Hello.
2
Alright, alright, alright.
3
Hello.
4
So I really appreciate all of you for coming here today.
5
And I also am really appreciative of the fact that you guys still stay until the very end.
6
So let's applaud ourselves for that.
7
So I just want a quick show of hands.
8
How many of you guys know me.
9
So please raise your hand if you don't know me.
10
So every one of you don't know me?
11
Okay, TED Talk, over.
12
Okay, so I'm a teacher and I published my first book when I was 21.
13
And I graduated high school when I was 16.
14
And I did all of that while procrastinating.
15
I'm a chronic procrastinator.
16
And let me tell you the story of my experience with procrastination.
17
Procrastination means that you're postponing, you're delaying to work until much later when you actually have to do it.
18
So when I was still a student, I used to be a chemistry major.
19
And that means doing lots of chemistry problems days in and days out.
20
And for a normal chemistry major student, their workload may look something like this.
21
They would start off strong.
22
gradually increase their workload day in and day out, and then kick it up a really high notch in the final days when the assignment is reaching its deadline.
23
For me, my workload looks something like I'm going to go.
24
Well, I would not start until the very end.
25
But then came my city excellence student contest.
26
It was something that people have to prepare in advance for months.
27
And knowing the significance of this, for a 14 -year -old, I gave it my all.
28
And I knew it.
29
I knew I have to give it my all.
30
People start months in advance, right?
31
So I have a plan.
32
My plan was to start the chemical reactions slowly, and then once it incubates, and then when the results are there, I will do some serious work.
33
And then in the final sector, I would give it my all.
34
I would lock myself in.
35
The first few months, however, for me, came and went.
36
I had an awesome revised plan.
37
Well, but it was really strange.
38
It was a really cold winter in Ho Chi Minh City.
39
It was weird because like Ho Chi Minh City is always hot, you know?
40
And then it also came and went.
41
Until one day, I realized I had one week before the contest.
42
Whoa, I had to...
43
Well, it's now or nothing.
44
I gave it my all.
45
I studied for 14 hours per day, 7 days a week, for 1 week.
46
And then I studied for 14 hours per day, eat for 2 hours per day, and sleep for the remaining 8.
47
So I still am able to sleep for 8 hours per day, which was the only positive side.
48
And then 2 weeks later, I received a call from my school counselor.
49
She was like, "Tong, is this Tong?" I was like, "Yeah." "Am I in trouble?
50
You never call." She was like, "No, this time is serious." I was like, really?
51
She was like...
52
the contest.
53
It's the best one we've ever seen.
54
And I was like, Yeah, normal stuff.
55
She was like, You're valedictorian and being serious. That did not happen.
56
I just wanted to enjoy the moment where there was complete silence.
57
Everyone was, "Oh, this guy's on to something." Right?
58
I'm not that gifted, unfortunately.
59
For chemistry, you still have to put in the work.
60
Oh, that was me.
61
I ended up second -priced.
62
Not too bad.
63
It was decent work.
64
I'm not satisfied with it, though.
65
I still beat myself up to this very day.
66
And in that moment, I learned something at a very young age of 14.
67
I learned that procrastination is not about time.
68
It's about belief.
69
It's not about something in here.
70
It's about something up here in your cognitive processing brain.
71
I also learned that the gap between fear and belief was the place that we never get started.
72
We struggle before we ever start.
73
And that was when it hit for me.
74
I came to that realization and I, promised myself to never procrastinate it again.
75
That did not happen again.
76
Of course I procrastinate!
77
Everybody does!
78
Okay.
79
So when I was 16, my next big thing came up.
80
I transformed myself physically.
81
It was not something that happened in a bathroom, it was happening in front of my bathroom mirror.
82
So that was me.
83
That was me at 14, 13, and that was 16.
84
I used to be 110 kilograms and 250 pounds, or one fall from the elephant's weight for Americans.
85
Okay, so how did I lose it?
86
How did I lose?
87
How did I shred the weight?
88
So in the first few months?
89
No, not the first few months.
90
In the first week, I ran five miles per day.
91
So eight kilometers.
92
And then I also compiled it with a diet of only potatoes and water.
93
I lost 25 pounds or 10 kilos in the first week.
94
And I gained it all back several pieces later.
95
This time, being rebounded from that initial weight loss, I had to revise my eating plan.
96
I learned how to eat right, I learned how to exercise right, and I successfully kept the weight off.
97
That was my first realization of I know that I have the ability to achieve whatever I want in life.
98
Because, not whatever I want in life, but I know what was possible.
99
I was able to become much more confident because of my new appearance in my mind.
100
Next came my big twist in the academic journey.
101
I graduated high school at 16
102
and I had several years to play with in terms of what I wanted to do next.
103
I initially, being a chemistry major and all, I naturally pursue biomedical engineering as my field of interest.
104
However, I did not survive one semester.
105
If her grade was hanging by a thread, mine was bad.
106
I hated all the lab work.
107
And then I found something more interesting in Singapore.
108
I quickly flew from the US to Singapore to pursue my degree in commerce as well as my degree in marketing.
109
And that's me nowadays.
110
That was me back in college.
111
Now that everything is said and done, now that I've seen the consequence, the result of everything, I find I tell myself that every switch was not a failure.
