107
However, fundamentally we do want to focus on hair because hair is the foundation of what's going to enable that growth.
Tuttavia, fondamentalmente vogliamo concentrarci sui capelli perché i capelli sono il fondamento che consentirà quella crescita.
108
And so what we like to focus on is keeping things as simple as possible.
E quindi ciò su cui ci piace concentrarci è mantenere le cose il più semplici possibile.
109

111
The smartest thing you can do is the simplest way, the simplest way to success.
La cosa più intelligente che puoi fare è la via più semplice, la via più semplice per il successo.
112
Why?
Perché?
113
Because in our industry we fall into the trap of making it seem difficult to do.
Perché nel nostro settore cadiamo nella trappola di far sembrare le cose difficili da realizzare.
114
And often as human beings, we get a bit of a complex about when something's difficult, you feel accomplished by being able to do the difficult thing.
E spesso, in quanto esseri umani, sviluppiamo una sorta di complesso riguardo alle cose difficili: ti senti realizzato quando riesci a fare qualcosa di complicato.
115
However, if we want to scale as an industry, what do we need to be able to do?
116
Share what we know.
117
If something's difficult to do, it does not make you good.
118
It makes it hard to be good.
119
If something's easy to do, it does not make it bad.
120
It makes it easy to be good.
121
And in an industry where we're trying to find the results, not a system, We need to figure out the easiest way to consistently produce the best results
122
And so what we're doing here is we're going to present the idea of a system of thinking
123
So the DFS formula is a system of decision making because reality is what is precision cutting?
124
Precision cutting is not a fucking process.
125
It's not a system.
126
There is no system in the world that is precision cutting Precision cutting is a result Okay,
127
and traditionally you'll see people very visual hair cutters super talented
128
Look like they haven't got a fucking clue what they're doing
129
and then it turns out amazingly
130
and then you'll have people super super technical Look fucking beautiful cutting hair
131
and it looks like shit at the end and vice versa.
132
So it's not a one-size-fits-all But what is precision cutting precision cutting is a result?
133
How do you get to the best results consistently?
134
Making the right decisions consistently Okay, technique is only 20% of precision cutting having good technique.
135
You need it.
136
You should But it's only 20% you have to make the right decisions as you go
137
So what we focus on is breaking a system down so we can make the correct decisions, okay?
138
I've done half this haircut, but I've left the other half completely undone So I can start
139
so I can go through with you in the short time we have the entire haircut that we'll go through
140
So when we look to break down hair what we look to do first is isolate it into
141
What goes out more towards the sides as opposed to what grows into the top obviously.
142
Now sectioning again a bit of a touchy subject for a lot of people but sectioning does not make your haircuts good.
143
Sectioning will never guarantee you a good haircut.
144
Sectioning is about physically isolating one area away from another so you can focus on one better.
145
Okay now what we're looking at here is we're looking at breaking the hair down into digestible chunks
146
but most of all we want to understand how do we understand shape
147
because shape is something that is a little bit misunderstood
148
because shape is not something you can ever put on heads
149
you will never ever ever in your life put a triangle
150
or a square or a circle on someone's head you are only ever cutting a line okay
151
and it is the line that gives the illusion of shape
152
so how can we make shape easy to digest
153
but also how can we make shape easy for the customer to be able to communicate to us
154
so all I'm doing is ever cutting a line in any
155
haircut ever we have two primary lines we have to focus on the horizontal line
156
and the vertical line and all that means is
157
if I look at this cone
158
because remember angles graduation layers they're not tangible assets I cannot see them
159
and measure them right you might say I'm pulling at 45 degrees
160
but how the fuck do you know what 45 degrees looks like you know an approximation I'm not not denying that.
161
However, it's hard to literally guarantee.
162
So my comb is a visual tangible asset I can look at
163
and shape is simply the difference in length from the top of the comb and the bottom of the comb.
164
Because as soon as the length changes on one end of the comb, the shape changes.
165
So when it comes to my customer and helping me to understand shape, what do I need to do?
166
I need to talk to my customer about their three key length points.
