Pratica di Shadowing: What they got right! iPhone Duo - Impara a parlare inglese con i video

2
I've been waiting to sit in this chair and talk about an Apple foldable since like 2019.
3
That's when Samsung shipped the first Galaxy Fold and Apple's keynote landed seven years later.
4
I thought it was gonna be to the day, but it was to the week that that phone came out.
5
Seven years of me buying every foldable that's come out in the United States, it's the ones that open like a book,
6
loving every one of them and knowing every single one of them had something that was wrong with it.
7
Most people are gonna walk to an Apple store
8
and see the Duo and think that's like the first foldable in the world.
9
And Apple's gonna get a lot of credit for stuff that like, you know, other people had the idea first.
10
But credit's gotta go where it goes and we wouldn't be here without Samsung.
11
All right, so when Apple finally, I guess when John Turnus walked out on stage and the iPhone Duo came out,
12
I was braced for disappointment because I had it hyped up so much.
13
But something else happened that I wasn't expecting.
14
The Duo has like a lot working against it.
15
Starts at just under $2,000.
16
It's losing kind of flagship iPhone features.
17
The crease is still there, but all of that, I will still be up in the morning, ordering one of the things as fast as I can to get any version that's gonna be available
18
because supply is gonna be pretty thin.
19
But there's a lot more nuanced about the phone than just like it folds and there's some cool software.
20
And I've done the research and I sort of have a lot of opinions here
21
on what they're going to do with the Duo.
22
Start the shape, because this is the part that pretty much everybody who's had a Z Fold that's been testing for weeks.
23
Clothes, it's a passport, with a 5.4 inch screen on the front.
24
And the front screen, it's odd looking, it's asymmetrical.
25
It's odd looking on purpose.
26
The two corners on the hinge side are kind of squared off, and the two on the outer edge are rounded.
27
So the display is not symmetrical.
28
It's the first iPhone screen in years that kind of doesn't match its own reflection.
29
First time you see it, I think it probably reads like a mistake.
30
It's not.
31
Apple decided they'd rather have a screen
32
that runs to the fold rather than one of the four matching corners in the bezel to hide the hardware.
33
I've kind of gone back and forth on it.
34
In photos, it bugs me in the hands.
35
I don't think it's gonna bother anybody at all.
36
It should also give you a visual cue of which side of the phone you're holding, you know, when you're having it in your hand, so I don't have it kind of upside down trying to figure out where that Touch ID button is.
37
When you open it up, iPad mini-ish, 7.6 inches at roughly four by three.
38
Both screens share the same aspect ratio, which is a giant deal.
39
So when you unfold it, the app doesn't just get bigger, it actually rearranged itself.
40
This is clearly a two-handed device.
41
But that's true for pretty much every book style foldable, and it's true here.
42
The Duo runs iOS.
43
It does not run iPadOS.
44
Apple install base makes a big screen layout worth the developers afternoon,
45
and it means this phone gets better in sort of year two instead of staying exactly the same
46
that was shipped in the box.
47
And the big names already lined up for day one before you would take this thing out of the box.
48
And that was the moment in the keynote where I stopped being nervous about what it could be
49
and started being really excited because Apple's own stuff looks so good.
50
When you open it, the app doesn't sort of reload or blink.
51
It kind of slides up from the screen to the big one and the control stays right where your thumb was.
52
You can do all kinds of obviously UI stuff.
53
Essentially, it's like two phones side by side.
54
So Split View puts two apps side by side on an
55
iPhone for the first time ever to Safari windows for comparison shopping, saved pairs, all that there.
56
Made it really easy to switch and multitask.
57
Obviously Samsung did stuff like that for years, but it's cool to see it finally get perfected.
58
And I think finally get developer support for all kinds of features that it's going to be.
59
There is a catch though, and I do want to flag it.
60
So nobody's surprised in October, Everything you know about where things live on an iPhone move completely.
61
The dock, if I'm gonna call it a dock, it's on the right edge.
62
Status bar is on the right edge.
63
Your battery, your wifi, your signal, all stacked vertically in a column.
64
I don't know how it's gonna handle two sims either, but it looks like this.
65
You can see the information, it's weird.
66
Dynamic Island runs sideways down that same strip, and apps like messages, whole conversation list gets pushed over, so the strip has kind of room on the side.
67
And it does eat real estate, So on a screen you paid two grand for, know that.
68
The dock also holds four apps and only four.
69
Do not try to add a fifth.
70
Even the keyboard changes too.
71
It splits down the middle when you're holding it open so your thumbs can reach.
