1
I'm sorry.
2
Our side issue and that is the issue of the Greens.
3
Thankfully, we also have gatherings like this one where we get a lot of what we need as human beings, which is dopamine, but we get it in a form that our brain can actually process.
4
So today we're going to talk about offline dopamine
5
and why it's important for you and I to consider this as a source of everything that we do in life.
6
Yes, right.
7
Yeah.
8
Alright, so dopamine.
9
What is dopamine?
10
Dopamine is an influential neurotransmitter.
11
It plays a central role in motivation, focus, learning, movement, and emotional regulation.
12
In other words, we cannot escape it.
13
I know a lot of you have heard the term and, you know, the media says we are dopamine, dopamine, dopamine.
14
It's bad, bad for you, too much dopamine.
15
And yes, we are currently overstimulated.
16
Just before coming here, you probably heard the news.
17
You got a few pints on your phone.
18
You heard another story about airlines shutting down or oil or whatever it is.
19
So yes, you are overstimulated.
20
And recently for my newsletter, I did a deep dive on what is called smartphone dementia clinics.
21
So in Asia, they're setting up tech rehab centers for people who are overstimulated
22
and giving them time to actually process once again.
23
And this is happening with younger populations mostly, but some adults as well, which essentially means that we have a problem.
24
And most likely the problem is found in your pocket.
25
So we carry dopamine triggering devices, our smartphones, laptops, tablets, smart watches,
26
whatever it is, because we have adapted to a convenience driven lifestyle.
27
And I will show you how it used to be back in the day.
28
We used to have a lot of things with us.
29
So whether it was a camera, an MP3 player, your phone, maybe a GPS handheld or in your car.
30
and you used to have a lot of stuff and that was not convenient at all.
31
Now we have one thing that allows us to do all of these things.
32
And those things are important.
33
However, they may be causing secondary effects, which means overstimulation lives.
34
So how to fix it?
35
Well, we need a plan for periodic breaks for our brain.
36
The smartphone, although I personally don't like it, I don't like the culture around it.
37
I advocate against it, I use a dumb phone, yada, yada, yada.
38
But when we really think about it, the device itself is not evil.
39
But the device is a portal that allows our predatory actors, meaning social media, work, news, advertising, video, our newest favorite two-letter word,
40
AI, to monopolize our attention and break down our system's regulatory barriers.
41
This is where we find articles on the internet about how AI is being sycophantic
42
and telling you everything you want to hear and giving you more stimulation and more news and everything.
43
So you never get a break because you always have this device with you.
44
So what we need is periodic breaks because our brains developed in a timeline
45
that did not have all of these devices with us at
46
all times they develop in a timeline where we maybe went
47
to work maybe you take a break go to the park
48
or go for lunch and you had natural sources of dopamine
49
and breaks in in your every day now we don't have
50
that therefore what you need is number one
51
or my recommendations are an offline home
52
so to reduce over stimulation they create created by smartphones you need something
53
that you do offline every
54
so often walking reading writing i hear there's a creative meetup about
55
that on monday you know but anything
56
that allows you your brain to just not think about the
57
latest craze well helping processing time right just go on a walk around your neighborhood without your smartphone
58
that will allow you to process whatever is happening in your job
59
or in your life so
60
if you need a mega list of course reddit has created one
61
and crowdsourced one
62
and the sub digital minimalism one of my favorite subreddits it
63
allows you to thereby creativity social nature mental well-being whatever it is
64
and we have new products for those of you
65
that are outdoorsy i don't know if you saw them before
66
and i'm ready to invest in that job so
67
so again you have a lot of things
68
that the world allows another thing is you can take a weekend offline dedicating a period of time each day
69
or during the weekend it's another helpful tool in the battle
70
again is digital distraction you got a music player you got
71
a camera yes it is not going to be as convenient as the all-powerful smartphone
72
that allows your brain to segment and to associate differently with what you're doing
73
and what your brain is actually trying to process.
74
Finally, prioritize human and a world where we are overstimulated with AI,
75
overstimulated by the news, overstimulated with every single little thing that attracts our attention.
76
We can do things.
77
You're doing one right now.
78
You're getting
79
tons of dopamine and your brain is like oh my gosh
80
so much new information about egypt and hieroglyphs and about the prices
81
and energy all of the presentations that we saw today our brains love
82
that but we also get a little break with claps to process everything
83
and then eventually you get a break in the middle
84
and you so the company is a great place for this another plug
85
but let's go to comedy works
86
or good luck club uh weatherman cafe they don't have wi-fi there stela's coffee house also does not provide wi-fi
87
so you actually have to talk to people um the number of performing arts center pigeon is a bar
88
that you can play chess with other people and different levels
89
so you don't have to be an expert you can learn
90
anything malinja audio bar has a pretty phone-free experience where you go you get dinner
91
and you get to listen to a record all together
92
so prioritize human spaces that allow you to process and engage with other human beings in a way that matters to you.
93
And as always, four books that can help you understand this problem, understand what's happening in the world,
94
and maybe take some steps to create more offline in your everyday life.
95
Thank you.
96
Thank you.
