Listen, you was really really something back then.

Did you notice how informal Donkey's speech actually sounds?

For instance, after the word you, he used was instead of were.

You was.

That's grammatically incorrect but you'll hear it in many parts of the United States for example.

Donkey is voiced by the actor Eddie Murphy, who decided to bring this fun personality to the character that kinda sounds a lot like Eddie himself.

We get to hear many more examples of his informal speech throughout the scene, like when he says the word something.

Listen, you was really really something back then.

At first I thought it sounded like he dropped the G at the end so that would be the informal

something instead of something.

Something, something.

But then I noticed he actually pronounced the even more informal something.

Like for example, do you want something to eat?

Damn man, those guards, they thought they was all of that.

Then you showed up and bam!

They was tripping over themselves like babes in the woods.

So Donkey here is describing in a really funny way how the guards looked when running away from Shrek.

The phrase to trip on something means to catch your foot on something and stumble.

That is to lose your balance and maybe even fall.

Then you showed up and BAM!

They were tripping over themselves like babes in the woods.

Now babes in the woods is an idiom

that describes people who are totally new or inexperienced in a situation

and don't really know what's going on and how to react.

For example, let's say a friend of yours moved to New York City

and told you that she felt like a baby in the woods on her first day in the big city.

And by the way, the expression, the woods, literally refers to a natural location that is full of trees like a forest.

Like this place they're in right now, they're in the woods.

And I'm not going out there by myself.

Hey wait a minute, I got a great idea!

I'll stick with you!

You a mean green fighting machine.

Together we're scared to spit out anybody that crosses us!

The phrasal verb to stick with somebody, when used casually like this, means to stay with somebody, to be with them.

It's kind of similar to another phrasal verb, to tag along.

Check out these other two examples.

It's also used in the context of remaining loyal even in difficult situations and over a long period of time, like when couples stick together through tough times.

But you can also stick with your job, ideas, or plans.

Ah, and here the informal way he says it too, I'll stick with you.

100

Hey wait a minute, I got a great idea!

101

I'll stick with you!

102

You a mean green fighting machine!

103

Together we'll scare the spit out of anybody that crosses us!

104

The expression to scare the spit out of somebody is similar to the more common

105

and also more vulgar to scare the shit out of somebody or to scare the crap out of somebody.

106

It basically means to scare someone very badly to cause them to feel fear.

107

So Donkey says that they will scare away anyone who crosses them.

108

In this context, to cross means to oppose or stand in the way.

109

Oh, but no, this is your quest.

110

I don't want to impose.

111

You fold them up.

112

Really?

113

But don't you cross me or your name will be Ferro Muerto.

114

That actually reminds me of another expression, to double cross, which has a different meaning.

115

Can you guess what it means?

116

Check out this other example with the movie Puss in Boots.

117

You have to trust somebody, right?

118

Not me, uh-uh.

119

Whenever I've let my guard down, I've been double-crossed, declawed, played, and betrayed.

120

Never again.

121

To double cross means to betray someone, to surprisingly do something bad to them after initially supporting them.

122

Hey, just a quick question.

123

What do you do to remember all the new words and expressions that you're learning?

124

Like in this lesson, for example, we've already covered many phrases like to trip over yourself, to scare the spit out of somebody, or even the idiom babes in the woods.

125

And we'll go through many more in the rest of the lesson.

126

Now, will you be able to remember and use all of these when you need them?

127

I mean, this is a quite common situation for many English learners.

128

You get into a conversation, and right when you need to use a certain expression you've learned before, it doesn't come to you.

129

It's like your brain just goes blank.

130

Then you pause and you try to remember, but now the whole flow of your sentence has already been ruined because you got stuck.

131

And I know that feels really frustrating to not be able to express yourself the way you'd like.

132

I've been there myself.

133

And that's exactly why we created the RealLife English app, to help you become a confident, natural English speaker by practicing with these lessons the way they were meant to be.

134

On the app, every lesson like this one with movies, TV series, podcasts, it comes with a full transcript and flashcards of the most advanced expressions.

135

And by practicing just 10 minutes a day, you'll be able to remember the words and expressions you're learning forever.

136

Now this happens because of the spaced repetition technology that we developed, which lets you review words just when you're about to forget them.

137

Can you imagine being able to use all this vocabulary when you speak?

138

How powerful this could be to help you reach your goals in life if you remove this English barrier.

139

This is what you can get with the Real Life app

140

and you can unlock this lesson that you're watching right now completely free

141

and it comes with all these resources that I mentioned by clicking the link in the description below.

142

Or you can search for Real Life English on Google Play

143

or the App Store but the link below will take you straight to the lesson, so let's continue watching over there.

144

Come on.

145

Yes, I was talking to you.

146

Can I just tell you that you was really great back then, man.

147

Those gods, they thought they was all of that.

148

Then you showed up and bam!

149

Now there was a ton of instances of connected speech in the first few lines of this scene.