72
The volume buttons move too.
73
They're on the top edge now, which looks strange to realize it means up is always to the right and down is always to the left, no matter how you're holding the thing.
74
None of this is bad, but 18 years of muscle memory tells me the clock is on the top left and the battery's on the top right.
75
And for the first few weeks, I'm gonna reach for the status bar that ain't there.
76
It's a new phone the way the original iPhone X was a new phone.
77
You're gonna relearn it.
78
And once you've relearned it, this is the part I keep replaying.
79
Set the Duo down half open and it goes to standby on either screen.
80
And it doesn't need to be on the charger.
81
Prop it up and it'll shoot a time-lapse with no tripod, hold it part way and the content slides away from the crease where the taps don't register from the bottom half, turns into controls like a tiny laptop.
82
The speakers retune themselves, sort of depending on how far apart things are.
83
And I thought that was really cool too.
84
When you sort of hold it open like a little laptop, you can get controls.
85
The Netflix example I thought was incredibly cool.
86
You flip it open, open it, and you have full controls there.
87
But there's the little things that you saw developer support that again, you didn't see for Android.
88
So last year we launched a new channel focused on TVs in home theater called The Viewing Angle.
89
A brand new channel with zero kind of built-in audience and the entire marketing plan was on me posting links, talking about it, and just hoping.
90
And in retrospect, that wasn't a strategy, that was more of like a prayer.
91
It's been almost 18 years of running Technobuffalo and JFL Network, three channels, an incredible team,
92
and sort of nobody whose job it is is to do marketing for the actual business.
93
It always ends up on me usually at 11 to 3 in the morning.
94
Done, not great, or manically.
95
So I did try Holo.
96
It's an AI marketing department.
97
Literally paste in your website URL, it reads it, learns about your brand and how you talk,
98
and actually will set a 30-day target and then build a plan across everything.
99
So social, ads, email, and it doesn't stop at the plan.
100
It sort of makes real finished stuff too.
101
Real ads you can use, real posts you can post, real emails ready to go, and obviously you can tweak stuff if you want.
102
You can approve everything by hand or let it run on autopilot.
103
It's gonna track results for you daily and kind of adjust as it learns what's working.
104
One system, instead of five tabs, that is what sold me on it.
105
If you run a small business, you run a YouTube channel, you don't know how to do marketing, this solves it perfectly.
106
If you wanna check out Holo for yourself, use tryholo.ai.john, and if you use that coupon code, which is just John, J-O-N,
107
you can get up to 60% off.
108
The link is also in the description pinned in the comment down below.
109
All right, so back to the number.
110
5.2 millimeters open, 11.3 close, and 254 grams.
111
The Z Fold 8 is 4.5, 9.7, and 201 grams.
112
And Samsung ran an ad hours before the keynote calling it the world's lightest fold.
113
That is still true and fair enough.
114
Samsung earned that ad.
115
Apple lost both fights, same as closely designed to win, by a millimeter and by more than the weight of a AAA battery.
116
Here's what you get for that extra bulk in the hand though.
117
Feels like a sturdier phone.
118
There is no flex in the frame.
119
The Duo feels like something that I could maybe hand to my kids.
120
But that weight also bought you some stuff on the inside.
121
There's a battery on each side of the hinge and Apple's claiming 44 hours of video on the outer screen.
122
I believe it was 31 on the inner and like 24 on mixed use.
123
Those are Apple's numbers on pre-production units.
124
I will test every one of them, but if they are anywhere close, that is the best battery ever put in an iPhone, and it is driving two displays.
125
50% in 20 minutes on a cable, 30 on MagSafe, which thank goodness it has.
126
And MagSafe, I do want to sit on that for a second, because it's the moment that I exhaled.
127
Early dummy leaks showed no magnet ring on the back, and for weeks I was a one rumor.
128
I almost needed to be wrong.
129
In my soul, I knew they wouldn't charge $2,000 and not put MagSafe, but until I saw it on the spec sheet, I didn't want to believe it.
130
My whole tech life snaps on the back of my phone.
131
Carmel, charger by my bed, all of it works here.
132
Chi 2 II with a $79 case and $120 folio that both charge through.
133
53 grams, not a giant deal, but just no, with a little extra weight.
134
The crease is there.
135
A different story.
136
An Apple went in a way I don't think many people expected.
137
The inner display has a nano texture finish, similar to the matte treatment from Macs and studio displays.
138
So it looks closer to paper than glass.
139
With something bright on the screen, the crease tends to disappear.
140
I imagine that's why they went nanotexture.
