1
Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of our This and That podcast with me Rob.
2
And me Dahlia, hello.
3
Hello Dahlia, how are you?
4
Very well thank you.
5
I haven't really been up to anything interesting but something funny did happen to me this week.
6
if you want to know.
7
I looked in my cupboard and I saw a jar and written on the jar by me was a poison.
8
Endless adventures at Dahlia's house.
9
It's because it was actually the name of a type of chili flake
10
because I love chili
11
and there are all these different types like one is called
12
silk you know it's less spicy one is more oily
13
and this one the really really really spicy one is called poison chili
14
but obviously I know it's chili so I don't need to write chili
15
so I thought anybody coming to my house who opens the cupboard is going to be shocked
16
that seems pretty good you that's the only sorry I'm being
17
so judgmental now that's the only fun thing
18
that happened in a whole week um well the weather's lovely
19
um I have a friend visiting today no I've been on holiday
20
so I'm catching up I think everybody can relate to that you know like You've got all the washing to do, you have to clean the house It's got a bit dusty
21
Refilling the fridge So it's been a very boring adult week to be honest That's fair enough,
22
we all have those I'm sure everyone listening at the moment is nodding along furiously Yeah, absolutely You, have you opened your cousin,
23
opened your cupboard to any I've opened cupboards,
24
not cousins recently I guess the most interesting thing I've done in the last week is I went sailing You went, I'm sorry, you went sailing?
25
I went sailing and to answer the question that automatically comes after I say that, no it wasn't posh How can sailing not be posh?
26
I mean were you like on a shipwreck?
27
What happened?
28
I wasn't on a shipwreck, so there was a local sailing club near where I live Sounds posh It's not posh,
29
because we went there and they had basically an open day
30
It's a volunteer run sailing club One day a year They let anybody come and try sailing for free For free?
31
For free, absolutely Sorry, don't you live in Nottingham?
32
There's no sea there There's no sea, but there are lakes Ah, okay But doesn't it have to be very windy?
33
No, not particularly So it wasn't, well, it wasn't very windy So to get us back to shore I did have to do some paddling But no,
34
it was really good It was like the small sailboats that you imagine, like the really basic ones.
35
This is why it's not posh.
36
My feet got soaked.
37
It wasn't kind of like a huge galleon or anything like that.
38
I don't even know what a galleon is.
39
It's like a pirate ship kind of thing.
40
Oh, very cool.
41
Yeah.
42
So, no, we did that and it was so much fun.
43
And we also went out on a powerboat going around the lake
44
that was really fun is that i don't know what
45
that is either is that like a motorboat it has a motor exactly it has a motor
46
and so yeah we did that as well
47
and it was a lovely charming day
48
and we wanted to sign up for membership for the sailing club
49
because we were we fell in love with it immediately
50
but they ran out of places due to popular demand
51
and we were sad that's a bit badly the organizer reeling you in and then not letting you join?
52
Well, it's volunteer run and at the start of the day they said, oh, if you do want to sign up, we've got three more places available.
53
And I was thinking there's like 150, 200 people here.
54
Like, I know most of them won't sign up, but even if three of them do, which is what happened when we got around to talking to the guy and saying like,
55
oh so what about like membership
56
and stuff he was like nah okay wow well this actually
57
kind of relates to our topic today ish oh of course absolutely
58
so today our topic is we are talking about whether it is better to have a rainy day walk
59
or to stay indoors by the fireplace well and
60
if people don't know this is called this or
61
that where you have to choose between two extremes and
62
And I think this is kind of popular on the internet right now.
63
I've seen lots of videos.
64
Absolutely.
65
It's probably not popular the way we do it, which is to pick both.
66
But that tends to be what we do.
67
We either pick neither or both.
68
That tends to be our approach.
69
Neither or both.
70
And if people don't know, these podcasts are unplanned.
71
We don't know what each other thinks.
72
So I actually don't know which one you're going to choose.
73
I can guess.
74
It's terrifying.
75
It's so scary.
76
So ladies first.
77
if you have to pick one either you're going to go for a rainy day walk
78
or you're going to stay in by the fireplace
79
which would you choose well as usual i love and appreciate both
80
but let's do something fun why don't you guess why don't you guess
81
which one you think i'm going to pick if i had to
82
if there's a gun held to my head so i've got a 50 50 chance i think that's really hard I mean,
83
things that I know about you would lead me in both directions.
84
If I have to pick, I would say the fireplace.
85
The other one.
86
But I would love that too.
87
That's the point.
88
Sure.
89
Because I was thinking you're quite adventurous.
90
I could see why you would like the idea of like,
91
yeah, let's go out when it's raining and also have the kind of peace of being out in the rain as well.
92
am I in the right area as to why you like
93
uh the rainy walk basically yeah I love I am quite
94
extreme I think I do love being outdoors I love uh recently went camping
95
and actually went for a rainy walk um
96
and I love being in forest you know love running I
97
love being in nature I love going up mountains unfortunately I don't do it as much as I would like
98
because you know it's a big deal you've got to have all the right equipment
99
and most importantly you've got to have people with you who are used to doing it
100
because I would love to go up mountains
101
but I'm scared of getting lost by myself and well dying
102
and the rain rain doesn't bother me because I'm English you know
103
but I also I'm very much a homebody I love sitting at home
104
and reading and stuff like that and it's funny
105
because the fireplace I was thinking my friend went skiing she lives in France so they go skiing
106
often of course and she said oh we should go one day
107
and I was like yeah cool I mean that sounds great
108
but I want to have at least one day where I sit by the fire
109
and I drink hot chocolate and read my book
110
and no one bothers me so that's a good I think summary of
111
that I enjoy both I would enjoy both the skiing even though I'm not good at it
112
and the uh atmospheric sitting by the fire Right.
113
I would pick the other one.
114
I would probably pick the fireplace, although saying that as well, that's what I thought.
115
