Music When looking at the different views and determining what is a height,
2
a depth, and a length or width may be challenging.
3
The ASME, or American Society of Mechanical Engineers, has created a standard for height,
4
length, width, and depth dimensions.
5
Here is how you determine what these dimensions actually are.
6
Depth is the distance between the front of the object and the back of the object.
7
Think of it this way.
8
If the front of the object is right here in front of us, the back of the object is farther away or deeper.
9
The depth distance can't be seen from the front view,
10
but it can be seen from the top view and the right side view.
11
The height is the distance between the top of the object and the bottom of the object.
12
Height is the vertical distance from the top of the part to the bottom of the part

and can be seen in the front view and in the right side view.

and the left side of the object.

The length or width can be seen in the front view and it can be seen in the top view.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Height, Length/Width, and Depth dimensions on blueprints" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
