The front of the building looked like a face.

Her father wanted to look inside.

It's an adventure, he said.

23
Don't leave me, she shouted, and ran after them.
24
Her small legs worked hard to catch up.
25
The tunnel finally ended.
26
They stepped into a beautiful green field.
27
An empty town was in the middle of it.
28
Warm light touched their faces.
29
No people lived in this town.

Chihiro's mother joined him.
40
Their faces were full of joy.
41
The food was for the gods, but they did not know.
42
The town was completely quiet.
43
There were no birds and there was no wind.
44
Hot food sat on the tables, but there were no cooks.
45
The empty quiet felt very wrong to Chihiro.
46
A deep worry grew in her stomach.
47
She said, We should not eat this.
48
Her parents did not listen.
49
Their mouths were full of food.
50
They only made happy eating sounds.
51
The girl walked away from them.
52
She wanted to explore the quiet town.
53
A big tall bathhouse stood in the center.
54
It looked very important.
55
A long red bridge went to the bathhouse.
56
She saw a boy on the bridge.
57
He looked at her with great surprise.
58
His dark eyes were very serious.
59
He said, you cannot be here.
60
Go back now.
61
You must leave before it gets dark.
62
He seemed very worried for her.
63
For a moment, his eyes had a strange, beautiful light.

It was a city of ghosts.

Chihiro hid behind a wall.
75
Her heart beat very fast.
76
She ran back to her parents.
77
The food was still on the table, but her parents were not there.
78
Two big pigs say it on the chairs.
79
They wore her parents' clothes.
80
The pigs ate the food with loud, greedy noises.
81
Her hands grew cold with terror.
82
These pigs were her parents.
83
She knew it.
84
With a long, loud scream, Chihiro ran away from the horrible sight.
85
She went back to the green field.
86
She had to escape this terrible world.
87
But the field was not a field now.
88
It had become a very big river.
89
The water was deep and wide.
90
There was no way to go back.
91
Her old world was gone.
92
A terrible feeling came over her.
93
She looked at her small hands.
94
They were becoming see -through.
95
She was a human in a world of spirits.
96
The world was rejecting her body.
97
A deep, cold fear filled her stomach.
98
She thought, am I going to vanish forever?
99
She felt so small and lost.
100
The boy from the bridge found her again in the shadows.
101
He was calm and kind.
102
My name is Haku, he said softly.
103
He looked at her sad face.
104
I know you from somewhere.
105
He said to her, you must eat something from this world.
106
He gave her a small red berry.
107
It felt warm in her hand.
108
If you do not eat, you will disappear.
109
Chihiro was scared, but she trusted his serious eyes.
110
She ate the small berry.
111
A warm feeling spread through her.
112
Her body became solid again.
113
She was safe for now.
114
Haku held her hand.
115
His hand was warm and strong.
116
He led her through the busy spirit town.
117
You need a job to survive here, he explained.
118
Yubaba is the witch of this place.
119
She controls the bathhouse.
120
His words gave her a little bit of hope.
121
Yubaba turns lazy people into animals.
122
You must work for her.
123
Then you can stay.
124
He took her toward the giant bathhouse.
125
They had to be very quiet.
126
Haku showed her a hidden path.
127
He told her about a man named Kamaji.
128
He worked deep down in the boiler room.
129
Find Kamaji, Haku whispered.
130
Ask him for a job.
131
He will say no at first, but you must not give up.
132
You must show him you are strong.
133
Chihiro went to the boiler room alone.
134
It was hot and loud.
135
An old man with six long arms worked there.
136
This was Kamaji.
137
He was very, very busy.
138
Small black soot spirits carried heavy coal for him.
139
They were small and cute.
140
One little spirit dropped its piece of coal.
141
The coal was too heavy for its tiny body.
142
The girl picked up the coal.
143
It was surprisingly heavy.
144
She carried it to the fire for the small spirit.
145
Kamaji saw this action.
146
He did not smile.
147
I have enough workers here, he said in a rough voice.
148
Chihiro's hope became very small.
149
Another soot spirit stumbled.
150
Its coal fell to the floor.
151
Before Komaji could shout, Chihiro picked it up.
152
She carried the heavy coal to the fire.
153
Then she looked at Komaji again.
154
Her eyes said, I can work.
155
A woman came with food for Kamaji.
