all right hey everyone Riley here for becoming an electrician.com in
2
this video I want to talk to you about how to strip the jacket off of your wire
3
so this is like house wire your NMD 90 okay
4
now I just released a video about my favorite knife as
5
an electrician I like an exacto knife as I said a
6
knife is one of those things that's always up for debate
7
with electricians you got to be very careful with an X-Acto knife
8
and I'll show you how to be careful and how to strip your wire very well in this video okay.
9
So before we get into the video definitely check out my free book I have for you guys as Apprentice Electricians.
10
Just go to becominganelectrician.com forward slash subscribe and you can download my free book for Apprentice Electricians okay.
11
So the first thing to say before you strip your wire
12
so again let's say we are in a residential setting imagine my hand is a stud.
13
What you want to do is you want to have a service loop okay.
14
So what this is is if anything happens to your wire,
15
so for example, imagine this is in the box,
16
if the drywaller comes and nicks it with their router,
17
you are able to pull the wire into the box, okay?
18
So you always wanna have a service loop.
19
You don't wanna have a huge service loop like this,
20
but you just wanna have just a little service loop, okay?
21
So again, imagine my hand is the stud,
22
and you have a little service loop,
23
and then what I would do is,
24
let's say this is the box,
25
I wanna strip from there, okay?
26
So I keep my thumb here,
27
and then again, I'm gonna take my X-Acto knife.
28
Now again, this one is brand new,
29
so I gotta be very careful, because it's very sharp.
30
But the golden rule is do not put it out super far.
31
So something like this, okay?
32
Now, when I do this,
33
I am not putting it through the wire.
34
I am scoring the wire, okay?
35
So from here, and so what I do is I put my two fingers underneath,
36
I put my thumb about here,
37
it allows me to guide,
38
and again, I am just gently scoring it, very, very gently, okay?
39
So I'm not going through.
40
So this right here is called the jacket.
41
Inside the jacket is the conductors, okay?
42
And then as soon as I get to the end,
43
that is where you can put your knife in and you cut, all right?
44
But what this is going to do is check this out.
45
So when you pull it,
46
it's going to go very, very easy, okay?
47
And then what I would do is you just do this, okay?
48
So again, always be careful of your fingers,
49
but if this was stapled to a stud,
50
cut it, it wouldn't fall, okay?
51
Because it would have been stapled to a stud.
52
So the wire is just dangling there.
53
Now you can easily just put this into a box.
54
Okay.
55
And so that's it, right?
56
You have your little service loop,
57
you've stripped it, you put it into the box and that is how I strip a NMD wire.
58
Okay.
59
With an exacto knife, you gently score it that way you are not compromising the wire at all up here.
60
And once you get down there,
61
you can put your knife in,
62
you go a little harder and cut through,
63
then you can just pull the jacket away.
64
And so there you guys go.
65
So that's how you strip wire.
66
So again, check out my other video about my favorite knife as an electrician.
67
It's this Milwaukee.
68
It's an 18 millimeter snap knife.
69
It was always just really nice in my side pocket.
70
You got to be really careful because they are very sharp.
71
A lot of electricians, like I said,
72
everyone has their own opinions when it comes to knives.
73
But this is what I have always enjoyed in my 10 years of being an electrician.
74
You just got to be careful.
75
And if you are careful,
76
I know what you're doing.
77
It allows you to strip your wire really easy.
78
It also allows you to be really versatile when you have to cut other things on the job site,
79
such as like if you know,
80
if you get a delivery and and stuff like that okay
81
so that's how you strip wire
82
if you guys have any questions you guys can leave your comments below
83
and again don't forget about my free book I have for
84
you guys you can download it by going to becoming an
85
electrician comm forward slash subscribe it is a book for apprentice electricians teaching you some valuable tips
86
when I was becoming a journeyman okay thanks for checking out the video I'll talk to you in the next one
87