There is a huge charm to going on rainy walks, and I've done many of them.
116
The fireplace thing, this is actually a little bit difficult to describe,
117
but one of my happiest memories from the past is Christmas Eve.
118
And I wonder, Dalia, do you know what I mean when I say carols from kings?
119
It sounds familiar I'm very familiar with carols I've been in many choirs But isn't that a particular set of carols?
120
Should we define what carols means for any listeners?
121
Oh yes, okay, carols To define carols, we should probably Carols are particularly Christian,
122
I believe I don't know if you have carols in other religious They're Christmas songs They're Christmas religious songs.
123
That are sung together specifically, usually in church.
124
Yes, usually with a choir.
125
Yeah.
126
Usually with a group of people.
127
So Carols from Kings is a TV show that they always have on Christmas Eve.
128
In the huge, huge church, the cathedral.
129
My grandma would listen to that, watch that.
130
Yeah.
131
So the cathedral in question, it's at Cambridge University, I believe.
132
With all the young boys in the white gowns, cloaks.
133
Precisely, yeah.
134
And they will sing a variety of different Christmas songs.
135
And the way it sounds is very, very beautiful and it's very, very peaceful.
136
And one of my favourite memories is on Christmas Eve, being next to the fireplace, surrounded by what I would call comforting darkness,
137
not scary darkness, because there's two kinds, and listening to that.
138
So I have a lot of happiness and peace attached to being around the fireplace.
139
Oh, that's lovely.
140
With nothing particular to do.
141
And, you know, no light on a path.
142
The only light source would be the fireplace.
143
And that makes my heart sing.
144
So I think I would choose that.
145
It's lovely.
146
I mean, I was only talking to someone yesterday.
147
And we were saying that fires are such interesting things because when people sit around a fire, they automatically just sit and stare at the fire.
148
And we were saying
149
that it's kind of one of the only socially acceptable places where it's acceptable to just sit and not talk.
150
If you were doing that anywhere else, you'd be expected to talk to each other.
151
The silence would be weird, but it's one of the only places where you can just sit and stare and enjoy the fire.
152
Absolutely.
153
Absolutely.
154
One thing my wife likes to do, we don't do it that often, but she really does like it,
155
is just to put in the background when we're just, you know, sitting around or doing normal things,
156
put a video on YouTube of a crackling fireplace.
157
Oh, yeah.
158
I used to go to sleep.
159
That used to really help me sleep.
160
The sound of a crackling fire is so relaxing.
161
Absolutely, yeah, so I would pick
162
that Now I want to be fair to rainy walks
163
Because they are wonderful I very much like rainy walks Particularly
164
when you can get to a place Where you're shielded from the rain And you can just watch it happen Oh yeah,
165
cosy That's wonderful I don't like being in the rain very much Especially if the rain is strong
166
If I know that I can get changed pretty soon And I'm going somewhere warm then I think it's not that bad. But yeah, if you know you're going to be stuck all day wet
167
especially wet feet I mean wet feet is the worst thing ever absolutely agree with
168
that yeah there was a time
169
when I was in Beijing with uh my wife who wasn't
170
my wife at the time she's just my girlfriend then
171
and her best friend we were just walking around an area of Beijing going to get some dinner
172
and it rained so hard like much harder than it typically even does in the UK
173
like torrential rain absolutely torrential and they were fine walking along you know having decent conversation
174
and enjoying themselves
175
and I just said to him like I have to stop
176
like my my shoes are 100% full of water I just cannot continue walking like this
177
and it didn't bother them at all.
178
It bothered me hugely.
179
Interesting.
180
Any idea why it didn't bother them?
181
I don't.
182
Well, they're probably more grown up and mature and resilient than me would be my guess.
183
Fair enough.
184
Yeah, that's probably the actual answer, but I'll pretend it's something else instead.
185
You know, something just came to mind.
186
You know, I just said I've been on holiday.
187
This wasn't planned.
188
We didn't choose today's topic because of that.
189
But that's actually a perfect example of how extreme I am
190
because I took so much stuff which I really regret
191
and I had to lug it and it was really awful
192
but the reason I had so much stuff is
193
because I really love both
194
so I had walking boots for camping I had my running shoes for running
195
and all the clothes that come with
196
that like the thermals the rain jacket the jumper but I also had a backpack full of my kindle
197
my notebook my pens my books my this and that
198
so I was prepared for both and I'm not advocating for
199
that because it was a misery to lug it around
200
but yeah I appreciate both well it's interesting I bet you
201
could tell a lot about a person by looking at what
202
they've taken with them for travel well well the first word
203
somebody would probably use is high maintenance I mean I don't No, if you have a lot of stuff, then I don't know.
204
You could read that many ways.
205
You could possibly read it as high maintenance, but you could also read it as like, well, the person likes a lot of different things.
206
And, you know.
207
It's true.
208
And plans to do a lot.
209
Yeah.
210
I mean, it was quite funny.
211
I had a head torch alongside fountain pens, which was quite funny.
212
So literally, whatever situation, whatever kind of niche situation happens, I've got the particular thing. So like.
213
I'll be there in the middle of a field making a note with a hundred pound fountain pen with a head torch.
214
Absolutely, carving into a tree.
215
Absolutely not, my god, I'd damage the pen.
216
Don't even joke about it.
217
No, no, I mean like with a Swiss army knife or something like that.
218
I would love a Swiss army knife, I would really love one.
219
I do have a bottle opener on my keys for opening mineral water, so that's as close as I'll get to a Swiss army knife.
220
Jolly good.
221
Okay, excellent.
222
So we need to wrap up there.
223
So interestingly, we both did pick one today.
224
We actually picked one.
225
We did.
226
And they were different.
227
Wow, wasn't that exciting.
228
Okay, so it's great to see you, Dahlia.
229
You too.
230
I hope everyone listening is having a wonderful day and we will be back for our next episode soon.
231
Indeed.
232
And let us know in the comments which one would you pick, why, and are they the same as ours?
233
Absolutely.
234
Okay, so see you all soon.
235
Bye bye.
236
Take care.
237
Bye bye.