156
Her name was Lin.
157
She was a spirit, too.
158
She looked at Chihiro with unfriendly eyes.
159
Kamaji saw the girl's action.
160
He told Lin, this girl wants a job.
161
Take her to Yubaba.
162
Lin was not happy about it, but she followed Kamaji's order.
163
She helped Chihiro.
164
Lynn took her up many stairs.
165
The bathhouse was huge inside.
166
It was a city in one building.
167
Finally, they reached the top floor.
168
Yubaba's office was behind a big, fancy door.
169
The door had a scary face on it.
170
Yubaba was a very scary old woman.
171
She had a very large head and a small body.
172
Her face was full of deep wrinkles.
173
She smoked a long cigarette.
174
I want a job, Chihiro said.
175
Her voice was small.
176
Yubaba laughed a loud, cold laugh.
177
A human girl, you are weak and useless here.
178
The witch did not want her.
179
She tried to scare Chihiro away with her magic.
180
The air became heavy and cold.
181
Suddenly, a loud noise came from another room.
182
A baby was crying very loudly.
183
It was Yubaba's baby.
184
The baby was huge, bigger than you, Baba.
185
He threw his toys.
186
The witch had to calm her baby down.
187
She was very busy with the giant child.
188
Chihiro saw her chance.
189
She shouted, Please give me a job.
190
I will work very hard.
191
Yubaba was annoyed.
192
The baby was still crying.
193
The witch needed to stop the terrible noise.
194
Fine, Yubaba shouted.
195
You can have a job.
196
But you must give me your name.
197
It was a magical contract.
198
Yubaba took the name Chihiro from her.
199
The letters floated into the witch's hand.
200
She gave her a new name.
201
Her new name was Sen.
202
It was a small name for a small job, but the price for this name was bigger than she knew.
203
The next day, Haku found Sen.
204
He took her to a pig pen behind the bathhouse.
205
She saw her parents.
206
They were still pigs.
207
They did not remember her at all.
208
Sadness was heavy in her heart.
209
She cried quiet tears.
210
Don't eat too much, she whispered to them.
211
They will cook you.
212
The pigs just made pig noises.
213
They did not understand.
214
Haku gave her something important.
215
He had kept her old clothes safe after she started her job.
216
It was the only thing she had from her world.
217
Inside a pocket, there was a card.
218
Her friend had given it to her.
219
The card said, To Chihiro, I will miss you.
220
Haku looked at her.
221
Yubaba controls you with your name, he said.
222
She took my name a long time ago.
223
I cannot remember my real name now.
224
He held her hand gently.
225
But I remember your name.
226
It is Chihiro.
227
Sen felt a little stronger.
228
Her real name was a small light inside her.
229
She had a secret now.
230
She had to work very hard.
231
Lin showed her how to clean the big baths.
232
The work was difficult and dirty.
233
Other spirits were not friendly to her.
234
She was a human.
235
They thought she smelled bad.
236
She ate her meals alone.
237
Every day was long and hard.
238
One rainy evening, a strange guest arrived, and he came for a bath.
239
It was a spirit covered in dark, smelly mud.
240
He was very big and moved slowly.
241
Everyone called him the stink spirit.
242
No one wanted to help him.
243
They ran away from the bad smell.
244
Yubaba looked at Sen.
245
The witch smiled.
246
It was the kind of smile that enjoys seeing others in trouble.
247
Sen, you will wash this guest, the witch commanded.
248
It was more than a command.
249
It was a test.
250
In this world, a useless worker could easily disappear.
251
The other workers laughed.
252
Sen was afraid, but she did her job.
253
Her hands were shaking.
254
She led the stink spirit to the biggest bathroom.
255
The mud was deep and thick.
256
He gave her a special ticket for the best soap.
257
The water poured into the tub.
258
It washed some of the mud away.
259
Sen felt something hard in the spirit's side.
260
It was like a big thorn.
261
She pulled on it.
262
The thorn was very big and stuck.
263
Yubaba saw it.
264
She realized this was not a stink spirit.
265
Everyone, help her, the witch shouted.
266
All the workers pulled on the thorn together.
267
They used a strong rope.
268
With a huge pull, it came out.
269
It was an old rusty bicycle.
270
Then more trash came out.
271
Bottles and old junk poured from the spirit.
