How do you learn vocabulary and not forget it?
2
Let me show you.
3
Hello there, my friend.
4
This is Keith from the Keith Speaking Academy.
5
So listen, how do you learn vocabulary?
6
Maybe you just memorise lots of new words.
7
Maybe you repeat and recite words.
8
Maybe you expose yourself by listening and reading to lots of English.
9
All of that is really good, but it's not enough.
10
And actually learning vocabulary, there is a very simple way to do it.
11
And that is discover, practice and review.
12
That's all you need.
13
Great.
14
What?
15
Oh, you want more?
16
OK, so this discover, practice and review, it's actually not a line.
17
It's more of a circle, right?
18
Discover, practice and review.
19
Some people think language learning and vocabulary learning is a line that you go along and you get better.
20
In fact, some people think it's a bit like shopping.
21
Do you know, in a course book, you have a unit on food, a unit on sports, a unit on clothes?
22
So some people think, well, that's a bit like shopping.
23
So they go to the food shop and they buy different items, the vocabulary, put it in the bag.
24
They go to the sport shop, buy some shoes, some different items in the bag.
25
They go to the clothes shop and buy the items and put them in the bag and think,
26
great, I've gone to all these shops or units in my book and I've got lots of vocabulary.
27
Great.
28
But the vocabulary is in your bag, not in your head.
29
That is the problem.
30
And it's because vocabulary is not just a line where you collect all the words.
31
The vocabulary that you learn, this circle of discover, practice and review for each word or vocabulary,
32
it actually means you've got lots of these little circles developing as you're learning.
33
They're getting bigger, they're bouncing, they're changing, sometimes they're crashing, sometimes they're overlapping.
34
This discover, practice and review.
35
So listen, let me explain to you these three points
36
and how they can help you learn vocabulary effectively so you don't forget it.
37
Okay, discover.
38
This is discovering new words.
39
Okay, so maybe you find or discover a new word in a story you're reading, in a video you're watching, or a podcast you're listening to.
40
And then you may guess the meaning or go to a dictionary and check.
41
So you'll see maybe more examples of the word and you discover its personality.
42
What do I mean by personality?
43
I mean, first of all, is it a noun, a verb, an adverb, an adjective?
44
What does it sound like, the pronunciation?
45
Which friends does it have?
46
So in the example, you'll see a collocation, at least one collocation, the words that go together with this word.
47
So you're discovering all of these aspects of the word.
48
What does this mean for you?
49
It means it's really important to learn vocabulary in context so you can get this information,
50
especially collocations, and you know better how to use the word.
51
Secondly, it's important you know how to use a dictionary because sometimes you can't guess the meaning and you have to check.
52
And the dictionary can help you get the phonetic script and other examples.
53
I think learning vocabulary is a bit like being a detective, right?
54
When you come across a new word, you have to think, is it important?
55
Is it worth finding out more?
56
If the word, you know, you can guess the meaning, it's not very common, you can just let it go.
57
But if you see a word you don't know, but it keeps coming up again and again and you don't know the word,
58
then it's time to investigate.
59
Get your Sherlock Holmes hat on and investigate the word, right?
60
Find out the meaning, the pronunciation, all the things that I've mentioned.
61
As a minimum, I would say if a word is important, make sure you know one meaning.
62
There will be many, but just get the main one you need for the moment.
63
the word form, noun, verb, adjective, adverb, the pronunciation, and one collocation.
64
And that's enough.
65
Over time, remember those little circles, they will grow and you'll learn more about the word over time.
66
Don't rush it.
67
Language learning is a marathon, right?
68
Not a sprint.
69
Let's take an example, right?
70
And I'll show you through the dictionary what we might do.
71
Imagine I've been reading a book and this sentence came up.
72
Jane thought the jumper was too expensive, so she decided to shop around.
73
OK, I can guess more or less the meaning.
74
And I know the word shop as a noun, but here I can see it's a verb.
75
So I just go into the Cambridge Dictionary to check.
76
Now, I say the Cambridge Dictionary, you can use
77
Collins, Merriam -Webster.
78
They're all good, right?
79
The Oxford Learners Dictionary is good.
80
Shop comes up as a noun.
81
I knew that.
82
But it's also a verb, right?
83
To buy things in shops.
84
And interesting, the examples.
85
I like to shop at secondhand shops.
86
I'm shopping for food.
87
Okay, so I'm learning a bit more.
88
I'll make a note.
89
Shop for, that's good to know.
90
But I want shop around.
91
So that's a phrasal verb, right?
92
So I can just actually search for because most dictionaries have phrasal verbs as an entry,
93
shop around to compare the price and quality of the same or similar object in different shops.
94
So, it's comparing the prices.
95
Great.
96
Got it.
97
Okay.
98
I've got the pronunciation, which I can paste and copy.
99
I can even listen to it here.
100
It's great.
101
So, now I'm building up all this information like a criminal record on this word, right?
102
That's it, the discover process.
103
The second step, practice.
104
And this is where you try to use the words, right?
105
I mean, it's all well and good having all these new words in your book,
106
in your bag, but you need to practice them to learn them more deeply.
107
Now, you can practice through writing, through speaking, through just repeating words,
108
or better still, all of the above.
109
All of those, right?
110
Now, there's a very simple technique that I show in my course, my online course, which is the Speaking Success System,
111
which is where you change different parts of a sentence.
112
So, let's take an example, right?
113
For example, I am shopping around for a new jumper.
114
Okay.
