Welcome to episode 2 of the Tesla-powered mini jet boat build.
2
Today we're fixing the batteries and building a totally custom Tesla motor to power it.
3
It's so smooth.
4
In this project, we're learning so much about high-voltage electric drivelines while pushing the limits of what's possible with them.
5
At the end of this episode, we're doing the first successful test drive of the boat.
6
Let's start today by removing the batteries so we can fix them.
7
I'm standing in a metal boat, touching the live terminals.
8
Any last words?
9
Oh yeah!
10
Ah, so much more barren in here.
11
Next, let's pull out our Model 3 motor we put in in the last episode.
12
There's nothing particularly wrong with it.
13
I just don't like the inverter relocation mod, and I know we can do better.
14
So, I've identified the worst cell.
15
So this is a good cell here, 3.87, right here.
16
0.19 volts.
17
All the cells in this region right here are completely drained and they are unrecoverable.
18
Once they get below about two volts, they're completely shot.
19
The chemical makeup inside of them changes and they're no longer able to be charged again.
20
These are the two new modules we are replacing the junk ones with.
21
Now we have to make these four modules play nice together by balancing them out to the same voltage.
22
These two packs were at 92 volts, which is pretty full, so I need to drop them down to match these two at 83.
23
Luckily, it's pretty easy to remove power from a battery.
24
This is so awesome!
25
We're boiling water with just one of these modules.
26
These battery modules carry an insane capacity, and they have such low resistance that they can put out a ton of current.
27
I'm pulling about 30 amps with this little setup, but that is nothing for these liquid cooled batteries, they can put out over 600 amps each.
28
It's just crazy.
29
Now that the battery modules are balanced, we can get ready to reinstall them.
30
Version two of the battery boxes is going together way more professionally than the first round.
31
The last version had a bunch of silicone wrapped around all these bolts to seal it up
32
and it was super nasty looking.
33
You can't just put a rubber washer on these bolts
34
because they have a load on them and it'll just squish the rubber everywhere.
35
So I've come up with a solution.
36
I found these washers.
37
They're for like a hydraulic pump.
38
Those will tighten up and they can handle a ton of load while they're sealing with that rubber washer there.
39
They're not very cheap.
40
This was $400.
41
What have we done?
42
It's the best way to do it.
43
It's the only way.
44
I don't know what to tell you, man.
45
These electric projects are just expensive.
46
Since we're using an aftermarket battery management system, we can get rid of the Tesla control boards off of these new modules, just like last time.
47
And then we can add our cell tap wires that monitor and balance the voltage across each of our 96 cells.
48
Last time we soldered to these battery tabs and it did not work well.
49
So this time we're crimping to them.
50
It looks a little crude, but this is actually the best option here.
51
I'm upgrading all the wiring with removable plugs to make assembly and any repairs in the future a lot easier. is fully assembled
52
and i want to test the cooling system in each module we're just gonna put about 10 psi in
53
and let it hold for a little while make sure we don't have any leaks all good
54
finally we are sealing up the new batteries
55
looks so good this is our new motor
56
and this thing is gonna be crazy our model 3 motor was an impressive 280 horsepower,
57
but this custom-tuned Model S motor will make over 350 horsepower.
58
You know you're doing some sketchy stuff when they try to hide the bolts from you?
59
That know right where they're at.
60
You can see the gearing reduction here.
61
So that one's spinning 9.7 times slower than that one.
62
This is the RPM we're after.
63
Horsepower is great, but the coolest part about this motor is it can spin over 18 000 rpm
64
i've got the motor fully gutted now and we can check out how it works this is the inverter
65
that controls how much power the motor gets and the rotor The rotor lives in there like that,
66
and this is what generates the torque.
67
When this is in the car, there's a bunch of gears in here
68
that reduce the RPM of the motor to the axle outputs right here about 9 to 1,
69
but we need the full RPM of the motor.
