1
What do you consider your biggest mistake?
2
Okay, well my biggest mistake was staying loaded for too long.
3
I was loaded for practically 40 years, so if I would have just cut
4
that in half I could have had 20 years of productivity that I bypassed to just have a good time.
5
Why did that happen?
6
Well having a good time was really
7
appealing and a lot of times I became you know addicted
8
so it was just to so I could be well and
9
and then a lot of it was I mean gosh imagine
10
you can have a lifestyle where you can have wild sex
11
and no responsibility and I I chose
12
that over being a contributing member to society how do you want to be remembered
13
oh gosh with a smile well you want to be remembered as being really smart well
14
that would be nice but I'm sure
15
that there'll be a good healthy dose of he was really crazy
16
or really uh talented but really crazy and then there are some
17
that will say that I was really smart
18
but you know a lot of times people will ask did
19
you know let's say you know using Lollapalooza as an example did you know
20
that it would become what it is today I always respond by saying no
21
because i'm always caught up in the moment i don't really see
22
that far now i see far ahead but i'm not really almost that worried about myself i i like to drive
23
my mind into the future seeing what the future at large would look
24
and sound like and uh i would like to be included, surely.
25
I would like to be remembered as a person that loved everybody and stimulated people's minds and their tailbones.
26
I doubt that I'm around, but if so, you got it.
27
You know, you've been quoted as saying, the world's a funny place.
28
First of all, I'm going to ask you what you meant by that, the world's a funny place.
29
Well, I look at it as cosmic humor it can be
30
so bizarre and you know i don't look at death as the end
31
or final as i really believe in reincarnation
32
or we go to another place another dimension james addiction became
33
the most influential rock band of the 1980s what made the band the most important band of the 1980s Well,
34
I think it was the music industry in those days.
35
People did not really know where to go.
36
They had just come out of the 70s, and the 70s were amazing.
37
But then after that, like most things, it began to get stale,
38
kind of like potato chips.
39
I don't know.
40
You know, after a while, it gets pasteurized, homogenized, corporatized.
41
And when it comes to music and art, that is a recipe for disaster.
42
Well, nobody knew what to do.
43
So they just kept on going to try to make rock bigger and bigger stadium rock.
44
There was a lot of money in it so everybody was thinking money money money and then we came along and
45
I was thinking fun fun fun you know I was thinking art art art
46
and with that in mind I didn't have anything to lose
47
because I wasn't afraid of not making money I didn't think
48
I was gonna make any money to be honest with you you know

Speaking Goals for This Clip

This video is ideal for practicing conversational fluency and natural self-expression. The dialogue features casual, reflective speech—perfect for mastering how to share personal stories, opinions, and introspection in English. It targets the milestone of speaking with authenticity, as Perry Farrell uses pauses, colloquialisms, and emotional tone to convey meaning. Phrase Bank

  • "staying loaded for too long" (describing prolonged substance use)
  • "bypassed to just have a good time" (choosing pleasure over responsibility)
  • "caught up in the moment" (focused on the present)
  • "a recipe for disaster" (a situation likely to go wrong)
  • "stimulated people's minds and their tailbones" (entertained both intellectually and physically)

These phrases are reusable in daily conversations, especially when discussing past choices, societal trends, or personal legacy. They add color and specificity to your speech.

Fix Your Weak Spots

The video excels at helping you practice rhythm and intonation in reflective speech. Farrell’s pauses (e.g., "Well, I think it was the music industry in those days...") and emphasis on key words ("fun fun fun," "art art art") show how to use pacing to highlight emotion. To improve, try the shadowing technique: repeat his lines immediately after he speaks, mimicking his tone and pauses. This trains your mouth and brain to match natural English flow. Focus on words like "gosh" and "you know"—these filler words are common in casual speech and make you sound more native. With shadowspeaks practice, you’ll learn to balance fluency with expressiveness, turning stilted sentences into engaging stories.