What You'll Practice in This Lesson

Get ready to dive into a casual, conversational English lesson inspired by a lively podcast chat! In this practice, you'll learn to follow and mimic natural, everyday dialogue—perfect for improving your listening comprehension and speaking fluency. You'll hear how native speakers like Rob and Dahlia talk about their weeks, share funny stories, and discuss hobbies like sailing. By the end, you'll feel more confident with relaxed, real-world English.

Key Vocabulary & Phrases to Master

  • Catching up: Getting back on track with tasks or relationships (e.g., "I'm catching up on washing after holiday").
  • Open day: A day when a place (like a sailing club) invites the public to visit or try activities for free.
  • Volunteer-run: Organized and operated by people who work without pay (e.g., "a volunteer-run sailing club").
  • Soaked: Completely wet (e.g., "My feet got soaked from paddling").
  • Popular demand: When something is so wanted that there isn't enough (e.g., "They ran out of places due to popular demand").

Practice Tips for Shadowing Success

The video's tone is friendly and unhurried, making it ideal for shadowing—a technique where you repeat phrases right after the speaker. Here's how to make the most of it: Start by listening once to get the gist, then play short 5-10 second clips. Pause, and repeat the lines aloud, matching the speed and intonation. Focus on how Rob and Dahlia stress words like "poison" (for humor) or "free" (with surprise). Use a shadowing site to slow down the audio if needed—tools like these help you nail pronunciation and rhythm. Remember, shadow speak isn't about perfection; it's about training your mouth and ears to work like a native. Try mimicking Dahlia's playful tone when she teases Rob about sailing being "posh"—it's a great way to practice natural expression. With consistent practice, you'll notice your English sounding more fluent and confident in no time!
