1
Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson where we're going to take some time to walk around in the great outdoors.
2
And I'm going to take some time to teach you a few English terms and phrases that we use.
3
And I just used the first one.
4
The first one is the phrase or the term, the great outdoors.
5
Right now I am in the great outdoors.
6
This is kind of a fun phrase that we use to talk about places like this.
7
As you can see, there are trees all around me.
8
You can see that there's a nice path.
9
You can see that the trees are also turning color.
10
And so I am out in nature.
11
I'm out in the great outdoors.
12
And it's kind of a fun term, I always think.
13
When you say the great outdoors, sorry, let me switch hands here for a sec.
14
When you say the great outdoors, it is great.
15
It's awesome.
16
It's fun.
17
It's cool to be out in nature.
18
It's fun to be in the great outdoors.
19
And then the second term or phrase I wanted to teach you is the phrase mother nature.
20
So we use mother nature when we talk about nature as if nature is a person.
21
Let's say for instance it was raining today.
22
I might say oh mother nature is angry today.
23
Let's say the sun is shining.
24
I might say, oh, mother nature is happy today.
25
And so the sun is shining.
26
So we sometimes refer to nature as mother nature, as if it is a person.
27
And if you're wondering, what about father?
28
What does he get if mother represents nature?
29
Well, we sometimes say father time.
30
So mother nature is about nature and father time is about time.
31
But I'll explain more about father time in another lesson.
32
And then also I'm out here because I enjoy the fresh air.
33
You can actually see the leaves moving in the breeze.
34
It's quite nice out here today.
35
So I'm enjoying the fresh air as opposed to if I was in the city.
36
If I was in the city there would probably be some pollution, the air would probably smell funny, but out here everything smells great,
37
out here there is a lot of fresh air.
38
We sometimes use this phrase when we're talking about our houses, sometimes we open our windows to get some fresh air.
39
So that's kind of another thing, another reason why you might come outside.
40
I'm sorry I had to move my camera around
41
because I didn't want to accidentally get those people on camera without their permission.
42
So fresh air, lots of fresh air.
43
We're coming up to a clearing here.
44
And that kind of reminds me of the phrase wide open spaces.
45
So one of the things that I really enjoy about being in the great outdoors is
46
that you have lots of trees and lots of beauty, but sometimes you also have wide open spaces like this one.
47
Kind of a cool place to hang out.
48
Maybe you want to bring your dog here as long as your dog is on a leash.
49
I actually think there's a dog at the top of
50
that little lookout and I wanted to show you that lookout
51
because someone asked in a live stream recently
52
if I had ever been to a lookout and we would call that a lookout.
53
I think people come to that lookout in this wide open space to do some bird watching.
54
So as we move along here I wanted to talk about the term the wilderness.
55
So the wilderness is a term we use to refer to a place where no one lives, a place where there are no houses,
56
but I wouldn't describe this area as the wilderness.
57
If you walked to the north or to the west, or if you walked south, or if you walked east,
58
you would very quickly find houses.
59
So this is not the wilderness.
60
When we talk about the wilderness, we're talking about a place where if you walked for several days in one direction,
61
you would still not find any any houses or any people living there.
62
So this is definitely not the wilderness, although it is beautiful, but it's not even really big enough to get lost in.
63
If you went into the trees, if you went down all the paths, it's actually pretty easy to find your way back out.
64
You wouldn't get lost very easily at all.
65
So you can pretend this is a wilderness, but it's really not.
66
It's just a small conservation area.
67
And you can actually, you probably can't hear it, but I can actually hear the cars on the highway to the north of here.
68
So not really the wilderness.
69
What it is though is a natural habitat.
70
So in English when we say something is a natural habitat
71
that would mean that certain types of animals live in that area.
72
So this is a natural habitat for these three types of birds.
73
The falcon, there's a hawk there, a kestrel.
74
You'll have to read these names.
75
I'm not a bird expert but this is their natural habitat.
76
That means, let's look again.
77
So that means that they live in this area.
78
By the way I live right here and I'm right here where this red dot is right now.
79
As you can see I live close to the Great Lakes, which is really cool because it's like living close to the ocean,
80
except it's not salt water.
81
So natural habitat.
82
This is a natural habitat, not for dogs, but this is a natural habitat for things like squirrels and raccoons.
83
And you can even use it to talk about the trees that are growing here.
84
So these are maple trees.
85
You can see the maple leaf right there.
86
It's actually getting a little dark out here.
87
I hope it's not going to rain.
88
I hope Mother Nature doesn't get angry at me while I'm out here.
89
But we refer to the animals and the trees as flora and fauna.
90
Now I've actually flipped that.
91
Flora refers to all of the plants.
92
So the trees and the bushes and all of those things we would call flora.
93
And then fauna refers to all of the animals, like the squirrels and the chipmunks and all of the different birds that live here.
94
There are a lot of different flora and fauna in this little forest area, so that's kind of cool.
95
So yes, flora refers to plants, fauna refers to all of the animals.
96
And then I wanted to talk about the elements.
97
So if you're wondering why I keep moving this around, my shoulders mostly healed from when I broke my collarbone,
98
but it still feels a little funny to carry the camera.
99
Anyways, I wanted to talk about the elements.
100
We use the term the elements to refer to things like the sun and rain.
101
When you are outside, you are in the elements.
102
It could snow, probably not today, it's not that cold, but it could snow, it could rain, there could be hail,
103
there could be wind, there could be lots of intense sunshine.
104
So when you are in the elements, it means you are outside and you are experiencing all of the things that
105
Mother Nature can throw at you, actually.
106
So I'll give you one last panning shot.
107
So I'm out here in nature, I am out here in the great outdoors, I'm experiencing mother nature and getting lots of fresh air.
108
I've been able to see some wide open spaces.
109
It kind of looks like the wilderness.
110
If you look over here, this looks a lot like the wilderness.
111
This is the natural habitat of several different kinds of animals like squirrels
112
and chipmunks and sparrows and those would all be fauna
113
and these trees are flora and I'm hoping
114
that as I'm out here in the elements
115
that my jacket is enough to keep me warm and to keep me happy as I'm out here in the great outdoors.
116
So anyways a little walk and talk English lesson today.
117
I hope you were able to learn some new English words
118
and phrases and I hope that at some point today you're able to spend some time in the great outdoors.
119
I actually think it's really important to get out in nature as often as you can.
120
We usually go for a hike once a week.
121
I wish I could go every day.
122
Maybe that's something I'll do in 10 years or so when I'm retired.
123
Anyways, thanks for watching.
124

125

126
127
I do enjoy reading them and I'll see you next week with another English lesson.
128
Bye.
129
Thank you.
