1
At the start of this year, I set a goal for myself to go backcountry camping alone for the first time.
2
But when I moved to the mountains three years ago, the thought of camping by myself scared the fucking shit out of me.
3
My gosh, this is actually insane.
4
Honestly, it still does.
5
But as the year progressed, solo camping stopped feeling like something I want to do, and started feeling like something I need to do.
6
So for the next three days, I'll be venturing 10km into the remote Canadian wilderness, home to bears, cougars, and all sorts of wildlife.
7
Hey bear!
8
A place with no designated campground and no cell reception.
9
Just me and my thoughts.
10
I'm sorry.
11
Alright, so I'm about 20 minutes into this trail.
12
My pack is definitely heavy, but to be fair I did pack a lot more than I usually do just to be safe,
13
make sure I got everything.
14
And it just passed an old man who actually did the trail that I'm doing.
15
He started at 1am and he was telling me
16
that there were definitely signs of bears in the area
17
so not the first thing you want to hear but we're still gonna keep going.
18
The plan is hike four kilometers today and get to this beautiful meadow
19
that I've always wanted to camp at
20
and hopefully we get a killer sunrise there tomorrow
21
and then hike the remaining 7k to the spot
22
that the old man was talking about
23
and then set up camp there for night two so that's the plan and I'm stick to it.
24
Yeah let's do this thing.
25
Adventure begins.
26
Okay, so there's this beautiful stream running through the meadow here, and I've been trying find a way to cross it for the past 20 minutes
27
but it's been pretty deep but I just found a spot here where it narrows out
28
and I'm gonna jump across because I feel like I found a really cool shot
29
with the river as a leading line so I'm gonna try and snap that right now.
30
Yeah it's really cool being out here
31
because I have been out here multiple times
32
and I've always looked at certain shots and certain locations to go see
33
and visit and just like explore and I just haven't you know I've either been like passing through or
34
something like that so it's gonna be really fun to just explore for the rest of the day
35
but like come on this is absolutely insane it's crazy
36
that I get to call this my backyard my home yeah definitely grateful for that
37
Okay, so the light is getting pretty nice and I just found this really cool frame right here.
38
These two trees framing the peak in the back.
39
What a cool mountain.
40
I love the reds and the yellows in front too.
41
It's absolutely beautiful.
42
Come on.
43
Like how do we not just like… What are we doing sitting in front of just like computers
44
and spreadsheets all day and
45
this is what it's about you know this is my happy place
46
so I'm glad to be out here and let's go find camp Alright.
47
All right, so it is dinner time and I'm learning that I packed a ridiculous amount of food.
48
Like, maybe I like subconsciously packed for like two people, but there's a ton of food here.
49
Like it almost doesn't even fit in the bear bin.
50
Let me show you.
51
so this is where we're at right now she's almost stuffed to the brim
52
but I still have these all this stuff and then my nudes are they're cooking right now so
53
kind of yeah I don't know I mean I haven't really eaten today so I have to have a good dinner
54
but this is like an incredible amount of food
55
so I don't know I do love to eat
56
I love to eat in the backcountry is one of my favorite things to do I mean
57
it's one of my favorite things to do period but food just tastes better out here I find so mmm so good
58
Honestly, today has been incredible so far.
59
Like, it is so beautiful out here.
60
It's actually crazy that you can do this type of stuff for free.
61
But, yeah, I don't know.
62
I feel like in many ways this is, like, exactly what I needed.
63
I know I kind of alluded to that at the beginning of this video, but I haven't given you too much context.
64
So, but yeah, truthfully for the past two years I have like really really struggled with self -confidence
65
and yeah self -love and self -acceptance
66
and yeah obviously that's weighed a lot on me mentally
67
and it's also not just affected me but it's also affected my relationships, particularly my relationship with my partner.
68
And yeah it's just like been a constant
69
cycle of like overthinking you know and and indecision and yeah lack of self -trust and
70
I don't know it's manifested in me not knowing what I want to do with my career
71
and not committing to a direction
72
and yeah just like really just beating myself up mentally and
73
And in a lot of ways this trip was meant to be proof, like a way of building proof that I can take care of myself
74
and that I can do hard things and
75
that I can step into the unknown and thrive and come out on the other side.
76
So yeah, I think it's been that even just until this point.
77
I'm excited to see what the next day holds because I'm going a little bit further into the backcountry.
78
but yeah honestly it's just like really exhausting to have your mind constantly getting in the way
79
you know that's something that I'm desperately trying to change
80
and yeah you're capable of
81
so much more than you think I feel like the mind always makes
82
it out to be worse than it actually is you know
83
so I don't know I just wanted to share that because
84
if you're struggling with anything similar to what I have over the past couple years, then I just want you to know that you're not alone.
85
And, um, yeah, sometimes it's worth doing things like this, pushing your comfort zone so that you can grow.
86
And, uh, I know that's cliche, but, um, it's the truth.
87
So yeah, just reflecting.
88
I think that's what the mountains do to me.
89
They make me reflect in a beautiful way.
90
Uh, that's why I love coming out here.
91
Um, obviously it can be daunting to, uh, to be out here alone but it's also incredibly peaceful like
92
so so peaceful that's one thing I'm loving about it so far and yeah that's it for me
93
All right, the sun is up.
94
Let's go.
95
Look at this.
96
Damn.
97
What a morning.
98
We're getting the glow here on the peaks behind me, as you can see.
99
And wow, this place is beautiful.
100
What a morning.
101
Bring you up here to show the view.
102
This is where I slept last night.
103
This is my home.
104
Unreal.