115
Now, I'm going to ask you to repeat that, but to change the noun, okay, to a new noun.
116
I'll show you a picture and then you change the word, change the noun.
117
I'm shopping around for a new jumper.
118
Change new jumper to this.
119
I'm shopping around for a new phone.
120
Great.
121
Now change to this.
122
I'm shopping around for a new car.
123
Excellent.
124
Now change the tense to the past tense.
125
I was shopping around for a new car.
126
Or it could be I shopped around.
127
I shopped around for a new car.
128
Right?
129
Change to the future.
130
I will shop around for a new car.
131
Or I'm going to shop around for a new car.
132
Could even say I will be shopping around for a new car next week.
133
Okay.
134
Finally, you could change the person.
135
Instead of saying I like to shop around, what about she?
136
she likes to shop around okay so through this kind of changing different words vocabulary
137
and different tenses you're practicing and practicing and building your flexibility
138
and then finally you could just make up little stories
139
or make up your own sentences which are true for you right something
140
that is true for you i actually hate shopping around but my wife always shops around when we go to buy something.
141
It's absolutely true.
142
Saying things that are true for you make the language more personal and deeper.
143
Your learning is deeper.
144
So what does this mean for you?
145
Practice, practice, practice.
146
That's what it means for you.
147
If you're on your own, you can practice like this, repeating.
148
If you're, I don't know, with other people or have friends you can practice with in conversation, you can do it or just writing as well.
149
Or all of the above.
150
Let's move on.
151
Okay, part three is review.
152
And this basically means getting some kind of feedback so you deepen your understanding of the word.
153
There are maybe two main ways to get feedback on your practice of the word and your understanding of the word.
154
One is the classic, a teacher or another student corrects you when you make a mistake, right?
155
You say, oh, she shop around for new clothes.
156
And the teacher says, no, no, no, she shops around.
157
Oh, right, got it, right?
158
So that's one way of getting feedback.
159
You can get feedback from a teacher.
160
Actually, you can also get feedback from real life.
161
I think this is quite funny.
162
Talking about the classroom is not real life.
163
Real life is out in the world.
164
No, but in the classroom, I'm still alive.
165
Yes, but it's not real life.
166
But when you're out in the real world, okay, the other real world, I know many of you are living in English speaking countries.
167
And when you're out practicing language, you say something and the reaction of the other person,
168
the native English speaker, makes you think, oh, something's not right.
169
And you often learn from that experience, right?
170
For example, shop around.
171
Maybe you go to a shop, you speak to the shop assistant and you say something like, well, I like this jumper.
172
It's nice, but I'm going to shop around your prices with other shops.
173
And the shop assistant goes, what?
174
What do you mean shop around our prices?
175
You can't shop around our prices.
176
And you think, oh, something's not right.
177
And you discover, maybe you go and check or you ask and they tell you that you can't shop around prices.
178
You shop around for something, but shop around already means comparing price.
179
So you can't say shop around your prices.
180
So that situation gives you feedback.
181
The other way to get feedback is when you expose yourself to English and you're listening to stuff,
182
watching videos and reading, and you see the word again and again in different contexts.
183
And each time you see the word in a new context, it reinforces your learning and deepens your understanding of how to use it.
184
Especially if you're actively noticing that, right?
185
Making an effort to notice, oh, shop around.
186
I learned that last week and here it is again.
187
And just notice how it's used.
188
Also, the fact that if you can learn vocabulary not only in reading
189
but in listening and watching the different medium help you deepen your understanding
190
so that's it it's the review is basically getting the feedback what does this mean for you i think
191
it means
192
that you must as well as practice is you must expose yourself to the language as much as possible
193
so that you can see it in different see that the word in different contexts and different situations and deepen your learning.
194
If you can get a teacher to give you feedback, that could be useful.
195
Teacher correction is not always the best way because, as teachers know, students often don't listen to correction.
196
They just carry on.
197
So correcting only works if the student is ready, right?
198
But there are other ways to get the feedback and reviewing
199
and exposing yourself to the language is a great way to do it.
200
Great, so there it is.
201
Discover, practice and review.
202
This cycle, when you're learning vocabulary, it's going on and on.
203
And I think being aware of that and trying to do this is really useful.
204
I guess one of the key messages is that when learning vocabulary,
205
to not forget it, try and see or hear vocabulary in as many different ways as possible,
206
different contexts, and try and use it in lots of different ways as well.
207
This methodology, if you like, is a simplified version of the methodology I use in my online course,
208
IELTS Speaking Success, Get a Band 7 Plus Gold.
209
The methodology is the speaking success system, and it's a way that I use to help students learn vocabulary so they don't forget it.
210
What they do is that they discover the language through the model answers in the course.
211
They're then practicing chunks.
212
like changing different parts of the sentence with recorded videos.
213
And I'm giving them prompts and the answer as well.
214
They can practice in breakout rooms.
215
So that's real -time breakout rooms online with other students in very small groups.
216
And they can review the language with quizzes.
217
We have mini stories to help see the language in different contexts.
218
All of that to help you learn vocabulary so that you don't forget it.
219
Do remember, it takes time, right?
220
It's not a line that you accumulate.
221
It's not shopping.
222
It's building up all these little circles over time with patience and practice.
223
So be patient, be curious, notice things, and remember to be a detective.
224
You have to decide if it's worth investigating a word,
225
and then how best to investigate the word so you can learn about it in a deep way.
226
Nice.
227
Listen, if you've enjoyed this video, please do subscribe and turn on notifications.