167
Because shape without suitability is shit all right literally
168
if you create the wrong shape for the wrong person's head
169
it won't give you the vision you want you need to understand of the suitability of the shape
170
so asking and understanding your customer the length points here here
171
and here everybody has three key length points
172
and customers know length customers don't know shape they don't know graduation they don't know layers
173
and half the time neither do the barbers but everybody knows length why
174
because you have visual length which is your external length
175
that you can see
176
and then you have feel length the length you can feel through the middle right and
177
when it comes to internal versus external externally is just simply
178
the hair at the perimeter of any area you're working on internal is the hair inside the perimeter
179
so if I can ask my customer do you want this long
180
or short and they say short and then they say do you want this longer
181
or shorter do you want to feel like you have a
182
hair to run your hands through yes okay longer well it's
183
a graduation it has to be there is no negotiating
184
that has to be a graduation because like he wants it shorter
185
and longer then what about if he says I want this longer
186
and this longer it's square what about he says I want this shorter
187
and this longer layers if I want short and short it's round and
188
so we can literally identify whatever shape we need by never
189
ever ever even talking about shape ever in our life
190
because you don't even need to understand shape we have to cut shape should you learn shape
191
and grow with it in as you grow in your career yes of course
192
but to be able to cut it we need to mix together visual
193
and technical hair cutting technical to give us the precision visual to give us the logic
194
and the actual suitability for the client and so what our system is going to be about is about breaking
195
horizontal and vertical lines into two.
196
Normally you would control them both at the same time.
197
For example when you follow a traveling guide the amount you over direct
198
or don't over direct the hair is going to influence the line this way
199
because if you over direct the hair back it's gonna make it longer at the back.
200
However at the same time you're using the angle of your fingers to control the vertical.
201
So that is gonna leave you very much open to human error
202
because you just want to control too much at once and the biggest mistake in hair cutting is accidental over direction.
203
The amount of times I see people have to do a full scissor cut
204
and have to scissor over comb the fuck out of it afterwards to make it look good
205
because there's pockets of white everywhere because you're accidentally over directing the hair too much
206
because you're not fully in control of horizontal and vertical.
207
So we're gonna split them in two.
208
So the first thing we're gonna look at is what is the horizontal shape I need here and
209
so the base that was existing I kind of liked right
210
so at the bottom of this line I know I want
211
to keep this longer through the haircut his initial cut
212
that came in look how heavy it is it's pretty much a one length okay
213
which means it's all gonna fall heavy so
214
if we want to create a bit more of a flow
215
we need to reduce some of the weight internally however he
216
still wants to have a lot of hair to run his hands through
217
so he still needs this longer so what does
218
that tell us it tells us not to layer it tells us a square layer vertically square
219
because we want to create this shorter keep that longer and keep
220
that longer okay now horizontally though typically you would follow the
221
recipe of horizontally square vertically square to do a square layer
222
but what happens every time you do a square layer at the end
223
go point cut the corners
224
if you're consistently cutting out the corner you put in it means you're consistently making the wrong decision about putting
225
that corner in the first place
226
so you need more freedom of choice you need to be
227
able to choose the horizontal shape here as well as here
228
so what I'm gonna look to do is I'm gonna create
229
a rounder horizontal shape through the top a square a horizontal shape through the base
230
so I keep the flare and then I'm want to make sure
231
that the same length
232
so how I started this haircut was I put my comb on the square point of the head section under
233
and obviously I've cut the one side
234
but what I did was I took a subsection just to be precise pulled this out pulled out my base
235
and what I want to do there is make sure
236
that these square so I pull it out get the base pull
237
that out square pull that out square once I can see
238
that they're level cut use that to cut the rest of this
239
and because I need to build some weight at the crown
240
because the shape I'm working on is square
241
or below for now I'm gonna pull this down to here
242
and cut and all All I'm gonna do is then at the top of this section,
243
at the parietal ridge, because the parietal ridge on this haircut is the top of the sides and bottom of the top,
244
I'm gonna go through and I'm gonna create my horizontally round shape.
