Pratica di Shadowing: How To Effectively Leverage Skip Level 1 1s - Impara a parlare inglese con i video

1
One thing that happens pretty frequently at these tech companies, especially big tech companies, is a skip level one -on -one, which basically means you don't talk to your direct manager, you talk to their manager.
2
So you know, someone who's kind of two steps removed.
3
So I'm curious, in these skip level one -on -ones, what have you seen as the most effective way to take advantage of that time with this skip level?
4
From the perspective of the engineer, I think one of the best uses at the time is
5
that you can take it as an opportunity to try to understand the broader strategy of the company
6
or the broader strategy of the organization that you're a part of.
7
One question that you can try asking at your skip level to try to get
8
that is to just ask them what their priorities are, right?
9
Ask them like, hey, what are the top three things
10
that you're working on as the skip level and person who's responsible for this organization?
11
What are the things that you think are going really well for the organization?
12
What are the things that are keeping you up because you think that they're not going very well for the organization?
13
And I think
14
that all of it is meant to help engineers build a better understanding of the strategy around the product
15
and the business that they're a part of.
16
And so hopefully when it comes time to you making technical choices in your job as an engineer, you'll have a better frame of reference for making those tradeoffs.
17
Totally.
18
And actually, I think it goes back also to this idea about a nose for impact, right?
19
If your skip level manager says, hey, here are my top three or four priorities, and you can't draw a line from the stuff that you're working on to one of those three things, you're probably not working on the right thing.
20
So yeah, I'm also curious about how, is there an opportunity or a place in a skip level one -on -one to basically provide a status update and say,
21
hey, here are the challenges that I'm facing on my team, or maybe with my own manager, is that appropriate ever in a skip level?
22
So I would say there's two things that maybe are a little counterintuitive, but I really encourage with skip level one -on -ones.
23
And one is be candid.
24
There's no need for you to try to impress your skip level.
25
There's honestly not much value in that. If anything, I think the best way to for both people to get
26
good value out of the time is for you to give a really honest view
27
because one reality for skip level one -on -ones is
28
that they operate oftentimes at an altitude where they have blind
29
spots you know there are some things about their organization
30
that they just don't see because they're not in the day -to -day work right
31
and so you as the engineer
32
if you're able to you know give concrete examples of interesting things
33
that they should be aware of i think that's something
34
that they would really value and then the second part of this
35
that i would say is um you know be willing to challenge their ideas uh i i can tell you
36
that in the skip level conversations
37
that i've had where i was a skip level um those
38
were actually always the most interesting conversations to me uh when
39
when my ideas were challenged and and the reason I say that is because,
40
you know, I care a lot about the whole team being bought into what we're doing, right?
41
And if I say something that an engineer that I really respect calls BS on, I think there's a pretty good chance that,
42
you know, at face value, there are other engineers on the team that would call BS on it as well, right?
43
And so like, as the skip level, I want diagnose that.
44
I want to get to the root cause of why there's disagreement.
45
Maybe it's that I didn't explain my point of view or the company's point of view well enough in a particular situation, but I could also be wrong.
46
I think getting a different perspective, an honest perspective, especially from an engineer that I really trust, that's some of the most valuable time that I can spend.
47
Totally.
48
And I feel like the other aspect is that, you know, the skip level managers probably happen infrequently, but they're not happening on a weekly or bi -weekly basis.
49
They might happen once a month or once every quarter.
50
And so I imagine that that's super valuable, not only for you as a skip level, but also as an ISEE to get that broader perspective.
51
Yeah.
52
Yeah.
53
I think so.
54
You know, it's because it's a relatively rare perspective that you get, you know, it's, there are ways in which I think
55
that time can be used in a way that's really effective
56
and and it really all just comes down to being forthcoming with each other about what you see