150

Connected speech is the way natives cut, link, and morph words, and it's really important for you to learn it

151

if you want to understand fast speaking natives without subtitles.

152

Let's listen to this part again.

153

Yes, I was talking to you.

154

Can I just tell you that you was really great back then, man?

155

Those gods, they thought they was all of that.

156

Then you showed up and BAM!

157

So first, we hear Donkey drop the G sound in the word talking and link it to a reduced form of to, which would sound like t.

158

But because he links the two words, it sounds like talking to.

159

Now listen and repeat.

160

Yes, I was talking to you.

161

Yes, I was talking to you.

162

So pay attention to the stress words I, tell, and you.

163

Can I just tell you that you was really great back then?

164

You can hear them more clearly than the other words.

165

So the word can got reduced to simply can.

166

The word just loses the t sound at the end and it becomes really short as it morphs with the word tell.

167

Just tell.

168

And finally, in the words that you, there is a combination of the letters T and Y

169

which can be pronounced with a CH sound at the end like ch-ch-ch.

170

That's you.

171

So the entire sentence would be, can I just tell you that you was?

172

So now let's listen and repeat after donkey.

173

Can I just tell you that you was really great back then?

174

Can I just tell you that you was really great back then?

175

And those gods, they thought they was all of that.

176

Again, we see the word was instead of were and the Z sound links to the word all,

177

was all, which is then followed by the word of in its reduced form, uh.

178

They was all of that.

179

They thought they was all of that.

180

Then you showed up and bam!

181

We hear the word and get reduced to a simple mm sound, linking the two words, up and bam,

182

up and bam, and the D sound from showed gets linked to up, showed up.

183

Then you showed up and bam!

184

Then you showed up and bam!

185

That was a nice meaning lesson in pronunciation, right?

186

Really rich lines to explore here.

187

Well now let's get back to the vocabulary.

188

That was really scary and if you don't mind me saying

189

if that don't work your breath certainly will get the job done cause you definitely need some tic tacs

190

or something cause your breath stinks!

191

When Shrek roars to try to get rid of Donkey, Donkey interprets it as Shrek demonstrating how they would scare people away.

192

A roar, or the verb to roar, refers to a loud and deep noise made by animals like a lion.

193

If you have watched the movie Shrek 4 called Shrek After Forever in English, you might remember the classic line, do the roar, which you just find hilarious.

194

Excuse me Mr. Shrek, could you do that ogre roar of yours for my son?

195

He's a big big fan.

196

Do the roar.

197

Now the phrase, if you don't mind me saying, is a polite way for you to introduce an opinion or a comment that might be a little bit bold or offensive.

198

Here, Donkey humorously points out that if Shrek's roar doesn't scare people off, his bad breath will certainly do it, or as he says, his bad breath will get the job done.

199

I did what you asked!

200

What do you want from me?!

201

Sir, sir!

202

If you don't mind my saying, I think you asked for this.

203

Donkey uses this structure to soften the potentially offensive comment about Shrek's stinky breath.

204

To make his point, he jokingly suggests that Shrek might need a Tic Tac, a popular brand of breath freshener.

205

Man, yo, I'm gonna burn the hair out my nose!

206

Just like the time...

207

And then I ate some rotten berries!

208

Rotten berries are spoiled berries.

209

So rotten food is food that has gone bad, that you can't eat anymore.

210

So Donkey says he had strong gases leaking out of his butt, meaning that he was farting.

211

Man, I had some strong gases eking out of my butt that day.

212

By the way, did you notice the connected speech here again?

213

The phrase out of is commonly reduced to just out of.

214

So what we hear is out of my butt.

215

Out of my butt.

216

Anyway, so about the verb leaking, more generally speaking, it means that a liquid or gas is escaping from some container or a pipe.

217

And so you have a leak.

218

Just like in these examples.

219

Now let's watch the rest of the scene and see what happens next.

220

Of course I'm all alone, there's no one here beside me.

221

My problems have all gone, there's no one to deride me.

222

But you gotta have friends.

223

Stop singing!

224

Well, it's no wonder you don't have any friends.

225

Wow.

226

Only a true friend would be that truly honest.

227

Listen, little donkey, take a look at me.

228

What am I?

229

Oh...

230

Really tall?

231

No!

232

I'm an ogre.

233

You know, grab your torch and pitchforks.

234

Doesn't that bother you?

235

Nope.

236

Really?

237

Really, really.

238

Oh, man, I like you.

239

What's your name?

240

Uh...

241

Shrek.

242

Shrek?

243

Well, you know what I like about you, Shrek?

244

You got that kind of, I don't care what nobody thinks of me thing.

245

I like that.

246

I respect that, Shrek.

247

You all right.

248

Woo, look at that.

249

Who's gonna live in a place like that?

250

That would be my home.

251

Oh, and it is lovely.

252

Just beautiful.

253

You know, you are quite a decorator.

254

It's amazing what you've done with such a modest budget.

255

I like that boulder.

256

That is a nice boulder.

257

Nice boulder.

258

My problems have all gone,

259

there's no one to deride me.