245
And what's that gonna give me?
246
This horizontally round shape through here is then gonna give me an appropriate guide all the way around the top.
247
And so what I'm doing here is front loading the work
248
so that I now have already checked through all of the horizontal shape.
249
So now all I have to do is take a section, cut it, leave it behind.
250
I don't ever have to follow a traveling guide ever.
251
Because if I am going to over direct, so for example, if I wanted a square corner, I would have pulled this back square and cut that square first.
252
So then, if I've cut this square, every time I take my vertical sections, this guide and section, the whole section would be longer.
253
But for this haircut, what I need is the flare here, but I don't need a band of weight here.
254
Whereas a lot of people would just, I've got to cut it square, so you cut everything square, and then you get a whole band of weight here.
255
I need the flare without the weight.
256
So instead of leaving long hair and then point cutting it, I'm gonna actually take that corner out where I don't need it.
257
And the beauty in what we do is, You can put that system into any piece of hair cutting.
258
A section as big or as small as you want, because all the DFS formula is, is prepare, horizontal shape, vertical shape.
259
That is at a high level all we're doing.
260
Simple, easy hair cutting.
261
And then it doesn't matter what style you're doing, what type of barber you are, if you want to use flip over comb, scissor over comb, your precision cutting, whatever the fuck you want to do.
262
It's just lines.
263
All hair cutting is, is lines.
264
And if you can start to see and visualize the line, you're a lot more accountable because you always have this to go off of.
265
So for example, now, when I'm going to go through and create my square shape,
266
all I have to realistically do is use my comb to go straight off of the head.
267
And my comb can be my shape.
268
So I'm going to put this in.
269
And all I have to do, comb goes in on the square point of the head now the importance of this
270
if I put the comb in and I pull square to me
271
if I pull square to me what's gonna happen then
272
if his head moves my shape moves whereas he could put
273
his head here as long as I put the comb on
274
on the square point of the head all I got to do is pull out straight from there
275
and there's my guide because people's biggest problem is
276
that they'll do this and then they'll pick up here
277
but like there's supposed to be a point here
278
because you created the weight first and
279
if you were fading anything above the parietal you would do
280
when you do the top so same goes my scissor cutting
281
and we're all using the same exact system to cut the hair
282
and that's the beauty in it
283
because it is simply again it can look online like we're doing a certain thing okay
284
and the fact that we use a lot of horizontal cutting I think sometimes makes people get confused
285
but the thing you have to ask yourself is horizontal cutting
286
when you look at it from a scissor cutting point of view looks like block graduation
287
when I'm doing this it looks like block graduation
288
but block graduation is a technique used to solely build weight
289
because you pull everything down not because you cut like this
290
because when you think about scissor over comb
291
and clip over comb what do you use them for you use the provercomer scissor overcom to blend
292
and what is blending blending is balancing weight removing weight
293
so holding hair this way does not build weight it's about the elevation you choose
294
when you build that way and
295
so all we're doing is we're using horizontal lines to make our vertical lines easier
296
and doing them separately so that we actually are look more accountable to it
297
so all I got to do now is comb
298
that completely out the way and then move on to my next section
299
so I don't need to take any of my section with
300
me all I got to do is move around the head
301
meaning I can actually move around the head in complete combs widths
302
because if I pull out now I take that section pull straight out
303
can we see that pull straight out there's my guide
304
cook and the comb is creating the line
305
and that's why I can always be accountable to the shape I want to create
306
because the comb itself can test my line
307
if I put my fingers in
308
and the comb is doing a different line than I wanted I can see it before it happens
309
so for example if I was pulling out now my fingers were doing this
310
and I put my fit
311
and I put my comb in like this I could see clearly that's not the right line
312
so I can fix it because I know
313
if I keep going like this I'm gonna create the wrong shape
314
so now once we've done that section what can we do we literally comb the entire thing straight over
315
because we don't need any of it saving you time it's easy
316
and most importantly it's shareable okay this is something you could go back
317
and we do it time and time again you can go back
318
and teach a beginner
319
and in the matter of days you can get them to understand how hair cutting works
320
and that's the biggest difference most people understand how to do haircuts
321
but they don't understand how hair cutting works and what
322
that means is you lack the choices in adaptability and control
323
because control is here not here yeah an element of control is in your fingers
324
but the real control is here okay and so
325
if you're not fully aware and understanding hair itself
326
and what you're actually cutting you won't cut the hair the way you want to
327
so I'm gonna take these sections and and I keep them going round until I get to the ear.
