1
So one of the most common questions that I get when I'm doing an English live lesson is,
2
how do I remember English vocabulary that I just learned?
3
How do I remember English words and phrases that I just learned yesterday
4
when I'm having a conversation today or when I'm having a conversation tomorrow?
5
And my answer is almost always the same.
6
You need to use those words and phrases a lot.
7
You need to use those words and phrases immediately.
8
And in this English lesson,
9
I will teach you six different techniques.
10
I will give you six tips on how you can do just that.
11
Before we continue though, I do want to thank Preply,
12
the sponsor of this video.
13
If you're looking for an English tutor to help you take your English learning to the next level
14
and help you remember English words and phrases,
15
Preply is a great place to find someone who can help you do just that.
16
And if you use the link in the description below today,
17
you'll get 50% off your first lesson.
18
So you want to remember English words and phrases.
19
Here's the first thing you should do.
20
You should use the words and phrases immediately.
21
And the technique I would like you to try is this.
22
It's called the write, listen, write technique.
23
And it works this way.
24
You take the words you've just learned.
25
You write a sentence using each and every word,
26
maybe one sentence per word.
27
And then you use a website like Youglish.
28
If you're not familiar with Youglish,
29
you can type in the word that you are learning
30
and it will find clips of YouTube videos where people say that word out loud.
31
So, you write the sentences,
32
then you go to Youglish and you listen to a few English speakers use the sentence,
33
and then you write again.
34
That's why it's called write, listen, write.
35
Then you write some more sentences using those words.
36
When you use the word,
37
it makes you think about how to use it.
38
When you hear the word,
39
you hear examples of how it can be used.
40
And then when you write it again,
41
you put both of those things together.
42
So try that technique.
43
Technique number Number one, write, listen, write.
44
Technique number two, you need to visualize the word and you can do this in three different ways.
45
The first way is going to be familiar to you if you've watched my lessons for a while.
46
I like it when people draw pictures beside words that they are learning.
47
If you learn the word for dog, draw a dog.
48
If you learn the word to run or the verb to run,
49
draw a person running.
50
When you connect the meaning of the word to a visualization of the word,
51
that's a big word isn't it?
52
It just means a picture.
53
It helps you to remember.
54
The second thing you can do is you can take pictures if that works.
55
If you've just learned a lot of new words and phrases for a place like a park,
56
go to a park and take pictures of the things.
57
Take pictures of the things where you just learned the word for that thing.
58
And then lastly, you can simply use your imagination to visualize the meaning of the word.
59
Now I understand this doesn't work for every single word
60
but it certainly would work for words like what you're seeing around me now.
61
Grass, tree.
62
Actually, I would probably call this a bush.
63
If you can visualize the meaning of the word,
64
do that and it will help you remember.
65
So three things, draw a picture,
66
take a picture, or visualize the meaning of the word.
67
Technique number three is to use the word in a conversation as soon as you possibly can after learning it.
68
And that's where Preply, the sponsor of this video, comes in.
69
When you learn new words,
70
and if you have a tutor from Preply,
71
you can use those new words in your next conversation with your tutor.
72
You can even send those words to your tutor in advance,
73
and the Preply tutor will make sure they plan for a way to practice those words and phrases with you.
74
And whenever you practice something,
75
whenever you review it, after you learn it,
76
you are just going to remember it more easily.
77
If you're not familiar with Preply,
78
it's a place where you can find an English tutor.
79
And if you use the link in the description below today,
80
you'll get 50% off your your first lesson.
81
When you visit Preply, tutors there specialize in all different ways of helping people learn English.
82
But the one thing they all specialize in,
83
they are all really good at helping you learn new vocabulary
84
and helping you practice that new vocabulary so that you remember it for your next English conversation.
85
So once again, thank you to Preply for sponsoring this video.
86
If you're interested and if you use the link below today,
87
you'll get 50% off your first lesson.
88
Technique number four, practice using the word over a period of time.
89
What I mean is this,
90
if you learn the word on a Tuesday,
91
you should practice it that day and you should practice using it the next day and then a week later,
92
and two weeks later, and then a month later,
93
and then two months later.
94
When you space out the repetition,
95
it has been proven scientifically that you will remember that thing better.
96
You will remember those words better.
97
When you practice on one day and then don't practice again,
98
it's like your brain is a pail with a hole in it,
99
and you keep putting water in it and it keeps running out.
100
If you don't revisit the word that you've learned every week,
101
at least for a little while,
102
eventually you just don't remember it anymore.
103
So technique number four, make sure you space out the repetition.
104
Make sure you space out the times where you review the words and phrases that you are learning and I guarantee you,
105
you will remember them way better.
106
Technique number five, and I will say this is a bit more advanced.
107
Try writing a story with the words and phrases that you just learned.
108
Human beings love stories and we actually find stories much easier to remember than simply having a list of words.
109
If you can write a simple story using the words and phrases that you just learned,
110
you are more likely to remember them.
111
And I would add this as another level here.
112
If you can write a comic strip where you're drawing pictures and using words and phrases that you've just learned,
113
you'll be even better set to remember them at a later time.
114
So technique number five, write a story or write a comic strip,
115
use the words and phrases that you just learned.
116
And hopefully that helps you just remember them way better when you need to use them in your next English conversation.
117
Technique number six, as much as possible,
118
act out the words you are learning.
119
Now, I know this doesn't work for every single word,
120
but it is a very effective way to remember things.
121
If I was teaching you the verb to slap,
122
and I said, to slap means to hit someone across the face with an open hand,
123
you might remember that.
124
But if I said the verb to slap means this,
125
you're probably more likely to remember it.
126
That was a little harder than what it was when I rehearsed this scene.
127
Anyways, if you can act out verbs,
128
especially, if you can act out the verb to jump,
129
to clap, to slap, to punch,
130
be a little careful there,
131
you will remember those words a lot better.
132
And again, I know this doesn't work with every single word or phrase,
133
but when you can, if you can act it out as you're learning it,
134
as you're saying it out loud,
135
you're more likely to remember it.
136
Well, there you have it.
137
Six things that you can do to help you remember new English words and phrases.
138
And let's take a minute to review all of them.
139
Number one, you should use the words immediately.
140
Number two, you should visualize the words.
141
Number three, you should use the words in your next English conversation.
142
And I do encourage you to use the link below to Preply to get 50% off your first lesson.
143
And I guarantee you the Preply Tutor will help you remember new words and phrases.
144
Number four, space out the repetition and the review.
145
Learn it today, review it tomorrow,
146
review it next week, review it a month from now.
147
Number five, write a story using the new words and phrases.
148
And then number six, act out the words that you are learning.
149
Well, thank you so much for watching this English lesson.