70
The way we're going to do
71
that is by adding this custom stub shaft right into the tail end of this
72
and drive it all the way in so that we have the jet drive connected directly to the rotor on the motor.
73
It's also too wide to go in the boat just like this
74
and we don't need this whole section that used to carry all the gears
75
so we're going to slice it off and weld the cap on it.
76
Oh Now
77
we're gonna mill this part perfectly flat.
78
I'm not a machinist.
79
I'm using random parts to jig this thing up.
80
We're gonna ratchet strap it down and just run the mill into it, make it flat. That worked really good.
81
I can't believe it didn't fly off of here.
82
Wow.
83
Not bad.
84
Definitely good enough to weld to.
85
We got our oil pressure fitting installed.
86
This is definitely the world's first Tesla with an AN race fitting welded to the top of it for oiling.
87
Since we removed the internal oil pump and some of the gears that splash oil around,
88
I need to add a couple different ports to spray oil on our bearings to make sure they stay cool and lubricated.
89
Modifying the rotor was the key to the whole build here.
90
I had this section removed from this rotor.
91
Look at that.
92
So this is what it used to look like.
93
And I had a machine called a wire EDM that cut all the way around to the profile of our new shaft.
94
And it removed this blank.
95
It is unfathomably precise.
96
Like we're talking smaller than human hairs by like a thousand it.
97
Now that the rotor is bored out to the correct diameter, we can slide our new stub shaft in.
98
So we're going to have to chill this part down to shrink it and then slide it in.
99
I really wanted to use my liquid nitrogen for this, but I used it all up making ice cream.
100
I had this in the freezer for a few hours, so it's nice and shrunk down.
101
Hopefully it pops in.
102
If we mess this up, it's a really big deal.
103
It's going!
104
I think that's all we're gonna get.
105
That's okay.
106
It doesn't need to go in all the way.
107
It's definitely not gonna come out.
108
Sweet!
109
If I would have used the liquid nitrogen, it for sure would have went in all the way.
110
Oh baby!
111
This is now officially a jet boat motor.
112
This is the standard jet pump adapter flange.
113
That is so cool.
114
It is time to install our extremely custom modified Tesla rotor.
115
It's a real pain in the butt to get out.
116
If we mess this up, it's not good.
117
You can damage the bearings.
118
Oh my gosh.
119
Now we're going to put this cap on here.
120
And you see how that shaft lines up right here.
121
We just need to poke a hole in the top of this thing.
122
Stick the shaft out and then put a little seal right here.
123
That's it dude, we're done.
124
I made this little ceiling flange out of a piece of half-inch aluminum plate.
125
And I'm going to use a razor blade to scribe its perfect location on the housing
126
so I can take it off and weld it.
127
This thing fits perfect.
128
This is the stator.
129
This is what actually puts the current from the inverter into the rotor.
130
Oh yeah.
131
You have to put a lot of thought into how the whole system works before you can design parts. For example,
132
the diameter of this shaft is determined on the diameter of this bearing being able to slide over top of it.
133
If it was larger than that, we'd have a very big problem.
134
To get this shaft installed perfectly aligned with the factory rotor was not easy.
135
Lots of planning, redoing the oil system, cutting the case, everything to make this happen.
136
I'm so proud of this motor.
137
I think it's really going to work good.
138
This is the inverter.
139
What it does is it takes the two big DC power leads from your batteries
140
and converts it to a three-phase AC output to run the motor with all these control boards inside of here.
141
This inverter has a huge problem for us here, and that's that logo right there.
142
The stock control boarding here makes it really hard to control the motor when it's not in a Tesla vehicle.
143
But luckily for us, somebody else has spent a ridiculous amount of time developing a new one
144
that we can install and control this thing however we want.
145
We just need to pop off the Tesla control board, grab our new control board, and solder a few connectors to it.
146
Too easy, dude.
147
Too easy.
148
Got our aftermarket inverter board installed now
149
This motor is so close to not fitting.