328
Now, I actually separated the hair at the ear purely because when he first sat down, obviously his hair's quite long,
329
and I wanted to isolate the hair that was at the base behind the ear, away from the hair that was at the base in front of the ear.
330
However, if his hair was a little bit shorter, I probably wouldn't have isolated that because I'm doing the same vertical shape the whole way around.
331
I'm just working square.
332
so I'm gonna keep going up until I get to the ears
333
and then once I get to the ears then I'm gonna come
334
and I'm gonna connect the front
335
so again one key thing too is my foot positioning my
336
feet do the movement okay a lot of time people will try
337
and bend their hands whereas if you're trying to move your hands you're always moving them into a natural position.
338
For me what I always like to do is keep my foot position in control of my fingers
339
because if I move my feet my fingers move.
340
I don't move my hands I just move my feet so
341
that way I can be a little bit more automated in regards to like
342
when I'm like graduating
343
or square like it's about standing in the right place as opposed to having to pull to an angle
344
because pulling to an angle is always hard
345
and the beauty of it of this too is if you are graduating the angle of graduation is already predetermined
346
because you predetermine it by asking the client how short you
347
want it here how long do you want it here do
348
you want to have hair to run your hands through
349
and it be heavy or do you want it to be softer
350
and you can literally choose the third the highest point of the graduation cut
351
that along so then
352
when you do graduate your angle is is non-negotiable you have to join dot to dot
353
so this will be my last section in front of the ear
354
and then I'm going to go through to connecting from the front to the back.
355
Now this is easy because using the formula, what are we going to do?
356
All we're going to do is think, what does it do horizontally before we think about what it does vertically?
357
So all we're going to do now is go, OK, we've cut the back.
358
The entire of the back's cut.
359
How do we go through and connect the front?
360
Well, all we're going to look at doing is following that guide through.
361
So we're going to go level with the parietal ridge again, and we're going to go all the way through.
362
And all I'm going to do is follow my guide,
363
which is there, and follow that through.
364
And just follow that all the way through to the front, following the natural shape of the head, So keeping a rounder shape.
365
And then because I'm working square, all I'll do, obviously it's been disconnected previously.
366
I didn't do the disconnection, but it had been previously disconnected, so I'm just gonna cut from my guide down.
367
And so every time I'm just following that guide.
368
preset in and being in control of the horizontal shape
369
and then looking at your vertical so you're never having to then go back
370
and spend time cross-checking
371
because what's the purpose of cross-checking the purpose of cross-checking is
372
you've only controlled hair with your fingers vertically okay that's the main purpose of cross-checking
373
because if you've only controlled hair with your fingers vertically you have to check it horizontally
374
because you've never even looked at what it looks like horizontally.
375
Whereas the first thing we do is control the entire horizontal.
376
So because I then take everything from the horizontal down and leave it behind, everything is already solid to that connection of horizontal lines.
377
It doesn't mean that I won't ever go back and refine and check things through, of course I will.
378
However, I don't have to spend time or waste time literally cross-checking hair
379
because again another big mistake in hair cutting is
380
when people cross check because what they do is they cut hair out that they actually wanted in.
381
They'll just chop corners because they start following this as opposed to understanding this.
382
Because you pick it up you check it through you see a corner
383
but you meant that corner to be there because white's not always bad.
384
In barbering we often think that all white is bad but white sometimes can be really good.
