1
Can I learn two languages at the same time?
2
Well, the answer is yes you can, but I probably don't recommend it.
3
So look, learning a language is hard and it takes time, whatever language you're learning, okay?
4
And the amount that you progress in a language is directly proportional to the amount of focus
5
that you can bring to the task.
6
So if the goal is to learn a language or even two languages as quickly as possible, then the worst thing you can do is to split your focus in half by learning two languages
7
because not only are you now spending less time on the first language, but you've also split your focus, which means you go slower.
8
So to learn two languages at the same time would probably take three
9
or four times longer than it would to just learn one language because of that split in focus.
10
So if the goal is speed in language learning, then it's much better to learn one language first, learn it well, and then move on to the second language
11
because you are then bringing the power of focus to the task.
12
Having said that, not all of us are in a big race to the finish line.
13
A lot of us just want to learn languages for the sheer joy of it
14
because it brings so much to our lives, enriches so many different parts of our day-to-day.
15
And so if you are really passionate about two
16
or even three languages and you want to learn all of them at the same time, then I say go for your life
17
because life is too short not to study and pursue the things that you are interested in.
18
One tip I would give you though is to make one language your main focus
19
and spend 80% of your time on that one language
20
and then have the other two as kind of on the back burner
21
because at least then you're able to bring most of your focus to the primary language.
