1
There are a lot of people who learn English will focus on the details that are waiting for them.
2
My name is David and I will talk about my experience about this topic.
3
Let's start!
4
Okay, so when I first started learning Vietnamese, I thought that I needed to learn everything.
5
I thought that I needed to know grammar, I needed to know the alphabet, I needed to know how to pronounce everything, I needed to know all the accents, the dấu.
6
I needed to know so much about the language and I didn't know where to start.
7
There were so many things that I could practice and
8
that was just not the most effective thing for me to try to focus on everything.
9
So over the last six years of learning Vietnamese and practicing and studying, kind of on and off, I'm not always perfect about it,
10
but over that period of time, I have learned a very important lesson and a very important principle about language learning.
11
And I want to share that with you today.
12
And that lesson is that it's more important to focus on what you actually need to know,
13
as opposed to everything that you could possibly know about something.
14
So let me kind of break that down.
15
And then I want to share a story about how I kind of came to learn this principle.
16
So first off, everything that you need to know versus everything
17
that you could know about something
18
so let's start with everything you need to know what I'm talking about in this scenario is everything
19
that you need to know is everything
20
that you actually need to be able to do to perform whatever task it is
21
or whatever goal it is that you have
22
so for example let's say I want to be able to do a pull -up in the gym
23
and I go to the gym
24
and all I do is squats squats are not going to
25
get me any closer to doing a pull -up right
26
because it's it's a leg workout as opposed to a back
27
and arms workout and
28
if you're focusing on the wrong things then it's not going to help you
29
but if you do focus on doing what you need to do
30
or do what you need to be able to do for
31
that pull -up I'm probably going to be doing pull -ups
32
I'm going to be exercising my back i'm going to be strengthening my arms
33
so that i can do that movement because i'm practicing for
34
that whereas if i were trying to focus on everything
35
that i could possibly know in order to do a pull
36
-up it would probably be i need to know the physical anatomy
37
that goes behind it i need to know every single muscle
38
i need to know the names of the muscles i need
39
to know how much protein i need to get i need
40
to know what kinds of recovery to do like all of
41
those things don't matter as much as just going in
42
and trying to do pull -ups and strengthening a couple muscles
43
that will help you do that right
44
if you focus on everything then you're going to be focusing on pretty much nothing
45
because you don't give time to what actually matters so the story
46
that kind of taught me this happens
47
when i was living in vietnam this was about let's see
48
three years ago roughly maybe a little bit longer ago i was there
49
and i was on the phone with a friend i was talking to them
50
and i was like hey my bike's broken i need to get some help fixing it
51
and this person had lived in the area and they knew some people
52
so i was on the phone
53
and they were like oh
54
and they're like oh
55
you don't know what the word noise it means
56
and they explained it to me and then now i have never forgotten
57
that word because in that moment i needed to know what Doisient meant, but I didn't.
58
And that, I think, is a very important thing to remember when you're learning a language, is that the things
59
that you need to know are going to stick with you a lot better
60
and a lot more quickly if it's something that you needed to know, right?
61
Those things where we have a gap in our knowledge, that's what's going to help us learn the fastest and help us be able to do what we needed to do.
62
And the thing with that story is I didn't need to know how to spell Doi Zian.
63
I didn't need to know all the letters in it.
64
I didn't need to know how to pronounce it perfectly.
65
What I needed to know at that moment was what that word meant.
66
And because I didn't know what that word meant, I couldn't understand it, right?
67
So that's a very specific thing that I needed to focus on
68
and needed to have learned but hadn't yet so obviously that can be taken to an extreme where
69
you can say that for everything where it's like, well, I need to know everything.
70
I need to know it all or else I'm not going to know it when I need it.
71
And I think, yes, that's true.
72
There are things you're going to come across that you need to know, but those are things that you can add to your list of, this is something that I actually need to know because I encountered it.
73
You're not going to have to know everything right off the bat.
