1
This is 5150, first album Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, lead vocals.
2
This is a brand new Van Halen, this is a brand new band right here.
3
Very powerful, like a freight train coming straight at your face!
4
I remember hearing, ba-da-da-da-da, when Eddie played that, I just went, whoa, whoa, whoa.
5
My job was, I didn't have a job because I just joined a band and we hadn't figured out anything yet.
6
But I just remember that Ed and Al would stay up all night, Mike would come over early in the morning I guess, and I'd come in around noon or whatever,
7
and then we'd go until about 6 o'clock and it'd work out, you know, just jam, jam, jam.
8
I'd record it on a tape recorder and I'd go home and I'd write lyrics at night.
9
I'd come back the next day and I'd do a vocal and then we'd write another one.
10
We just like one at a time, I think, right?
11
You guys had a couple ideas already.
12
Yeah.
13
At the end of all of this, we brought in Mick Jones from Foreigner to produce it.
14
And then he said that we needed one more song.
15
We all were saying, let's get on the road.
16
We got to take this on the road.
17
We got to get on the road.
18
So we thought, we're done with this record.
19
And Mick's going, now we need one more song.
20
Mick comes to my house in Malibu, walking on the beach.
21
He said, Eddie, play me this.
22
I hear it.
23
And I go, wow, that's cool.
24
I don't want to sing to that.
25
Went in the studio, and I just started singing.
26
Higher and higher.
27
And everybody's going, whoa, whoa.
28
I remember Don Landy going, whoa.
29
You regret singing that high now.
30
Yeah. But that was badass.
31
Magic.
32
Because I remember Mick saying that we need that one song to just round the whole album out. And boom.
33
Thank God we did that.
34
Because Dreams is one of the greatest songs on this record.
35
We didn't let anyone in the studio, but just our band, right?
36
That's right, yeah.
37
Mick Jones and a producer and Don Landy
38
and our manager Ed Leffler would come in once in a
39
while but Warner Brothers nope until it was done
40
and then we played them Why Can't This Be Love Live we didn't even play them the record
41
and Moe Austin Ted Temple of the voice there you go
42
I smell money smells like money that's what Moe Austin said boy was he right
43
so guys you're all very welcome for your vacations and new summer homes you bought after that album came out.
44
We thought we just threw them songs together.
45
We were thinking we did but when we listened back it was just magic.
46
It was brilliant.
47
It was just inspiration, inspiration, inspiration and inspiration lined up with talent and you get a record like that in 10 days.
48
Unbelievable!
49
Thank you.