141
With all of this stuff, there are some compromises.
142
And the Duo 2 has a big one.
143
Face ID is gone.
144
Touch ID is on the side button.
145
You can enroll a few fingers, and you can unlock with an Apple Watch.
146
I do not wear an Apple Watch.
147
It was almost a deal breaker.
148
So every time I want to get into this phone, I have to hold it a certain way and land a finger on that button.
149
And if my hands are full or I can't get my finger on that button, I can't unlock the phone.
150
And I find that really annoying.
151
I knew it was going to be a compromise.
152
There was no rumors at all of Face ID being here.
153
I know some people even prefer Touch ID, but I've gotten very used to face authentication.
154
I think that is a giant bummer.
155
I understand first gen is not going to have it.
156
It's not going to change it from buying the phone, but it's definitely going to diminish, I think my enjoyment from the device.
157
On the camera side
158
and this one was personal the zoom there are two cameras on the back the 48 megapixel main
159
and the same 48 megapixel ultra wide fusion camera from the 18 Pro.
160
You do get a 2x zoom but it's a crop from the main sensor and it tops out 10 times digital.
161
What I will say for the setup though is that it's probably the right two lenses.
162
The foldable only gets a pair the main plus ultrawide is probably the pair you want
163
and 4k 120 and dolby vision on the main camera is nothing to sneeze at
164
while we're on cameras though the one on the inside is hiding under the screen
165
and it probably is going to look at i imagine it's going to be soft
166
and over sharpened kind of image every under display has produced
167
since the idea showed up uh apple's been mum though on megapixels
168
and specs on
169
that camera apple chose a clean screen mostly for facetime calls i probably will be fine
170
but anything you actually want to take though you're probably going to want to use the cameras on the back.
171
There are two giant things that Apple did right that Samsung isn't
172
and I say that with respect because Samsung's the whole reason this category exists.
173
The first, the duo is IP68 and that is huge.
174
Full dust and water resistance on a phone with a hinge.
175
Every Z-fold has been IP48 I believe which means it'll survive a dunk but Samsung won't promise anything about dust.
176
I think dust is what kills a lot of foldables.
177
It works its way into the hinge and the screen and sort of one day it just won't close flat.
178
Samsung never got there, Apple got there in the first try.
179
Second, Apple Pencil support is coming to the Duo.
180
Now the Fold used to have pen support, they killed it with the Fold 7.
181
That's awesome, it's not here now, I said it'll be coming by the end of the year, early next year.
182
That's huge, the fact that they got a digitizer layer on that display is awesome, so I think it's nice for people who care about a Pencil support
183
or using it more as a tablet to have that option.
184
Now I will say though, Apple's using the USB-C pencil, so no pressure sensitivity, kind of obvious, right?
185
All right, so the last big part of this equation is the money.
186
2,000 bucks for 256 gigs and up to $3,200 for two terabytes.
187
That's just over $83 a month on Apple's financing or at least through like Klarna, starting at 58 bucks.
188
That is a lot of money.
189
I did think it was gonna start over 2,500 just floating around, so I guess 1,900 bucks lands like a discount even though it's an absurd amount of money,
190
hence a hundred bucks more than the Z Fold 8, and $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro.
191
If you're interested in being a first gen, I don't know about beta tester, but you want to get a piece of it, pre-orders start October 16th, and the phones come out October 23rd.
192
And if you're sitting there wondering who asked for a $2,000 iPhone that folds, the answer might surprise you, it's China.
193
By most counts, China bought more foldables last year than the rest of the world combined.
194
And Apple wants those customers back.
195
And you and I are kind of just along for the ride here.
196
I'm excited about this phone.
197
I think it's gonna be a huge hit for Apple, but I've been wrong in the past, my wife will tell you.
198
But it's a big step for Apple one way or another.
199
And so if you don't have to have the Gen 1, I think things that could likely get added for Gen 2 include Zoom, potentially Face ID.
200
Those two things alone might be worth the wait.
201
And at the very least, when Gen 2 comes out, huge discounts on Gen 1.

  • "I've been waiting to sit in this chair and talk about...": Espressione per indicare l'ansia di discutere di un argomento.
  • "credit's gotta go where it goes": Significa che i meriti devono essere attribuiti a chi li ha guadagnati.
  • "stopped being nervous about what it could be": Esprime la transizione da preoccupazione a entusiasmo.

Concentrati su espressioni come "I was braced for disappointment" o "supply is gonna be pretty thin", dove il tono cambia per enfatizzare emozioni o dettagli.