74
You're not going to have to know everything immediately
75
and it's good to focus on those things those main skills
76
that are most important to what you're trying to do so
77
that being said what do you actually need to know in english right now
78
what are you preparing for are you trying to be able to just watch tv shows in english
79
and be able to understand it are you trying to prepare
80
for a career overseas where you need to be able to communicate in English and write
81
and be able to do work in English are you trying
82
to just learn English for fun like what are those things for you
83
that you're focused on what is the specific thing
84
and once you've narrowed down the goal
85
that you're working towards think about the specific skills
86
that are related to that for example I mentioned watching TV shows in English the things
87
that you probably want to study there is one listening to
88
english you need to be able to understand how it sounds to be able to watch the show
89
and maybe early on you'll need to know how to read in english
90
because you'll probably have english subtitles on that will help you follow along
91
and be able to learn that skill sooner whereas
92
if you start trying to learn how to write English and learn really deep grammar rules, those things aren't going to help you as much with that goal.
93
So focus on those things.
94
Pick the most necessary parts or skills
95
that you need to learn to be able to do the thing that you're trying to do with English.
96
And then once you've narrowed down that list of things that you need to do, pick the one that you need to know first
97
because you're going to need to start somewhere
98
and the most important one is probably the one you want to start with
99
because that is the one you'll need first you'll need it soonest
100
and that will build a foundation where you can stack other skills on top of it
101
that you need
102
and then eventually you'll get to the point where you have arrived at all of the skills
103
that you need you've learned all of those skills to do what you need to do
104
and then from there you can learn other things.
105
But I think it's very helpful to start with what you need.
106
So for me right now, as far as how I study Vietnamese and what I'm learning, I don't study the same way that I did when I was in Vietnam.
107
I had different goals at that point.
108
I had different things that I needed to be able to do.
109
And one of those big things that I needed to do
110
while I was there was I needed to be able to talk with people.
111
I needed to be able to have conversations because the work I was doing there as a volunteer,
112
I was going out every single day and talking to people and meeting them and introducing myself and trying to teach them.
113
And I needed to be able to do those specific skills all the time.
114
So that's what I tried to practice the most so
115
that I could be able to do it very well now
116
that i'm home and i'm in america i've been here for three
117
and a half years three years something like that i don't need
118
that conversational skill as much i very rarely need to be communicating in vietnamese
119
and having a conversation so i've kind of switched over to what I actually need
120
because right now I work as a interpreter for the church
121
that I attend and they do this thing called general conference
122
and in conference they have a lot of speakers a lot of people get up
123
and talk and they translate it and broadcast it
124
and send it over to people in vietnam
125
so i help with the interpretation which is i get a talk
126
or what the people are going to be speaking
127
and then i will read that talk along with them
128
and stay in time with them so the skills
129
that i need to know for
130
that is i need to one be able to read out
131
loud i need to be able to read fluently very well very quickly
132
and two i need to be able to do simultaneous translation
133
which means if they go off script
134
or do something that's not written down then I have to be able to translate
135
that as they're saying it and come up with those words
136
so those are the two skills
137
that I will practice the most is reading out loud
138
and practicing simultaneous translation
139
and at this point I feel like my weakest skill is
140
conversation I don't know really don't know how to talk in Vietnamese as well as I did
141
when I was living in Vietnam and practicing that.
142
So I think goals can shift over time.
143
I think it's important to pick the one that's the most important to you right now.
144
Pick those things that you need to know to be able to do that goal and work on those.
145
I think that's an important principle that I've learned in my language study and my language practice and all of that.
146
And really focusing on those things
147
that you need to know as specific as you can is going to help you progress sooner and faster.
148
And that really helps build momentum and help get the ball rolling
149
because you're seeing tangible progress in a skill that you need, in an area that you need.
150
And that helps pick up motivation.
151
I know last week i talked about lacking motivation in learning english doing the things that you can see
152
and doing skills and practicing and seeing progress will help you have more motivation
153
we lose motivation the fastest when we can't see any progress
154
and we can't see the point in doing it
155
so focus on those things that are very specific
156
and they will help you get to where you're trying to go all right
157
that was a lot thank you for sticking around on this journey
158
if you have a friend or you know someone
159
that struggles to focus on what they actually need to study
160
or they're trying to learn everything at one time send this video to them help them focus in
161
and yeah that's all i've got for you today bye bye