112
I like to think that.
113
It was discovery.
114
Every detour gave me new coordinates and new goals.
115
Thank you.
116
Next was another transformation in my entrepreneurial journey.
117
I came back to Vietnam in 2022.
118
I started a learning center initially, and it was specializing in teaching students and prepping them for the university entrance exam.
119
Well, at first, students were flocking in.
120
I was low -key, had a good reputation online.
121
So students were flocking in.
122
In the first month we recorded 100 students enrolling.
123
And somehow the business miraculously fell.
124
You know why?
125
Because I was procrastinating on asking them for tuition fee.
126
Well, and also I only charge them for like 150 US dollars per entrance.
127
So that was another reason it miraculously fell.
128
My girlfriend at the time and Suez motivated me to redo it.
129
I started my business currently, Nha Eost.
130
And it's still living nowadays.
131
At first, I didn't believe in myself because I was just felt, right?
132
I had no money because of all the tuition, because of the procrastination.
133
I know I could write curriculums, could write textbooks for this field.
134
I could write books, curriculums, However, I didn't have the courage to do it.
135
She stood by me and we started the center together.
136
the realization of procrastination.
137
Now it's the science behind it.
138
So procrastination, it's a cognitive mechanism that your brain uses to regulate your emotion.
139
And it's a really effective strategy at that.
140
Procrastination is not about the lack of time or it's not about the laziness.
141
It's about fear.
142
It's fear of not being ready.
143
It's the fear of trying but then failing and starting but not succeeding at the very end.
144
So that's procrastination.
145
So, how do we deal with this?
146
And of course not by skipping school and not by doing chemistry for 14 hours per day, seven days a week.
147
Right?
148
Also, I encourage none of you guys to skip schools.
149
Okay, go to BVIS.
150
Still, go to school.
151
Okay, so back to my original point.
152
The nature of procrastination is just the conflict between the present self and the future self.
153
The present self It wants to remedy your emotion.
154
It wants to protect yourself from pain.
155
However, it directly conflicts with the future self because the future self wants you to achieve much more.
156
And the result is traumatic.
157
It's because avoiding a task improves mood only temporarily or not improve it at all.
158
And you end up in the long run stressing out.
159
And it leads to ultimately poorer performance, which is what really is recorded.
160
So how to deal with procrastination? Of course.
161
First of all, go to school.
162
Second of all, Task junking.
163
So what is task junking?
164
Task junking is, and I encourage all of you to try this, or at least tell your students about it, please.
165
So task junking is to break down a big task into smaller tasks, and to break down a big thing, big assignment into manageable steps.
166
Instead of doing this big assignment or doing this individual assignment, start on it.
167
I would encourage my students to first spend a 20 minute session doing the literature review.
168
After that, spend some time thinking about it, because that's really when the creativity is going to be done happens, and then ultimately submitting your paper.
169
much more manageable.
170
That was what my mom did to me when instead of saying, "Hey, be more considerate to other people." She said, "First of all, you need to greet everyone when you see, when you walk into the room.
171
After that, you sit down, you quietly go to your place and then sit down.
172
And third of all, be comfy." I So that's Whoa, that's not what.. okay, so that was chat chunky.
173
Next of all is choice architecture.
174
And this is by far the most effective of all.
175
Choice architecture just means that you architect your environment.
176
So what I do is I sometimes tell my girlfriend to lock me in a room with me
177
and only my computer or my...
178
I sometimes go really extreme typewriter.
179
And it works but don't try this at home, especially if you're a parent because that's a felony, I guess.
180
Don't do it if you're a parent.
181
Do it if you're over 18.
182
Okay, so that's choice architecture.
183
Or it just can be as simple as leave your phone in the other room.
184
All right.
185
Okay, that's choice architecture.
186
And third of all is timeboxing.
187
So this is by far the most commonly used among students.
188
This is the Pomodoro technique.
189
I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with it.
190
It's 25 minutes of doing the and what I personally do with myself is something called drop everything and.
191
So at one o 'clock in the afternoon I do what's called drop everything and drink creatine, which is a substance that improves cognitive function.
192
30 minutes later at 1 :30 I do something called drop everything and go to the gym.
193
And at 12am every day I do something called drop everything
194
and sleep regardless of the fact that I have not taken a shower or eat dinner, but I always advise you guys to eat dinner.
195
So that's what I do.
196
However, that's short -term mechanism.
197
What about long -term?
198
How can I mitigate this and ultimately be a better person?
199
Not struggle with procrastination as much.
200
So research shows, this research from Carleton University examined 120 participants,
201
have found that those that forgive themselves do better in the long run.
202
So the results have shown that students who forgive themselves
203
or feel less bad at the moment are less likely to procrastinate in the future.
204
So, Ultimately, what does this mean?
205
Forgiving ourselves and feeling compassion when you are in a bad place is really the critical thing.
206
We should admit that we feel bad, but you shouldn't be overly critical of ourselves.
207
And also, you're not the first person to procrastinate, and you're not the last person either.
208
And doing this can take the edge off the negative feelings,
209
and ultimately, it's easier for you to get back on track. with procrastination.
210
And thank you all for coming to my TED Talk.