385
And this goes as well into what I'm about to do next
386
which is connect the top to the sides
387
so in connecting the top to the sides all I have to do is control the horizontal fall of the hair
388
control the horizontal shape and give potential for the vertical the same way
389
so the horizontal fall is going to be controlled by how heavy this sits on here
390
so how we elevate this connection is going to influence how
391
heavy it is the length difference from here to here is about how long it's going to be
392
so So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna section around the middle of where I set my guide initially,
393
pull that through, and all I have to do is connect that to what's underneath.
394
Now, if I wanted it rounder, I would've pulled up higher.
395
If I wanted it heavier, I'd've pulled down lower.
396
Because just because I'm holding the hair horizontally does not mean that I'm building excess weight
397
So now I have my length here
398
I'm going to maintain the length at the front
399
so we can see previously he had like a crop kind of one forward
400
So the length at the front I'm going to pretty much maintain
401
So I'm going to use a lower elevation now at the very front.
402
I'm going to pull all the way down and use a lower elevation.
403
You said we got five minutes.
404
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go through
405
and all I'm gonna do is join that dart to
406
that dart and you can see my shape is square without having to decide the shape.
407
So I don't need to choose shape, the shape chooses itself based on the length points for the client because the client will know what length they want things.
408
They won't know what shape.
409
Everywhere on the head's been cut now, the only place that hasn't been cut is here.
410
So what I'm gonna do is go through the center,
411
pick up the middle, point, point, take it off.
412
Because that's my guide from the sides.
413
So what I would do is go through,
414
cut that off, and then work from there and work back.
415
And so that is in a nutshell what we do.
416
Super simple, super easy to do.
417
Like nothing complicated.
418
However, the level of understanding and control
419
and decision making builds a higher level of precision because not only are you being precise technically,
420
you're actually being precise in regards to what you're doing for the customer.
421
Because you're going to be cutting the hair for what the customer wants based on the length points that they want.
422
And I know a lot of times when we do like stage shows, I don't know what you guys can tell, I'm not really a show person.
423
I'm not really a showman.
424
I don't like, I mean props to people who do, but I don't really like doing that.
425
For me, I just teach and I educate.
426
So when I'm on stage, even though I'm on stage and it's a show, I still just want to focus on teaching because for me, that's where the real value is at because what can we take back and what can we share?
427
You know, and working on a system where it's so simple and easy that the reality is in one 45 minute slot,
428
you could take back something that you could go teach to a beginner, they could immediately start to do that actually will help them to understand hair better and cut hair better,
429
for me that's where the true growth of the industry comes in because at the end of the day, I always think no matter how good education is, and it is phenomenal, at the end of the day,
430
it's the next generation of barbers that we have to be able to raise.
431
We have to be able to bring them through because those are the product of what we do.
432
And so if we're not building them up to the point where they can scale the industry, the industry won't continue to scale beyond what we've got it to.
433
And so we have to come together to be able to utilize
434
a system of hair cutting that's going to maintain the barbershop environment, yet give the level of precision and detail people are looking for nowadays.
435
So once I get this out of the way, in terms of once I finish these last few sections, all I'll be left to do is just because I'm only going to do curtain bangs too,
436
I would honestly mostly let these air dry.
437
Like for myself, I always let my hair air dry, because that's how it looks best and looks the most naturally wet.
438
So all I'm going to do is comb that into shape, and that'll be my finished product.
439
Again, for me, I like to make sure as much as I can, we give as much value as we can, even in the amount of time that we've got.
440
For those of you who were in the look and learn, I really appreciate you guys' time, and I appreciate you guys' patience listening, especially with the stuff we talked about at the beginning, because I really do mean it.
441
At the end of the day, the people that you might look at and might aspire to be like in some way,
442
they don't get into the positions they get into purely based on talent, okay?
443
Nobody ever gets into those positions purely based on talent.
444
They get into those positions because of what they do with their talent, but also most importantly what they do outside of it.
445
Okay?
446
The story I'm going to leave you with is a couple of quick stories, so give me two seconds.
447
But the story I'm going to leave you with is an important story based on understanding how to do more.
448
And it's about, work with me on this one because it's a bit weird, but it's about the British cycling team, right?
