7
Yeah.
8
If you want to be successful in any organization, you first have to have a ticket to the dance.
9
Now by that, I mean that there are certain prerequisites that you have to meet.
10
These might be certain qualifications or capabilities or experiences.
11
Once you have your ticket to the dance, you have to work out how to differentiate yourself from everyone else.
12
What you'll notice as you go up through the ranks is that your peers are really smart too.
13
Increasingly so, the higher up you get.
14
At the top of virtually every organisation, being really smart is the norm.
15
it's no longer the differentiator that it might have been at lower levels.
16
Now of course, smart people rise up for a variety of reasons.
17
Some like to rely purely on their intellectual prowess.
18
Others focus on accumulating expert knowledge, Some rely almost entirely on political astuteness and managing up.
19
So this begs the question, what will differentiate you from all the other smart people.
20
um, What if I were to tell you that there's another ballroom that few people gain access to?
21
I call it the VIP ballroom.
22
Thank you.
23
Think of it like an exclusive backstage pass.
24
To get access, you need to have your ticket to the dance just like everyone else, But over and above that, You need to have something else that sets you apart.
25
Um...
26
I learned over the course of my executive career
27
that the percentage of leaders who are actually prepared to do the hard yards of leadership is surprisingly small.
28
To get access to the VIP ballroom, You need to grow your leadership capability with the same commitment that you approach your technical career with.
29
you'll realise that you can't just rely on your smarts.
30
and you work on becoming a professional leader.
31
So you'll study, you'll read, you'll educate yourself in leadership.
32
you'll learn from the really good and really bad leaders that you find around you.
33
you'll overcome your natural conflict aversion.
34
you'll put time and energy into building capability and growing talent.
35
Amen you'll set high standards for behaviour and performance and you'll hold people accountable for meeting those standards.
36
So You'll also develop some behaviours that are going to set you apart from other smart people.
37
Thank you the internal fortitude and discipline to do difficult things when they need to be done without hesitation and without rationalization.
38
The willingness to put respect before popularity the selflessness to subordinate what's best for you personally for the good of the company.
39
the sophistication to turn your natural resilience into grace under pressure, and the deep empathy and compassion that's needed to galvanise a team.
40
You can't overlook the capabilities that secure your Ticket to the Dance
41
But if you want to differentiate yourself from your equally smart and ambitious peers, you need to earn that ticket to the VIP ballroom.
42
And the only way to get that ticket is by developing extraordinary leadership capability.
43
This is the path to delivering the sorts of results that they simply can't ignore.

  • "What will differentiate you from all the other smart people?"
  • "You need to have something else that sets you apart." -
  • "The willingness to put respect before popularity."
