1
Well hello and welcome to this English lesson about cleaning.
2
I'm not sure this is going to be everyone's favorite topic.
3
I mean you'll probably enjoy learning the words but cleaning isn't something that everyone enjoys doing.
4
Uh but in this English lesson I'll teach you some words and phrases that you can use to talk about cleaning.
5
Um we usually do cleaning a little bit every day and then a lot more on Saturdays so it'll
6
of you when you do your cleaning and
7
if you're wondering what I mean by cleaning I'm talking about cleaning your house or cleaning your apartment.
8
So that's going to be the focus of today's English lesson.
9
We'll talk about the English words
10
and phrases you need to to know to be able to talk about cleaning your house or apartment.
11
So how do we talk about cleaning the house?
12
Well, we use the phrase to clean the house.
13
This is the general term we use when we talk about picking up after ourselves, washing things, getting everything tidy.
14
Sometimes your house gets messy and you need to clean your house.
15
Sometimes you need to clean the apartment.
16
We clean our house to a certain degree every day
17
and we clean it a lot better every Saturday but the time
18
when we clean the house the best is when we know people are coming over.
19
When we know we are going to have guests.
20
Uh we do a really good job of cleaning the house but that's the phrase we use in English.
21
We say oh I need to clean the house.
22
My mum is coming over tomorrow.
23
I need to clean the house.
24
My brother -in -law and sister -in -law are coming over tomorrow.
25
And we usually do this because the house is a mess.
26
I'm not sure if you are a messy person.
27
I'm kind of a messy person. So I.
28
try to keep things clean but when I'm busy I'm definitely a messy person
29
and then the house is a mess and this is how you would describe your house or apartment.
30
If you're a little before you clean it, you would say, oh, I need to clean my apartment.
31
It is a mess.
32
I need to clean my house.
33
It is a mess.
34
So you notice we say the house is a mess.
35
You could also say the house is messy.
36
That would work as well.
37
And if it's really bad, we say the house is a disaster.
38
Don't come over right now, mom.
39
The house is a disaster.
40
We need to clean the house first.
41
If you have little kids.
42
This is usually true.
43
In fact, after you clean your house, if you have little kids, just wait a few hours and then the house will be a disaster again.
44
So two ways we describe a messy house as we say the house is a mess.
45
house is messy or the house is a disaster.
46
And again you can use the possessive.
47
My house is a disaster.
48
Our house is a disaster.
49
During the summer.
50
Um our house is sometimes a disaster because Jen and I are very very busy.
51
And then when you get to the specifics you might need to clean a specific part of the house.
52
For kids usually we say you need to clean your room.
53
I also have this room.
54
This is my studio and it's kind of our living room.
55
And so we refer to this as my room.
56
So sometimes I'll say I need to clean my room because I have a visitor coming over.
57
In fact the person who edits my videos visited in June.
58
And so I said to Jen I because I don't want my editor to think I'm a messy person.
59
But when your room is a mess, when your room is a disaster, you need to clean.
60
your room.
61
And sometimes your house isn't really messy.
62
It's just a little bit messy.
63
just need to straighten up.
64
So when you straighten up it means like this person you put all the books in order.
65
Maybe there's a cup and a plate on your desk in your office at home.
66
You would bring that to the kitchen sink.
67
Um maybe there's just a few things on the counter in your kitchen and you put them in the cupboard.
68
But when you say straighten up it means that your isn't a total disaster.
69
It's relatively tidy and neat already and you just need to arrange a few things
70
and we have another phrase we use tidy up.
71
So you might just need to tidy up a little bit.
72
Uh this again means that maybe there's a few books out.
73
Maybe there's a couple things on your kitchen table.
74
Um when you tidy up or when you straighten up, it usually only takes about five or ten minutes.
75
Maybe you
76
by your entrance way or maybe you just put them all nice
77
and straight but sometimes you know that people are coming over and you'll say don't come right away.
78
I just need to tidy up or I just need to straighten up the house a little bit. And some specifics.
79
And I'm trying to put together phrases with verbs
80
and the thing the verb is modifying so that you can hear an English speaker say it.
81
Sometimes you just need to sweep the floor.
82
We sweep the floor after supper every night in the kitchen
83
and we sweep the floor in our entrance way and other places usually once a week.
84
But sometimes there's just a little bit of stuff on the floor and you need to sweep the
85
you need to mop the floor.
86
When you mop the floor you get some soap and water.
87
Some people use vinegar and water.
88
Some people use bleach and water.
89
Some people use some sort of cleaner mixed with water.
90
But you will use a mop and you will stick it in the bucket
91
and get it wet and then you will mop the floor.