105
Okay, so last night was definitely cold, but it honestly wasn't as cold as I thought it was going to be, so that's a plus.
106
It was also super bright last night.
107
It literally felt like somebody was shining a light into my tent, but it was obviously just the moon,
108
and I remember peeking my head out a couple times and looking at the view, and you could see everything perfectly.
109
It was like kind of wild.
110
So that was really cool.
111
But yeah, I'm just like trying to finish up my oatmeal right here and I did my morning routine.
112
So I like to wake up and drink water
113
first thing in the morning and then I like to do some gratitude journaling.
114
So I'll write down like three to four things
115
that I'm grateful for every day and then after
116
that I do like a 10 -minute meditation and that's something I've started recently and honestly it's been
117
I think it's been really helpful so far
118
and it's something I'm excited to like practice more going forward
119
for someone like me who has such a busy mind I think it's gonna really just like do wonders
120
so yeah I did that out here
121
and like what a friggin place to do it you know
122
so today's trail is definitely more rugged than yesterday's trail
123
it's a bit more like off the beaten path not a lot of people do this hike
124
I have to cross the river I suspect I guess we'll kind of find out you know
125
So I'm gonna finish my oatmeal and then pack up and then hit the road.
126
Let's go Yeah
127
Okay, so I'm a bit more alert on this section of the trail.
128
It's far less traveled, a lot more overgrown as you can tell already.
129
And yeah, for whatever reason I was up a couple hours before sunrise this morning
130
and my mind just latched on to the idea of a bear encounter.
131
I don't know why the mind does that sometimes, thinks of worst case scenarios, but for whatever reason mine did this morning
132
so yeah just gonna kind of stay alert make my presence known
133
and enjoy this beautiful hike so yeah looks like we're coming up on the first river crossing now
134
damn that's cold
135
Hey bear!
136
Okay, so we got a bit of an outfit change here as you can see.
137
Starting to heat up.
138
Couldn't ask for better weather.
139
if the only thing I got to deal with is some cold evenings, then that's a gosh darn good day.
140
Wow.
141
It's windy, but we made it baby.
142
Let's go!
143
Oh damn!
144
Okay, now I gotta find a camping spot.
145
Woo!
146
Oh!
147
Woo!
148
Woo!
149
Unreal.
150
Oh baby, let's go!
151
I'm sorry.
152
I honestly can't even tell you how happy I am to have this tent up.
153
After three failed attempts at setting up camp higher in elevation, I decided to settle on this spot,
154
one kilometer back in the direction I came from.
155
Here, there was far less wind.
156
For now, anyways.
157
This was my first real test of adversity
158
and I'm glad it didn't end up worse than a broken mic and a lost stuff sack.
159
Because for a second there, I thought I was about to lose the only shelter I have for the night.
160
Alright guys, I gotta tell ya, I am friggin' gassed.
161
My legs are so sore and yeah kind of just taking it easy.
162
We're settling, settled at camp and obviously this wasn't my first choice of campsite but this place is beautiful you know.
163
We still are right next to the river.
164
We have this beautiful waterfall in behind if you can see that.
165
And then this peak in behind me which is the view that I'll wake up to in the morning is unreal.
166
So definitely no complaints.
167
Yeah, just a small hiccup.
168
But, you know, maybe that was Mother Nature trying to test me.
169
You know, she knew I came on this thing trying to push my comfort zone.
170
And she was like, okay, I'm going to throw something your way just to test you a little bit.
171
And maybe that's what it was.
172
But, yeah, we prevailed.
173
We've set up camp in a new spot.
174
It's far less windy.
175
That wind was insane earlier.
176
So I'm glad that that's over with.
177
But, yeah, settled.
178
I'm going to try to set a fire later when it gets a little bit darker.
179
But yeah, just cozying up right now.
180
After fueling up for the evening, I took some time to catch up on a book I've been reading.
181
Green Lights by Matthew McConaughey.
182
In his words, a green light is an affirmation of our way, a sign that we're on the right path.
183
Sometimes they're obvious, other times not so much.
184
For a moment they may appear red or yellow, but eventually they turn green.
185
In other words, the struggles you're facing now will likely make more sense later,
186
which is something I've been trying to hold onto as I navigate this rather dicey season of my life.
187
You can never really know when the red light will turn green, you just have to trust that it will.
188
It's pretty windy tonight as you can tell.
189
Sometimes it feels like my tent is just going to completely cave in on itself.
190
So it's kind of hard to sleep.
191
I get woken up whenever the tent gets just bombarded with wind, but it's alright.
192
One more night out here, and then we're back in a cozy bed.
193
My gosh, this is actually insane.
194
I feel like I'm about to blow away.
195
I'm pretty sure the left side of my tent is no longer structurally sound,
196
so I might have to get out of here and fix that because I can't sleep like this.
197
There's no way.
198
Look at this.
199
Oh, it's coming again.
200
Oh my gosh.
201
This is actually insane.
202
Alright.
203
Alright.
204
I gotta deal with this.
205
I was hoping the rest of this story would kind of just right itself.
206
An epic sunrise and a clear hike out to make the night of suffering worth it.
207
But instead, I woke up to snow, cold and groggy from no more than two hours of sleep.
208
But looking back on the past few days, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride.
209
I did it.
210
Beautiful.
211
I did the thing that scared me for over three years and came out the other side.
212
I guess I can take care of myself.
213
That voice inside my head was wrong.
214
And for the first time in a long time, I feel free.
215
Still uncertain about my direction, but no longer in a rush to figure it out.
216
Just curious to see where it goes.
217
Greenlight.