272
The mud washed away completely.
273
The spirit was not a stink spirit.
274
He was a powerful river spirit.
275
His face was like an old kind man.
276
He had a long white beard.
277
The river spirit was clean.
278
He laughed a deep, happy laugh.
279
The sound filled the whole bathhouse.
280
He gave Sen a special gift.
281
It was a small, bitter -smelling ball of medicine.
282
Then he flew away into the night sky.
283
Gold dust fell from the sky.
284
All the workers were happy.
285
Yubaba was very happy.
286
Sen had done a very good job.
287
That night, Sen had a bad dream.
288
She dreamed about Haku.
289
He was hurt and bleeding.
290
When she woke up, she saw something outside her window.
291
A white dragon was flying in the sky.
292
He was attacked by many small paper birds.
293
The dragon was bleeding real blood.
294
Sen knew it was Haku.
295
He was a dragon spirit.
296
The dragon flew into Yubaba's rooms.
297
Sen followed him without thinking.
298
Her only thought was to save Haku.
299
She ran up the stairs to the top floor, but the hallways were full of noise and greedy spirits.
300
A strange guest stood in her path.
301
It was no face.
302
Earlier, Sen had seen him standing alone in the rain.
303
She felt sorry for the quiet spirit, so she had left a door open for him.
304
He was now making gold from his hands.
305
He offered Sen a lot of gold, but her mind was only on Haku.
306
I have to go, she said.
307
I am busy.
308
The spirit seemed sad and confused.
309
He did not understand why she said no. Sen pushed past the crowd.
310
She finally reached Yubaba's rooms.
311
She found Haku.
312
He was very hurt.
313
Yubaba's giant baby was there.
314
He wanted to play with Sen.
315
He was very strong and lonely.
316
She managed to escape from him.
317
She saw Haku.
318
He was close to a deep hole.
319
Yubaba was not there, but Sen understood her cruel rule.
320
A servant who failed and caused trouble was thrown away.
321
The workers were ready to push him into the dark hole.
322
Suddenly, a paper bird turned into another person.
323
The witch looked exactly like Yubaba, but the witch said, I am Zaniba.
324
I am Yubaba's twin sister.
325
She was very angry.
326
That dragon stole my special golden seal, she said.
327
It is a seal that holds a witch's power.
328
Zaniba's magic was powerful.
329
She turned Yubaba's baby into a small mouse.
330
She also turned a servant into a fake baby.
331
The dragon used his last bit of strength.
332
He hit the magic paper bird.
333
Zaniba's image disappeared.
334
The magic was broken, but the dragon was too weak to fly.
335
He had no strength left.
336
He fell into the deep hole below.
337
Sen and the little mouse held on to him, and they fell together.
338
Haku was still a dragon.
339
He flew them out of the hole.
340
They went to Komaji's boiler room.
341
Haku was very sick.
342
The golden seal had a powerful curse.
343
This dark magic was now inside Haku.
344
It made him very sick from the inside.
345
Sen remembered her gift.
346
She had the medicine from the river spirit.
347
She gave half of the medicine to Haku.
348
The dragon coughed.
349
It was a terrible sound.
350
He coughed up the golden seal.
351
He also coughed up a small black slug.
352
Sen stepped on the slug with her foot.
353
It was the curse.
354
Haku was still very weak, but the dark magic was gone.
355
He turned back into his boy form.
356
The curse was gone, but the golden seal was still in Haku's hand.
357
Sen looked at it, and she finally understood everything.
358
Yubaba had forced Haku to steal the seal.
359
He was not a thief.
360
He was only a servant following a cruel order.
361
Sen knew this was not over.
362
The seal's powerful owner was still angry.
363
Sen knew what she had to do.
364
She had to return the seal to Zaniba.
365
It was the only way to ask for forgiveness and truly save Haku.
366
She had to say sorry for Haku.
367
Kamaji gave her special train tickets.
368
He told her where Zaniba lived.
369
It was a long journey.
370
Before she left, Lin came to her.
371
Lin told her about No Face.
372
The spirit was now a huge monster.
373
He was eating the workers.
374
Yubaba wanted Sen to stop him.
375
Sen went to no face.
376
He was enormous.
377
He had eaten many things.
378
He offered her more gold and food.
379
He wanted her to be happy.
380
She did not want them.