92
After you mop the floor the floor is usually just a little bit wet for a while.
93
So when you sweep the floor it's But when you mop the floor, it's more of a wet activity.
94
You are making the floor a little bit wet.
95
as you clean it.
96
And then you might need to do the dishes or wash the dishes.
97
We do the dishes after supper every night.
98
We sometimes do the dishes after breakfast.
99
It depends on the time of year.
100
Yesterday I did the dishes three times.
101
I did the dishes after breakfast.
102
I did the dishes after lunch and I did the dishes after supper.
103
Um and I didn't have any help because Jen and the kids were all very very
104
for a few days and then you have to do two days worth of dishes.
105
And that could be a little bit annoying.
106
Thank you.
107
Sometimes you want to wash the windows.
108
This is something I need to do in my house because for some reason the windows are getting a little bit dirty.
109
This isn't something people do every week necessarily.
110
Some people might.
111
Uh in our house, we wash the windows once or twice a year and I'll be honest,
112
there's some windows in the second story that we've never washed but I should wash them someday.
113
Um if you haven't washed your windows recently, you should wash your windows surprised.
114
about how much easier it is to see through the windows, especially if you live in the city.
115
And sometimes you just need to shake out a rug, shake out the rug or shake out the mat.
116
And you're going to have to shake we have a mat a welcome mat outside our front door.
117
We also have a small rug inside of our front door in our entrance way.
118
And once a week we will take out that little rug
119
and we'll take it outside and we will shake out the rug.
120
Um and then we'll vacuum it afterwards
121
but we usually shake it out outside first because it has little pieces of mud or stone or other things on it.
122
So it's nice to go outside and shake out the rug.
123
and sometimes you need to clean the bathroom my least favorite job in the world is cleaning the toilet
124
But when you clean the bathroom, you will clean the mirror, you will clean the countertop, you will clean the sink, you will clean the toilet, you will clean the shower,
125
you will clean the bathtub if that's what you have.
126
So certainly when you want to clean your house, you will clean the bathroom.
127
You might do the laundry.
128
So part of keeping your house clean is to regularly do the laundry.
129
Or you could say wash your clothes.
130
I need to wash my clothes.
131
The most common phrase for me is to say I need to do the laundry.
132
This means getting all of your socks and underwear and pants
133
and shirts and putting them in a washing machine and then washing them using laundry detergent.
134
We do laundry quite often.
135
In fact, we do laundry almost every other day.
136
We do a load of laundry because there are six people living in this house.
137
So there is a lot of laundry to do.
138
And then you might put the laundry in a dryer.
139
You might have a dryer in your house, but we hang up the laundry.
140
So we put the laundry outside on a line and it dries in the sun and in the wind.
141
In the winter, we hang our clothes up.
142
Uh we hang up the laundry inside and it dries in our house inside of our house.
143
And sometimes you need to wipe the table.
144
So the action you take when you clean the table is you will wipe the table.
145
You will get a damp cloth.
146
You might say wet cloth but usually you make a cloth wet
147
and then you wring it out so that it's only damp.
148
You don't want the cloth to be dripping water or soapy water.
149
So you wipe the table with a damp cloth.
150
A few actions that you take when cleaning you might need to scrub.
151
When we use the word scrub we mean to use a brush and to rub something really hard back and forth.
152
This person is scrubbing the floor.
153
Uh you could scrub with a cloth as well.
154
Sometimes you'll get a face cloth and you'll scrub a kid's face if they are really dirty or muddy.
155
Um but usually heart and you scrub.
156
All right sometimes you dust so you will use a duster in order to dust this lady is dusting
157
and she is using a duster.
158
So we have the verb to dust
159
and then we have the object you use the duster and I'll talk about that a bit later.
160
But yes, as you go through time, there's just dust everywhere.
161
Like there's dust on my computer right now.
162
There's a bit of dust.
163
So I need to dust my office. And vacuum.
164
So the verb to vacuum.
165
You get a vacuum cleaner.
166
And you turn it on.
167
It makes a lot of noise and it sucks all of the dirt and other things into it.
168
And when you're done, the floor is clean.
169
So you might say I need to vacuum the floors in my house.
170
and I need to take care of that.
171
A few people that do cleaning.
172
So Jen and I don't have a house cleaner.
173
In my part of the world in English, a person who cleans a house is called a house cleaner.
174
Uh I know a couple of people who are house cleaners.
175
They're they clean other people's houses and they get paid for it.
176
You might also see the word housekeeper or made.
177
We don't use the word housekeeper in this area.
