Shadowing Practice: Eucalyptus Trees Are Built For Fire?! - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
Trees and fire don't usually mix well, so it's pretty strange that the eucalyptus tree is a pyromaniac.
2
Both its bark and leaves contain a natural kind of lighter fluid, and as they shed, they cover nearby plants and flammable kindling.
3
Any tiny spark can then cause the whole surrounding forest to go up in flames, and once the fire reaches the eucalyptus tree itself,
4
all that flammable fuel causes the tree to basically explode,
5
turning the scene into a five -alarm for the eucalyptus,
6
because eucalyptus seeds are basically fiber -proof.
7
Once all the surrounding plants have burned, there's tons of space for baby eucalyptus trees to repopulate the forest.
8
Many trees actually rely on fires to help them spread their seeds.
9
Most, like longleaf pines and giant sequoias, produce seeds that are sealed with resin.
10
When a fire comes along, it melts that resin and releases the seeds.
11
That way, all of the seeds germinate at the exact right time, when there's actually space cleared for new trees to grow.
12
But since those trees don't actually cause fires, their seeds sometimes have to lie dormant for decades until their lucky break.
13
The eucalyptus, on the other hand, makes its own fiery brand of luck.