150
There is an eighth inch of clearance on the bottom side, but I love how it looks in here.
151
Let's whip up some new motor mounts and modify the hull just a little bit to accept them. so Check
152
out our suspension system.
153
These rubber isolators are out of a military crate that held a jet engine.
154
Look how well this works.
155
They have their own suspension inside the boat.
156
I got my spacesuit gloves on.
157
We're doing the final install on the battery here.
158
Yeah, it didn't even explode this time.
159
Can't wait to see this motor spin.
160
I think we can do it today.
161
There we go.
162
We also need to redo all of the coolant hoses.
163
This is kind of fun.
164
There's a lot of crazy shapes.
165
This is my favorite because it looks like a little puppy.
166
We are ready to fill it up with coolant and oil.
167
I've got the motor full of oil so we can turn on the pump and test the flow.
168
It pulls out of the bottom of the case there
169
and comes in the top here and we get to see it draining into the case.
170
Wow, look at that.
171
What?
172
That's so cool.
173
Now we can hook it up.
174
Charge port sensor is plugged in.
175
Now we will see if it starts to charge.
176
No, wait.
177
It's charging.
178
Is charging power status on?
179
It's pulling nine amps.
180
Let's go.
181
I'm so pumped.
182
seeing this thing charge after all those hours of work really pays off
183
it's 3 30 in the morning i just got connected to
184
the inverter you actually use wi-fi for the upgraded board
185
that i put in there you can see we're connected to inverter
186
this is months in the making we are ready to spin over the model s motor in the boat
187
oh my gosh i'm so excited enable i'm gonna give it a little throttle and see if it spins
188
oh this thing is silent the model 3 motor is a lot louder let's go
189
There's a lot of little things to do, but I just want to get it on the water and make sure that it works.
190
You want to go with?
191
I got your harness in the mail today. Are you ready, dude?
192
Can't wait.
193
I'm so pumped.
194
Yeah, the last test drive we did was a year ago.
195
We didn't have time to put the seats in.
196
I hope that's in here.
197
Bro, are we gonna die?
198
Power on the motor.
199
For all the testing today, I'm gonna set the power limit to about 60% and the maximum RPM about 50%.
200
I think it's ready to go.
201
See, we got full bars of battery.
202
Fully charged.
203
I'm nervous.
204
Ready?
205
Dude!
206
She's working.
207
It's working.
208
Oh my gosh.
209
It sounds so smooth.
210
It's so quiet.
211
Oh, she wants to rip.
212
I guess we're just off to sea.
213
Okay, calm down.
214
When should we give it full power?
215
Not yet.
216
Floor it.
217
Oh crap!
218
Oh crap!
219
Dude!
220
No way!
221
What the heck?
222
Holy smokes!
223
That is insane!
224
Was that full throttle?
225
No!
226
That wasn't full throttle?
227
No!
228
Oh yeah, okay.
229
Holy crap!
230
What the heck?
231
We just went like 50 miles an hour.
232
That's crazy.
233
Like working on a project in the shop for three years and then the first time you take it out properly,
234
you have to turn your hat backwards because it is that fast.
235
It's 0 to 100.
236
Smoking up the whole environment.
237
Yeah, I am.
238
Couldn't be us.
239
Anyway, did you hear about that new lithium mine going in across the street?
240
Yep.
241
Dude, that's a great wreck.
242
This is so sick.
243
I can't believe it.
244
It's working so good.
245
We're gonna make a couple tweaks, maybe move the batteries forward a little bit, and then all we have to do is paint it, put in the windows, put on the stickers, just like little stuff.
246
Finally, after three years of working on it, it is functional.
247
We officially own a Tesla powered mini jet boat.
248
This is amazing.
249
In the next episode, we are finishing the jet boat build.
250
Huge thanks to Tubi for sponsoring this project.
251
Come back next week for episode 3, or if you want to watch the entire Build series right now, it is live on Tubi.