260

The word deride is not particularly common in everyday conversation, but you can hear it in the song Donkey Singing.

261

So deride is to laugh at or mock somebody, and it'd be more often used in formal writing.

262

Now in everyday speech you want to use synonyms like mock, make fun of or ridicule.

263

But you gotta have friends!

264

Stop singing!

265

Well it's no wonder you don't have any friends!

266

Wow, that was mean right?

267

Saying it's no wonder Donkey has no friends because of his bad singing?

268

Anyway, so the phrase no wonder is an idiom used to express that something is not surprising.

269

And in this case Shrek is not surprised that Donkey has no friends.

270

Listen, little donkey, take a look at me, what am I?

271

Really tall?

272

No, I'm an ogre.

273

You know, grab your torch and pitchforks.

274

So Shrek here is explaining that when people encounter ogres like himself, they usually go get armed with torches and pitchforks to fight.

275

These tools were commonly used in the past during protests or uprisings.

276

Torches are these objects that are used for lighting the way in the dark.

277

And pitchforks are farming tools like these.

278

Well, no one is running at us with torches and pitchforks, so that's a plus.

279

Now the collocation with torches

280

and pitchforks may also be used figuratively to refer to angry people who are demanding justice or revenge, often in an overly dramatic way.

281

Well, you know what I like about you, Shrek?

282

You got that kind of, I don't care what nobody thinks of me, thing.

283

I like that, I respect that, Shrek.

284

You all right.

285

Despite everything, Donkey is desperate for a friend, So he tells Shrek in a friendly way, you're alright, meaning he has earned his respect or that he thinks Shrek is a good person.

286

It'd be similar to saying I like you or you're a good guy.

287

That would be my home.

288

Oh, and it is lovely, just beautiful.

289

You know you are quite a decorator.

290

It's amazing what you've done with such a modest budget.

291

When referring to the amount of something, modest means limited or small.

292

For example, a modest budget refers to a small or restricted amount of money.

293

Now when describing a person, if you're described as modest, that means humble and not inclined to boasting or talking excessively about yourself.

294

And you've got some pretty big ears, don't you?

295

I guess.

296

Don't be modest, they're huge!

297

Well Aang, it's very nice to meet you.

298

I like that boulder.

299

That is a nice boulder.

300

I just love this line.

301

It's so random and so...dunky.

302

A boulder is basically a very large rock, typically rounded and too big to be moved easily by hand.

303

They was tripping over themselves like babes in the woods.

304

When you trip over yourself, you...

305

get really scared, run very fast, stumble and almost fall.

306

See that?

307

That really made me feel good to see that.

308

Oh, that's great.

309

Really.

310

Man, it's good to be free.

311

Now, why don't you go celebrate your freedom with your own friends?

312

Hmm? But, uh...

313

I don't have any friends.

314

And I'm not going out there by myself.

315

Hey, wait a minute, I got a great idea!

316

I'll stick with you!

317

You a mean green fighting machine.

318

Together we're scared to spit out anybody that crosses us!

319

If you oppose somebody and act against them, you double cross them, cross them,

320

or scare the spit out of them. That was really scary.

321

And if you don't mind me saying, if that don't work, your breath certainly will get the job done, cause you definitely need some Tic Tacs or something, cause your breath stinks!

322

Man, you almost burned the hair out of my nose!

323

Just like the time...

324

And then I ate some rotten berries, man, that had some strong asses eking out of my butt that day.

325

If a fruit is described as rotten, it is not ripe yet, too ripe, or spoiled.

326

Why are you following me?

327

I'll tell you why.

328

Of course I'm all alone.

329

There's no one here beside me.

330

My problems have all gone.

331

There's no one to deride me.

332

But you gotta have three.

333

Stop singing!

334

Well, it's no wonder you don't have any friends!

335

What does the phrase, it's no wonder, mean?

336

It's unbelievable.

337

It's confusing.

338

It's not surprising.

339

Wow!

340

Only a true friend would be that truly honest.

341

Listen, little donkey, take a look at me!

342

What am I?

343

Oh...

344

Really tall?

345

No!

346

I'm an ogre!

347

You know, grab your torch and pitchforks.

348

Doesn't that bother you?

349

Nope.

350

Really?

351

Really, really.

352

Oh.

353

Man, I like you.

354

What's your name?

355

Uh...

356

Shrek.

357

Shrek?

358

Well, you know what I like about you, Shrek?

359

That kind of, I don't care what nobody thinks of me, Vang.

360

I like that, I respect that, Shrek.

361

You all right.

362

Woo, look at that.

363

Who's gonna live in a place like that?

364

That would be my home.

365

Oh, and it is lovely, just beautiful.

366

You know you are quite a decorator.

367

It's amazing what you've done with such a modest budget.

368

Which word is the opposite of modest when describing a certain amount?

369

Limited, humble, excessive.

370

I like that boulder.

371

That is a nice boulder.

372

Ah yeah!

373

Amazing job guys!

374
