Here it is, Draw My Life.
2
I had a tough time making this because,
3
well, I have to tell my entire life story under 20 minutes.
4
I can barely remember what I did yesterday.
5
So this will be a very brief summary of my life.
6
I would love to get more in depth,
7
but we can save that for another time.
8
So, let's get drawing!
9
There are 7 billion people in this world,
10
meaning there are 7 billion stories to be told told.
11
But today,
12
I'm going to tell you one story from someone who was born in this tiny town in Massachusetts called Boston
13
or Bastin, AKA Beantown.
14
January 1987, it was snowing and my mother and father were driving.
15
At this time, my mother was six months pregnant
16
and she asked my father what my name should be and they both decided on Michelle.
17
However, My mom looked over at him and asked,
18
well, what about her Vietnamese name?
19
He looked out the window and saw this beautiful snowflake and he said,
20
Duy C Bằng, which means avalanche.
21
Thanks dad for naming me after something so terrifying.
22
Hi, my name is avalanche and I could potentially kill you.
23
Nice to meet you.
24
So that's me, an avalanche.
25
Four months later, I was born.
26
Year of the rabbit.
27
My welcome party was lovely.
28
My mother told me that when she brought me home and placed me in my crib,
29
my brother thought I was a toy so he literally jumped and slammed himself on top of me.
30
Apparently I stopped breathing and my mother thought I died.
31
Anyways, that's how I first met my amazing brother, Steve.
32
A few years later, we all packed up and moved to California.
33
Now if you don't know this landmark,
34
this is the Golden Gate Bridge and it's located in San Francisco.
35
This is where we moved.
36
Alright, so I'm going to draw my family portrait.
37
This is my mom, her name is Hieng which means gentle one in Vietnamese,
38
myself, Michelle or Avalanche, my brother Steve,
39
and of course my wonderful father.
40
We were a very loving family.
41
While living in San Francisco,
42
we moved several different times,
43
at least over six times in one year.
44
I remember packing and moving,
45
and at first I thought it was fun,
46
but later I found out it was because my father had a gambling addiction.
47
He was a very loving father,
48
but his weakness was playing poker.
49
It was so bad that he would gamble all our rent money and we would get evicted.
50
That's why we kept moving.
51
It broke my mother's heart.
52
I'll never forget seeing my mother cry.
53
I realized at a very early age that I couldn't wait to grow up so I could help her.
54
Because we moved so often,
55
I ended up going to several different schools in one year.
56
So it was hard for me to make friends because not only was I shy,
57
but I was always the new girl.
58
Luckily, I had an imagination.
59
And I drew a lot.
60
Disney princesses were one of my favorite things to draw.
61
I wanted to be just like them.
62
Oakland, California.
63
This is where I made my first friend.
64
I finally felt like I belonged.
65
It was a wonderful feeling and I remember I had so much fun.
66
You never forget the first friend you make.
67
I will never forget her.
68
Sadly it didn't last long.
69
My father told us that we had to move again and I never saw her again.
70
But it's okay.
71
You guys are now my friends.
72
So we were on the road again.
73
We packed all our things in a van and drove out to Florida.
74
He said we would be moving next to Disney World and we could see Mickey.
75
Later we found out that,
76
well, that's Orlando, that's where Disney World is at,
77
and we are right there, Tampa.
78
Womp womp.
79
Not really close to Orlando,
80
but my first day at school was pretty hard.
81
I never felt so different in my life.
82
There wasn't a lot of Asian people at my school,
83
and my classmates, they made fun of me, calling me names.
84
Man, kids can be so cruel.
85
But it's okay.
86
I found something else that made me smile.
87
It was drawing.
88
I draw superheroes all day in class.
89
I even created a superhero version of myself.
90
I seriously thought that when I grew up, I would have superpowers.
91
One morning I woke up and I noticed that my father was missing.
92
My mother was so heartbroken.
93
I didn't know why my father left.
94
But every night, I would wait for him to come back.
95
He never did.
96
However we carried on, my mother is a strong woman,
97
and she found a way to take care of us.
98
We were happy.
99
We didn't have much, but we had each other.
100
My mother was a bombshell.
101
It didn't take her long to finally remarry.
102
And we were so excited because now, we had a stepdad.
103
We were so happy to finally have a father again.
104
A year later, my little sister was born.
105
Steve and I were overjoyed to have a little sister.
