Ah friends, you know how we do money out of?
2
Money in Europe?
3
Money in Europe?
4
Medicare for?
5
Michigan?
6
We did it!
7
My name is Abdurrahman Muhammad Al -Sayyid,
8
and I am so proud and honored to stand here as your senator -elect from the great state of Michigan.
9
Up until right about now, you might have noticed, I always say, inshallah, or God willing, whenever the outcome of this race was mentioned.
10
But today, tonight, we can turn that inshallah into a...
11
Alhamdulillah.
12
this for the for the right -wing ops
13
that just means praise be to God this movement for money out of politics money in your pocket
14
and Medicare for all
15
I just want to thank you everybody who knocked the door made a call sent a dollar posted a story,
16
and most importantly, gave us your stake in democracy.
17
You took a chance on the unlikeliest of candidates, so thank you.
18
This is all yours.
19
Michigan, I cannot wait to serve you with the same big -heartedness, open -mindedness, grit and earnestness that you've shown me.
20
You welcomed me to your homes, your churches, your synagogues, your VFW and Union Halls.
21
You shared moments of frustration and sadness and vulnerability with me.
22
You gave me grace and strength in my lowest moments and the hope and inspiration that powered my best.
23
I love you back.
24
And I hope that I can bring it all with me.
25
I hope I can bring it all with me to Washington in your service.
26
Thank you for your trust and your belief and your kindness.
27
I'm gonna take it all with me and I hope to bring back the kind of leadership that more than earns it.
28
The last month has brought the stakes of this election into sharp relief.
29
Ours, this beautiful movement was built over the past year and a half campaigning across
30
Michigan's biggest cities and its smallest towns.
31
We spoke of a brighter, a bigger, more hopeful Michigan.
32
Theirs?
33
An astroturfed, corporate -funded advertising campaign built to deceive and distract.
34
Rather than try to unite us to contend with the crisis of gas or groceries, the opposition decided to try to divide us.
35
At first, they pointed to my name and my faith as if to say, you know, he's a little different.
36
And when it didn't work, they tried to guilt me by association.
37
And when that didn't work, they went all in on one of the ugliest campaigns we've seen in our lifetimes.
38
They might have been pointing to my name and my faith, but we all know that my name
39
and my faith aren't the reason you can't afford your gas not the reason
40
you can't afford your groceries not the reason you can't see a duck
41
now as I was campaigning some of you would come up
42
and ask how come you don't hit back how come you don't call them racist
43
or hateful because here's the thing I didn't run for myself
44
and in truth they weren't targeting me they were just weren't just attacking me they were targeting
45
and attacking you they were targeting
46
and attacking the very idea of america see they hate the
47
idea of an america big enough for anyone who looks a little different
48
or prays a little different or whose family comes from a different part of the world
49
that includes me but it also includes anyone
50
and everyone who doesn't look like them pray like them love like them
51
or is it rich like them
52
so they turn this race into a simple choice they want an America
53
that is too small for some of us we know that America is big enough for all of us.
54
Big enough to take on the crises that we face.
55
Day by day, Trump's insults became uglier and coarser.
56
But I got to spend those days with you, learning about your struggles, your hopes, and the things that inspire you.

61
A grandma on the east side fighting to make sure that the violence that took her son doesn't take her grandson too.
62

68
that another heart attack doesn't take food off the table for his 30 employees
69
or their families his hope that his workers don't have to worry about how they'll feed their families
70
see I didn't get into this to defend myself no I got into it
71
because their fights are my fight
72
and their hopes are all of our hopes
73
we don't do this work for ourselves
74
we do this work for each other to defend us all from another generation's youth treasure
75
and opportunity squandered at the altar of endless war to defend us all from corporate oligarchs who bought
76
and sold our government to rig the system against us to
77
defend us all from a healthcare system more interested in monetizing our illness than healing our bodies
78
and minds to defend us all from air too putrid to breathe
79
and water too putrid to drink to defend us all from losing our voting
80
or our reproductive or our human rights see i i ran
81
to defend us all from politicians who want to divide us rather than movements
82
that work to dignify us across our primary
83
and general election campaigns they spent over get this 350 million dollars trying to beat us
84
that is a record here in michigan 70 million dollars alone
85
in the primary funded by all the same cats who funded the general election
86
and that's a record anywhere in this country
87
but y 'all michigan we built something bigger than a bank account we built a movement
88
government of the people by the people and for the people
89
we showed that in a battle between the money and the many that the many really can win and
90
so to all the kids who watched
91
this last month to all the parents who struggled to explain why the president openly mocks someone for their name
92
or how they pray let them know tomorrow that the bad guy's lost
93
Let them know I want you to let them know
94
Let them know that we together
95
Fighting for something bigger
96
We won So Mike Enjoy your retirement I know you got a house in Florida and two yachts.
97
See, you chose hate and Michigan chose hope.
98
May we never have to see the likes of you in this state again.
99
JD.
100
Habibi.
101
There is this delicious irony in the fact
102
that your constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January so you know that means
103
Wolverine one Buckeye zero
104
Donald look I know you you struggled with my name
105
so after JD swears me in in January you can just go on and call me senator.
106
To the super PACs and special interests who tried to beat us, we are coming for your system of politics.
107
To APAC who spent 42 million dollars against us, thank you for giving me the opportunity to beat you twice.
108
I don't want to say something here, see they try to call you hateful.
109
if you believe that
110
Palestinian kids should get to grow up in the land of their forefathers do not be murdered by our tax dollars

114
Michiganders believe in Michigan and I believe in Michiganders.
115
And I am so honored that Michiganders believed in me.
116
See, you took a bet on the least likely of candidates.
117
I'm not a politician.
118
I'm a doctor with an 11 -letter first name.

128
Guess what?
129
It's November 3rd.
130
And the votes have been counted.
131

132

137
that we together we can defeat a record 70 million dollars of outside spending
138
and 11 to 1 money disadvantage in a primary election
139
that we can defeat a quarter of a billion dollars in a general election
140
we can defeat the cynicism of a politics that preys on our earnestness undersells our intelligence and exploit our disagreements tonight
141
Michigan we beat a machine
142
and we prove once again just how big America really is
143
because where else where else
144
but in America can a doctor named Abdurrahman Mohammed Sayed a child of immigrants raised by his father
145
and his daughter of the American Revolution and stepmother get elected senator from America's greatest state.
146
They tried to confuse you.
