Let's punch a hole in the Earth to harvest power.

Deep underground, leftover heat from our planet formation and radioactive decay heats up the surrounding rocks and water.

We can use this heat to warm our homes or generate electricity.

Dig a few meters down and you should hit a stable ground temperature.

Then simply send water along an underground pipe and turn on your heat pump to produce warm air for your home.

But why stop there?

Digging a few kilometers deeper is tough, especially through hard, igneous rock.

But if you pick a spot where the rock is warmed by magma itself, you can reach temperatures high enough to make steam, drive a turbine, and produce enough electricity to power a city.

So, what's the catch?

Well, as you pump water down to tap that heat, you've got to keep an eye on the pressure.

Too high, and it can widen fissures and cause small earthquakes.

Too low, worse if it's mixed with toxic compounds.

But if you can get the steam safely back up to the surface, you can enjoy a steady stream of renewable energy from right under your feet.
