1
Hey guys, welcome to my channel.
2
Today I'm gonna share my story of how I started thinking in English
3
and when we don't think in English we tend to speak slower,
4
we tend to translate things in our heads and we just tend to be less proficient in our English.
5
So thinking in English is a key thing for you to move from being intermediate to upper intermediate advanced
6
and native speaker levels.
7
So if you're interested, continue watching.
8
If you think that this could happen overnight, it cannot, unfortunately.
9
So my story is I started thinking in English for a couple nights when I was in the UK.
10
I think it was my second
11
or first visit it was really early on I was a teenager
12
so the process went faster so what happened every morning
13
when I woke up in my homestay with the host family I will be really embarrassed about my English
14
because my brain is still sleeping and they would ask me questions in English
15
and I'll be like oh my god they're asking me about my breakfast
16
but the only way I can say what I want is in Russian in my native language
17
because I just woke up
18
and this was the hardest moment to switch languages throughout the day
19
but by the evening
20
because I was communicating solely in English with other people it
21
would be really easy for me to talk about what I want for dinner
22
or just you know discuss anything and
23
because I spent the whole day thinking in English I went to bed thinking in English
24
and then I think it was my week three and normally
25
when you go to learn your language somewhere during summer you stay for like maybe four
26
or five weeks or whatever but by week three i went to bed thinking in english
27
and i had a dream in english and i woke up in the morning
28
and i realized i'm actually thinking in english and
29
that was like this huge transition for me
30
because i didn't have this switch in the morning
31
because i woke up with my brain functioning in english already
32
and my level back then was i think upper intermediate
33
so it's pretty good in english not spoken english i was good at grammar it's good vocabulary uh
34
but this switch was crucial and um remember um coming down to the kitchen
35
and sharing with my homestay that hey guys i just dreamed in english
36
and it went away i came back to russia it went uh it went away
37
because i switched back to speaking russian i switched back to reading in russian
38
but i created some tips for myself because i really wanted
39
that feeling to stay with me throughout my life
40
and i really wanted to still be able to think in english even in my own home country
41
so i have created a couple of rules for myself
42
that i followed carefully until i moved to the us and when you're in an english -speaking environment super easy so
43
well rule number one travel to an english -speaking country stay with locals as often as you can
44
linguagetrip .com all the programs are listed there
45
so um you know select the one that fits you
46
but yeah that requires your time and money
47
but this is the most effective way this is
48
when i went through this transformation
49
when i came back to russia the second thing i did
50
um i brought a lot of books in english with me
51
and a lot of magazines you don't have to go somewhere
52
to bring stuff in english you can just go online
53
but for me switching to reading in english only
54
and i told myself okay starting this day for all the non -study related materials i'm switching to english
55
because this is the way to introduce this practice of consuming information in english
56
into my everyday life
57
so maybe you follow this rule as well maybe you tell
58
yourself hey from now on i will only do fun stuff in english
59
so whether it's a youtube video whether it's instagram whether it's a book
60
that you're reading maybe you know switch it to english
61
and the third thing that is really still working for me here in the u .s
62
when you learn a new concept in english
63
so for example right now i'm learning a lot about like childbirth and pregnancy and i realized that
64
when i encounter a new topic in english
65
and i learn all the terms i cannot think about this topic in my native language
66
because i don't even know what things mean i cannot translate them
67
because i learned the concepts in english straight away i'm not
68
doing this translation in my head the fourth tip is
69
that all of us are doing these translations like
70
when we're at school we learn that this is a pencil but We don't learn the concept.
71
We learn the translation and they tell you a pencil in your own language
72
And this is how your brain learns the word, but this is the wrong way This is not how kids learn language
73
and your goal is to learn a language like as
74
if you're a kid So
75
when you're learning a new concept you get rid of this stuff
76
So for example if you want to read more about photography
77
or if you want to read more about filmmaking blogging do
78
that in english and
79
if you encounter a new concept you just google it you go to images
80
and you read what that word means without translating it
81
and this is the key i remember
82
when i moved to germany for a semester to study mathematics i learned
83
so many new words regarding econometrics and like mathematics in german
84
and then i came back to russian i couldn't speak russian during my classes
85
because everything i knew was in german this is like game changer as well
86
so learn new concepts in english
87
and do not translate stuff from your own language into english try to learn them as a as a concept
88
and of course um other daily activities
89
that you can switch to english again our goal we have
90
12 hours a day right we do a lot of stuff in our native language just
91
because we're surrounded by it
92
but our goal is to take all the things during the day
93
that can be done in english and do them in english
94
so the next thing of course switching your phone um your
95
smartphone your laptop to english this is like number one thing you should do after watching this video uh
96
because this is the key the next thing you could do is um
97
if you have a daily planner if you have your habits tracker
98
if you have whatever um like a calendar where you're writing things down do
99
that in english again this would tell your brain okay
100
when i was a kid by way i had a diary where i wrote down all of the activities
101
that happened to me during the day well i could i think i did it till i was 18
102
or 19 i did it first in english
103
because i didn't want my parents to understand what was going on
104
and then i switched to german and i did it in german
105
that was again amazing practice for me and
106
because i really wanted to do it and
107
because i really had a goal of other people not getting
108
what i'm writing about it was great way to practice languages another exercise
109
that i would recommend doing is
110
if you have a favorite song try to write down its lyrics
111
while listening to it there would be some words you won't
112
be able to understand you will look them up later
113
so your goal
114
when you're listening to a song is just writing down everything you understand maybe leave some blanks
115
and my task to you there are a lot of songs out there
116
that you can practice with
117
but the most challenging song for me was a song by modest monkey float on do
118
that first like start with that song you'll be so confused
119
but the other songs will be so easy
120
so you just switch on the song
121
and you write the lyrics down helps you with listening helps you with thinking in English
122
and well it's gonna improve your listening dramatically
123
and the key thing in all of the things
124
that I mentioned is being regular
125
so you start with just one thing per day maybe like even like switching your phone to english
126
and then you introduce more and more and you
127
if you have an activity tracker
128
and it really looks like it's oops hello it's a really simple thing uh
129
when you can make it yourself like activity tracker for example you have english
130
song and here you have gym and here you have your supplements
131
or whatever and like every day you just put a plus in front of a thing
132
that you've done so try to introduce a daily habit of like an english song
133
or reading in english but
134
when you do reading tell yourself read at least like 10 pages
135
because otherwise reading is very vague you're like ah i've read a text message in english
136
10 pages at least and then every day like monday tuesday wednesday
137
so super easy to make you just put a dot in front of things you've done
138
and this way you develop a regular habit
139
that was it for me guys i hope you enjoyed watching this video

144

145
that you're doing in english every day thank you so much and i will see you in the next videos
