James and Louise had been in a relationship for six years.

They lived together in a second floor flat in Birmingham.

James worked as a finance manager in an insurance office and Louise was a fitness trainer in a local gym.

James and Louise first met at secondary school.

They started dating soon after they saw each other for the first time.

Some would say that it was love at first sight.

They had also studied at the same university in Scotland, although they studied different degrees and subjects.

After leaving uni, they decided to live in Birmingham

because it had a good social scene and plenty of job opportunities for both of them.

It was a rainy Monday in April when James' world fell apart.

He arrived home after work as usual, but immediately sensed that something wasn't quite right.

They hadn't been burgled, but something was amiss.

Some ornaments were missing.

There was a noticeable space on the wall where a framed photo of him and Louise had hung,

the one of them on the beach in Barbados.

He hastily went to the bedroom and opened the wardrobe door.

There was a gap on Louise's side of the hanging space.

All of her clothes had gone.

He stumbled to the bed in shock.

After what seemed like a long time, James went to the kitchen to make a coffee to steady his nerves, and there it was.

A white envelope with his name on it.

He instantly recognised the handwriting.

He wanted to open the envelope, but at the the same time he dreaded what he was going to find inside.

All of those special moments with each other, all down the drain.

James sat drinking his mug of coffee, delaying the inevitable.

After finishing the dregs of his cup, he held the envelope in his shaking hands and proceeded to open it.

Sorry.

That's all it said.

Sorry.

Written in Louise's curly style of writing.

No explanation, no blame, just sorry.

James put his head on the table and cried.

He didn't sob, it was more of a silent cry with a lot of tears

that fell on the very short letter that Louise had left him.

James screwed up the piece of paper and threw it at the wall.

Then he went to bed and cried himself to sleep.

We were a match made in heaven, he thought.

How could she let me down like this?

She was the love of my life.

The next morning, James did all of his morning routines as usual.

He made his cup of coffee, had breakfast, rode his bike to the city centre and got on with his work at his desk.

Nobody noticed any difference in his manner or his attitude to work that day.

He was his normal self on the outside, but on the inside he was hurting like crazy.

He had so many unanswered questions, mainly because Louise wasn't answering his calls or his messages.

She was giving him the silent treatment and had just disappeared off the face of the earth.

The following day, the enormity of his loss hit James in a big way.

He went to work but found himself crying at the slightest of things.

His work colleagues rallied around him with sympathetic words.

But what do you say to a grown man whose world has fallen apart?

Things like cheer up, it's for the best, or a new girl will come along, weren't what James wanted to hear.

The next day, which James would later refer to as day 4, was a turning point.

While James was standing at the coffee machine, he saw a poster for a local running club that met on Thursdays and Saturdays.

That evening, he found his old running kit at the back of a drawer.

His trainers had seen better days but they would do him for his first try at running in years.

He rode his bike to Perry Park where a group of people of all ages were gathered.

They looked like a friendly bunch so he locked up his bike and walked to the nearest group.

He was greeted with smiles and friendly comments which warmed his heart

and a little bit of hurt was taken over by a good feeling that was hard to describe.

Some of the runners set off at a fast pace.

Others jogged slowly and some chatted as they walked the 5km route around the park.

It was more of a social event than a show of fitness, which added to the good feel of the event.

As James unlocked his bike, he felt something different.

Not only the adrenaline from a gentle jog around the park, but a feeling that life wasn't too bad.

There was life after Louise, a future that he had dismissed yesterday.

Time to move on, James, he said to himself.

The pain was still there, but he had had no contact from Louise.

She had disappeared out of his life.

As hard as it was to think about, it was important for James to make his own life happy again and move on.