106
And I was excited to be a big sister.
107
And her name is Christine.
108
I loved her so much.
109
I was never happy when I was home.
110
Turns out, my stepdad wasn't the father I dreamt of.
111
This is something I'd rather not talk about.
112
But my mother was the best.
113
She loved me so much and one Christmas I'll never forget.
114
I got the very I've always wanted a Sailor Moon doll.
115
It was everything to me.
116
The second thing I wanted was this Barbie dream house
117
But my family couldn't afford it which was totally fine
118
because I made my own dream house out of cardboard box I cut out a door a window
119
and every day after school I couldn't wait to come home to play with my dolls.
120
It's funny how the best things in life are the most simple in Middle school.
121
I played the trumpet.
122
Oh, man my mom she nagged at me all the time she wished
123
that I could play the flute or a violin something
124
that was less loud than a trumpet high school I grew out of playing dolls instead I played games
125
when my parents were arguing I would either save the world
126
or become the world's greatest warrior I even picked up on manga art
127
and wrote and drew a lot of my own stories it was my only escape from reality.
128
See, we didn't have the internet so you guys today lucked out.
129
Gosh, teenage years, always so awkward.
130
I wanted to wear makeup so badly but my mother,
131
she wouldn't let me.
132
But little by little, she allowed me to wear a little bit of eyeliner
133
and then mascara and afterwards she let me wear colored lip gloss.
134
It was a pretty big deal for me.
135
I loved makeup so much because to me, it was like drawing.
136
It was on my own face.
137
Senior year of high school,
138
I couldn't take the hurt anymore.
139
My stepdad left a lot of scars that I'm still trying to heal from.
140
The heart can only take so much.
141
My mother said enough was enough and we all left him.
142
We packed up our things and went to find a new home.
143
It was just us again, but it felt right.
144
Just like old times.
145
We didn't know what was going to happen,
146
but we knew that we were going to walk together.
147
It wasn't easy.
148
We had to move a few times and at one point,
149
we could only afford to rent a bedroom from a family.
150
We all shared a bed and my brother would sleep on the floor.
151
My brother and I had to work to help out my mother.
152
It was tough but we made it through together as a family.
153
We were unbreakable.
154
A miracle happened.
155
I was able to attend college.
156
That meant I had to move an hour away from them and I was devastated.
157
I cried so much because it was my first time away from home.
158
And it also meant that I couldn't have my mom's pho as much.
159
Man, you cried too because it is so good.
160
My college gave out laptops to all the students.
161
I always dreamt of having my own laptop,
162
but I never thought I'd have one.
163
Well guess what, this was the laptop where I filmed my very first makeup tutorial.
164
I just wanted to show every girl out there how beautiful she was and how makeup can be their own superhero costume.
165
Batman, Superman, Spiderman, without their costumes,
166
they're still powerful, but it's their costume that tells the world that they're superheroes.
167
Anyways, I'd love to go more into details about how everything happened,
168
but this video would be two hours long,
169
so I'm just going to fast forward to today.
170
I now live in two cities,
171
one being New York, also known as the Big Apple, and Los Angeles.
172
I got my family a home where they're safe and happy.
173
My mother is as beautiful as ever and hasn't aged a day.
174
My little sister grew up so fast.
175
She's now a beautiful young lady.
176
As for my brother, being the awesome guy that he is,
177
found someone really special.
178
married a beautiful woman.
179
You might know her as, promise.
180
So everyone is happy and healthy.
181
As for me, well, let's just say I met someone very special in Paris.
182
This is another story that deserves to be told,
183
but I'll save that for another time.
184
But that's pretty much a brief summary of my story.
185
Even when times were tough,
186
my childlike spirit never died.
187
I found that very thing that takes me to a happy place.
188
It was art.
189
And to others, it could be music, writing, video games.
190
Whatever it is, finding that special thing will help move you forward.
191
Kind of like a lotus flower finding sunlight in muddy water.
192
When all odds are against it,
193
it will still rise up to bloom.
194
We all have a story to tell,
195
and we are all part of something beautiful.
196
To the world, you may be one person,
197
but to one person, you may be the world.
198
Every great dream begins with a dreamer,
199
and every dreamer has a story.
200
So don't settle for a happy ending,
201
because to be continued is way more fun.
202
And I'm wishing you the best on your story.
203
Good luck on the next chapter in your life.