178
Um but they might in other English speaking parts of the world.
179
And we don't use the word made anymore.
180
Um we tend to use the word house cleaner or the term house cleaner.
181
So this person is probably someone who is paid to clean this house.
182
This person is a house of to have a house cleaner.
183
But I think it's better for Jen and I
184
and our kids to clean our own house
185
because number one it doesn't cost anything
186
and number two I think it's important for kids to learn how to clean up after themselves.
187
A person who works at a business though could be called a janitor or a custodian.
188
At school we have a janitor and their job is to keep the school clean.
189
Um I don't know the exact difference between janitor and custodian.
190
Some people will call that person a custodian.
191
Some people will call that person a janitor.
192
So a person who cleans, a business or a school or another building.
193
You might have someone who is a window washer.
194
Their only job is that they wash windows.
195
They might wash windows on skyscrapers.
196
That would scare me.
197
You need to go really high up in the air with ropes to clean the windows.
198
You can also see this person is using what's called a squeegee and I'll talk about that in a little bit.
199
But the person who cleans windows is a window washer.
200
You can also have your carpets clean.
201
So you can have a person who's called a carpet cleaner come and clean your carpets.
202
They will use a machine called a carpet cleaner and they will use a product called carpet cleaner.
203
So I thought this was kind of funny.
204
Sometimes people will have their carpets professionally cleaned.
205
They will pay a company to come with special machines called carpet cleaners.
206
Um so the carpet cleaner will come with a carpet cleaner to clean your carpets.
207
You can also rent a carpet cleaner.
208
You can go to a rental store.
209
They even have these at the grocery store and you can rent a machine called a carpet cleaner and you
210
And you will use something called carpet cleaner when you clean your carpets.
211
So if you use a machine like this, you might actually have this as well.
212
Yeah.
213
Let's talk a little bit about the things you use to clean
214
and I'm gonna go rather quickly through this section because I think it's fairly straightforward English vocabulary.
215
This is a mop.
216
You use a mop with a pail and with some soapy water to mop the floor and we talked about this earlier.
217
So a mop is a wet way to clean the floor.
218
When you use a mop, you might use a bucket or pail.
219
We use either word.
220
I need a bucket.
221
I need a pail.
222
I'm going to mop the floor.
223
Where's the bucket?
224
Where's the pail?
225
Thank you.
226
You might wear cleaning gloves.
227
I usually don't wear cleaning gloves when I clean.
228
I usually just use a cloth and clean but when I clean the toilet sometimes I wish I had cleaning gloves.
229
In fact, I might buy some.
230
Some people will wear cleaning gloves whenever they clean.
231
They will wear cleaning gloves to keep their hands.
232
clean while they clean.
233
Thank you.
234
And you might have a vacuum cleaner.
235
A vacuum cleaner again is used to vacuum the floors.
236
So this is a vacuum cleaner.
237
In fact this is one of the vacuum cleaners we have at school.
238
I'm not sure why his name is Henry but this is a vacuum cleaner.
239
and the vacuum cleaner will have attachments depending on what you are vacuuming you might put a small attachment
240
or a nozzle attachment or a small brush attachment there are lots of different attachments
241
that you can use when you are using the vacuum cleaner.
242
You in the vacuum cleaner there is a filter so you might need to change the vacuum cleaner filter.
243
Although someone mentioned earlier something called a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
244
We have a Dyson vacuum cleaner and there are no vacuum cleaner bags or filters that you have to worry about.
245
It's kind of cool.
246
You might use a duster and we saw a picture of someone dusting earlier.
247
So again you will use a duster to dust.
248
So you will dust using a duster.
249
It's nice to get all of the dust off of everything.
250
When you do dishes, you will most likely use a dish brush.
251
Some people will use a cloth when they do dishes.
252
Some people will use a dish brush.
253
Some people will use a sponge when they do dishes.
254
So when we do the dishes, we use a dish brush.
255
I know I've been to other people's houses where they use something called a sponge.
256
When they do the dishes, all of these things are great little tools to use.
257
when you are trying to keep your house clean.
258
When you sweep you use a broom.
259
You might also have a dustpan to go with the broom.
260
So you sweep the floor with the broom and
261
when you have all of the stuff that you've swept up in one spot you get a dustpan.
262
You get a dustpan.
263
You get a dustpan and then you sweep it into the dust pan.
264
So different than a mop, a broom is used.
265
Um it's a dry way to sweep to clean the floor.
266
So you would use a broom, put everything in dust pan and then dump the dust pan.
267
into the garbage or another place.
268
There's another thing called a Swiffer.