449
The British cycling team were terrible and they lost event after event after event after event.
450
And so they hired a new coach.
451
And when the new coach came in, at first he started training legs, he started making them squat, he started making them run, he started making them do all the shit that you would do to make you cycle faster.
452
And they didn't do anything, they didn't improve one bit.
453
And then what he started to do is he started to research the best beds to sleep on, he started to research the best clothes to wear,
454
the best diet, the best everything else that no one else focused on.
455
And that same year, they won the Tour de France.
456
That same year, they won gold medal after gold medal after gold medal after gold medal.
457
That is what made them win.
458
Focusing on everything else is what will make you win.
459
Focusing solely on getting good at cutting hair will make you good.
460
But if you really want to go win, achieve those dreams, whatever those dreams are.
461
And those dreams should be based around you.
462
What do you want to achieve?
463
What do you want to achieve for your family?
464
But if you want to go do them, go figure out how to do more than everyone else, not be better than everyone else.
465
Thank you, guys.
466
Thank you, Josh.
467
Amazing.
468
Thank you very much.
469
Words of wisdom there.
470
I just want to just give you a chance for your team just to just debrief
471
and then we're going to clear the stage for our next set of guys.
472
So just debrief what you've done.
473
100% so is this on?
474
Yeah.
475
So what I'm doing right now is I'm literally just finishing up the taper on the left side.
476
I prepped it on the right side beforehand and I cut a square shape through the top.
477
Now, what Josh was saying about always thinking about your external line, I set in my shape horizontally through the parietal ridge.
478
All right, that was my guide.
479
And at the base, I left it natural because I am going to edge this in.
480
Once I followed the head's natural shape around the parietal ridge, I then connected my zones three and four to zones one and two.
481
One and two being the sides, three and four being above the parietal ridge.
482
I connected that around the back using a round shape towards the front,
483
kept it triangular because I wanted to maintain weight because I do plan on drying this into a fringe, a very big fringe of course.
484
And when I went into the sides, again, triangular from the ears forward because I wanted to build up this external shape, okay?
485
Awesome.
486
So Tony, just your last words before we get our next artist on.
487
Thank you, Chris.
488
So I pretty much finished my full scissor cut, bar a bit of styling and finishing.
489
but I want to thank you guys for taking the time
490
to watch us today I know it's been a long day
491
and everybody's tired but we would also like to announce that there's a world exclusive just for this Barber event that myself,
492
Josh Opie and Johnny Barber of Barber Barber are going to collaborate
493
and create an academy together which is two styles colliding
494
which is going to really shake up the industry two polar opposites
495
traditional barbering meets modern contemporary we're going to launch it courses
496
will be live within the next six to eight months
497
and we really hope that he's back in and supported
498
because it's going to be legacy industry disrupting to say the least amazing guys
499
so what I want you guys to do is
500
if you really want to know more they have a stand right at the back of the auditorium
501
so check these guys out guys we just need to wrap it up
502
because we are running a little bit late
503
but just final words release your models
504
and please feel free to go to the back talk to these guys
505
because again the formula is amazing the work is amazing I don't
506
if you follow Josh on Instagram phenomenal work
507
but again look the final words guys
508
and we'll just just wrap it up thank you
509
so much Josh anything to watch honestly mostly just thank you
510
I think for me one thing I think as someone like
511
and anyone who's on stage or as an educator can probably vouch for it
512
but and I said it in the look and learn too
513
but these events especially as an educator people always don't realize
514
sometimes how like you guys you guys are like people who motivate us
515
because I think sometimes people look at people on stage as the motivation
516
but like for me you guys are the motivation
517
because without you guys being here be willing to invest in yourself
518
and willing to grow and give it less energy it'd be very hard to be a a good educator.
519
So for me, I'm hoping you took something from it, even if it was small.
520
I apologize.
521
I'm very intent because I talk a lot.
522
But I hope you took something good from it.
523
And even if it's just a different perspective.
524
But mostly I just want to say thank you and let's have a great day.
525
Thank you guys.
526
Give Josh a round of applause and the team.
