules, do what you love, forget structure.
346
And sure, I get it, freedom matters.
347
But let's be honest, freedom without direction is just drifting.
348
And life, life isn't a practice test.
349
You gotta remember that, you only get this one shot.
350
So don't waste it just going with the flow.
351
Have a direction.
352
So personally, I take time to reflect at the end of every day, week, month, and even year.
353
I sit down, I look back, I ask myself, what worked, what didn't, what can I do better?
354
Then I write down my goals, my big rocks, and I break them down into smaller steps.
355
That's how I stay on track, and that's how I celebrate my growth.
356
And honestly, that's why I rarely miss important things in life.
357
And I also have a lot of time enjoying my life.
358
Here's something important I've learned.
359
Respect yourself.
360
If you say you're going to do something, do it.
361
No excuses.
362
Show up for yourself like the way that you would show up for your best friend.
363
Don't write your goals down and leave them in a dusty notebook.
364
Nope.
365
Look at them.
366
Work toward them.
367
Honor them.
368
And yeah, plans can change, that's alright, but your purpose, your why, that should stay strong.
369
So if you are already planning your life, keep going.
370
But if you haven't started yet, now is the time.
371
Because lesson number 7 is simple but powerful.
372
Plan your life, don't just exist, live with attention.
373
And that's it.
374
Those are 7 lessons I've learned from my 20s.
375
I truly hope you found them helpful.
376
Maybe you've been through some of them already, and this was a moment of reflection.
377
Or maybe you haven't faced them yet.
378
And if that's the case, I hope these lessons become tours you can carry with you on your journey.
379
Remember, your 20s are one of the most beautiful, exciting, and powerful chapters of your life.
380
Make the most of them.
381
in yourself even when others don't.
382
Do what you love and never be afraid to try new things even if they scare you.
383
So thank you so much for spending your time with me.
384
And if you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to hit that subscribe button,
385
share it with your friends and follow me on whatever platform you are listening on.
386
Take care, keep growing and I will see you in the next one.
387
Good night and goodbye.