381
My friends and parents are more important, she said.
382
She gave him the last half of the medicine.
383
The monster began to throw up.
384
He threw up all the food and the people.
385
He became very angry.
386
He started to chase Sen.
387
She ran to the train station.
388
The monster followed her.
389
He threw up everything.
390
The angry monster disappeared.
391
He became his small, quiet self again.
392
He was calm now.
393
The train came.
394
It moved on top of the quiet water.
395
Sen got on the train.
396
She let no face come with her.
397
The little mouse was with her, too.
398
The train moved across the big water.
399
It was quiet on the train.
400
For the first time in a long time, Sen could think.
401
She thought about her parents.
402
She thought about Haku.
403
She was not the same crying girl from the tunnel.
404
She had a mission now.
405
And she was not afraid anymore.
406
Haku woke up.
407
He felt much better.
408
He talked to Yubaba.
409
Your baby is gone, he said.
410
He is with Zaniba.
411
I can bring your baby back.
412
Yubaba was very worried about her baby.
413
She loved him very much.
414
Haku made a deal.
415
If I bring him back, he said, you must let Chihiro and her parents go free.
416
Yubaba agreed to the deal.
417
She looked at Haku with her sharp eyes.
418
She thought, the girl will never pass my final test anyway.
419
Sen, no face, and the mouse reached Zaniba's house.
420
It was a small, cozy cottage.
421
Zaniba was not scary like her sister.
422
She was kind and warm.
423
Sen gave back the golden seal.
424
She said she was sorry.
425
Zaniba was not angry.
426
She had forgiven Haku already.
427
She invited them inside for tea.
428
Over tea, Sen told Zaniba everything.
429
She talked about Haku, her parents, and her stolen name.
430
Zeniba listened with a kind face.
431
She told Sen that magic cannot solve everything.
432
She said that
433
Sen's friends could help her.
434
Everything will be all right, she said with a smile.
435
Soon Haku arrived.
436
He was a beautiful white dragon again.
437
He was healthy and strong.
438
Zaniba was happy to see him.
439
She told No -Face he could stay with her.
440
He could be her helper.
441
No -Face was happy.
442
He had finally found a home.
443
Haku flew Sen and the little mouse back to the bathhouse.
444
They flew through the dark night sky the wind was soft in Sen's hair.
445
She held on to the dragon's back.
446
The dragon flew strong and gentle.
447
She felt completely safe, like she was being carried and protected.
448
Suddenly, this feeling brought back a very old and deep memory.
449
She remembered a river from her childhood.
450
She had fallen into a river when she was very young.
451
The river had saved her life.
452
Its name was the Kohaku River.
453
She told this to the dragon.
454
Haku, she said.
455
Your real name is the Kohaku River.
456
The dragon's body began to change.
457
The white scales disappeared and the shape of a boy appeared.
458
Tears were in his eyes.
459
He remembered his name.
460
He was free from Yubaba's control forever.
461
His real name was Kohaku.
462
You saved me, Chihiro, he said, and I saved you.
463
They arrived at the bathhouse.
464
Kohaku gave the baby mouse back to Yubaba.
465
He changed back into the giant baby.
466
Yubaba was very happy.
467
She had to keep her promise.
468
But she had one last test for Sen.
469
All the workers gathered.
470
Yubaba showed Sen a group of 12 pigs.
471
Your parents are in this group, the witch said.
472
Find them.
473
If you are correct, you are free.
474
Sen looked at the pigs very carefully.
475
They all looked a lot the same.
476
They were big and fat.
477
She looked for a long, quiet time.
478
Then she had an answer.
479
After working so hard in the spirit world, she knew one thing.
480
She knew the smell of fear and the smell of greed.
481
These pigs only smelled of greed.
482
She said it out loud.
483
My parents are not in this group.
484
Yubaba was shocked.
485
The magic contract paper in the air broke into dust.
486
The magic was gone.
487
You are correct, Yubaba said.
488
She was not happy about it, but Sen was free.
489
The other spirits cheered for her.
490
Your parents will not remember anything, Kohaku said softly.
491
That is the rule for humans who eat the food of the spirits.
492
He took her hand.
493
He led her back to the green field.
494
The town looked empty again.
495
Her parents were waiting for her.
496
They looked normal.
497
They did not remember anything at all. Where were you?
