After landing in Seattle to collect his ransom, he released all the passengers and ordered the crew to fly into Mexico.

But somewhere over southwest Washington, Cooper opened the rear stairs and jumped into a dark, stormy night over a heavily forested terrain.

He vanished completely.

Then, in 1980, a boy camping along the Columbia River near Vancouver found $5 ,800 of the ransom money buried in the sand,

but nothing else was ever found.

After investigating over 800 suspects, the FBI officially closed the case in 2016.

To this day, no one knows if D .B.

Cooper survived that jump or who he really was.

54 years later, it remains the only unsolved hijacking in American history.