269
We do not have a Swiffer but this has become very common in a lot of people's houses.
270
A Swiffer I'm not sure if you can see it.
271
That's not the greatest.
272
It's a small.
273
It's a small.
274
It's a small.
275
It's a
276
but it's kind of like a mop
277
but it has a built -in container of cleaning solution
278
and you can pull the trigger and squirt it on the floor and then sweep it up.
279
It's kind of like a modern mop I guess I would call it.
280
Um I think that uh using a Swiffer would be cool but we don't have one.
281
We just mop the floor.
282
That seems to work best for us.
283
I've mentioned squeegee a couple of times in this lesson.
284
I had to check five times if I was spelling this correctly.
285
This is how you spell squeegee.
286
This is how you spell squeegee.
287
This A squeegee is a thin...
288
probably rubber tool with a handle that you use
289
when you're cleaning glass or a mirror and it helps you to wipe away the water and soap.
290
So that is a squeegee.
291
Squeegee.
292
It's probably a hard word to say for some of you but when you clean windows it's nice to have a squeegee.
293
Sometimes you'll just use a cloth.
294
You might just call it a a a kitchen cloth, a cleaning cloth, but it's usually we just say cloth.
295
I'm going to use a cloth to clean the counter.
296
I'm going to wipe the table with a cloth.
297
Maybe you'll just use rags.
298
Jen and I keep rags in our bathroom cupboard.
299
Usually our rags are from old t shirts.
300
When we have a t -shirt that gets a hole in it, we'll cut it up into rags and we will use the rags to do some cleaning.
301
if I was going to wash my car I might grab a few rags to wash my car.
302
So rags usually are just old.
303
pieces of clothing that you use for cleaning.
304
Sometimes you might use paper towels.
305
So we have paper towels in our kitchen.
306
We don't use them very often but if someone spills some milk
307
or spills some orange juice we will grab a paper towel
308
and we will wipe up the spill and then we usually put the paper towels in the compost because they are compostable.
309
So we don't throw them in the garbage if we use them.
310
And we just have something called cleaner.
311
This is the general term for anything you use to clean.
312
You might use water.
313
You might use soap and water or you might use something like this.
314
This is Mr. Clean or Monsieur Net.
315
En Francais.
316
Monsieur Net.
317
See it must be a Canadian package.
318
Mr. Clean.
319
This is a product that has some cleaning chemicals in it and it usually smells like lemon.
320
I think you can see the lemons on Thank you container.
321
Yes, right under his face are some lemons.
322
But yes, you will use a cleaner to clean your house.
323
Um, I forgot to mention toilet brush when I was talking about things you use.
324
A toilet brush is a special brush that you use to clean the toilet.
325
So we have a toilet brush beside each toilet.
326
We have two toilets in our house, two bathrooms.
327
And we use the toilet brush to clean our toilet.
328
and we use toilet bowl cleaner to clean our toilet.
329
So this is a special type of cleaner.
330
So you might have a general purpose cleaner or an all purpose cleaner.
331
But this is a specific cleaner made for cleaning toilets.
332
And this is exactly the kind we use.
333
We usually buy a pack of four and it takes us about a year to get through them.
334
But we use toilet bowl cleaner to clean our toilets.
335
Um when you wash your car, you might use a car brush, a special brush designed for cleaning your car.
336
Um we don't usually wash our vehicles.
337
If we do, we actually go to a car wash. in town.
338
Not the kind you drive through though.
339
This is a car wash that you drive through or it pulls your vehicle through.
340
We go to a car wash where they just have some car brushes and some pressure washers.
341
Some special hoses that you can use.
342
But again we don't wash our vehicles very often.
343
Sometimes we go down a muddy road and we might go and wash our car after that.
344
So car wash and then last slide here what we all love Even if we don't like cleaning,
345
I think everyone loves a house that is neat and tidy.
346
I said this a couple of times in this lesson.
347
I don't like cleaning.
348
But I love the feeling I get when I'm done cleaning.
349
I like a house that's neat and tidy.
350
When my desk where I work is neat and tidy, I'm happy.
351
When the kitchen is neat and tidy, I'm happy.
352
So like a day like yesterday, I worked really hard to keep the kitchen neat and tidy all day because I knew I had to make breakfast,
353
lunch, and supper for my kids because Jen was gone.
354
And so I kept it neat and tidy.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Free English Class! Topic: Cleaning! ๐Ÿงน๐Ÿงบ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ (Lesson Only)" using the Shadowing technique โ€” a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker โ€” not just repeating words. With 15โ€“30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud โ€” like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1โ€“2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency โ€” making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
