Shadowing Practice: Learn Real-Life English: Life with a Newborn - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creating lesson...
1
Hello.
2
This is not an English lesson.
3
This is learning English with real life.
4
And we think that's the best way.
5
So today I've got my beautiful wife Ingrid and my beautiful baby daughter Abigail.
6
She's sleeping.
7
You guys can meet her in a later video.
8
But my lovely wife and I, we are going to tell you guys in a nice, calm, real life English about what it's been like
9
the last three weeks being new parents are you ready
10
so let's talk about what labor was like
11
and what labor is guys is
12
when a mother is having the baby okay she's having pain in her stomach
13
and it's one of the hardest but most beautiful things
14
that a woman will ever experience
15
so i can't tell you guys what labor was like i can tell you what it looked like for me
16
but let's hear what my wife has to say about labor okay
17
so I don't know where to start um I was hoping
18
that it wasn't that bad how people always say
19
because you can just hear bad experience from other women like oh
20
that was terrifying like that was crazy painful that was like even traumatic.
21
Traumatic?
22
Traumatic.
23
And of course, I was afraid of those things, but I was like, no, that there has to be a way that it can it can be better.
24
You know, like I read so much.
25
I watched so much, so many videos.
26
So I pray so much.
27
I ask God, like, please give me a different story
28
that I can share with other women that it can give them hope in some way, you know, because I want to be that person who has a different story
29
and know like the bad and bad and bad.
30
And that's how it was, guys.
31
But of course, I won't say it wasn't painful.
32
It was.
33
But when you are in a situation that is stressful and like painful and things like that,
34
I think it's normal to feel like the time is longer
35
but my my i don't know my story was different
36
because i asked i told my husband like
37
that was like one hour in pain for me in my brain
38
but it was actually i don't need like eight hours maybe
39
but like painful painful was like four hours you know like the real deal
40
but i want to know from your point of view
41
so guys it went by fast for me too
42
and she was in a lot of pain for a long time
43
but she was very strong there were some times where she
44
said i can't do this i can't do this i need a break
45
and when i saw she was starting to like lose her control i told her breathe for me baby breathe
46
and we focused on long deep slow breaths and then she got back into that That's true.
47
Like meditation and back into the zone focused.
48
And she was so strong, guys.
49
My point of view was I had no idea my wife could be that strong.
50
And especially at the time where you have to push the baby out, she was
51
so strong let's let's talk about what was the funniest moment was there anything funny in all of
52
that because I have one that was funny we didn't know it was funny
53
while it was happening but
54
if we had been somebody else looking at would have been hilarious she almost squeezed my head off guys so
55
while she was pushing for this she was holding on to
56
my neck like this i could feel my face turning purple she was squeezing
57
so hard guys my neck and my head um
58
and i felt like i used to do jujitsu
59
so i know what it's like somebody choking you she was choking me guys very hard wow how strong was
60
that it was strong because she was pushing so hard
61
but i just had to be strong and not say anything and take it because she needed me right there.
62
She needed my strength.
63
So what have these first couple weeks actually been like?
64
Because I thought, you know, I haven't been to work in two weeks now, and I thought being home with them was going to be much easier than being at work,
65
but it turns out I've been working way harder here than I've ever worked at my job.
66
So what is different from how you thought it would be to how it actually is these first couple of weeks.
67
I think for me it's like the, I don't know, the hormones are, you know, all over the place for me.
68
And, you know, like I get very sensitive if she don't want to eat or I get very like,
69
you know, anxious sometimes, but it's normal because the hormones and all of those things.
70
But I think like I knew it was hard to have a newborn, but yeah, Sometimes it feels harder.
71
So not having time to eat and go to the bathroom when you want and take a shower.
72
I have it because I have pen, but if I don't have pen, it would be crazy, impossible.
73
Another thing, guys, that you need to be ready for if you're going to have a baby, really work with your partner.
74
Because if we weren't working together as a team, neither one of us would have slept at all since we've been home from the hospital.
75
But because we work together, I'll stay up with the baby for four or six hours.
76
Then she'll take care of the baby while I go sleep for a few hours.
77
But if you're not working together as a team and giving each other time, you're not going to sleep at all.
78
No sleep.
79
And that's very hard.
80
Okay, guys.
81
Abby woke up.
82
Abby is what we call Abigail.
83
That's her nickname.
84
And a nickname is a shorter version of your name that your family and friends call you.
85
So I think Abby wanted to say hi.
86
Abby says, are you ready to learn some real life English with comprehensive plan put?
87
Well good, let's go.
88
Abigail is hungry guys so she's going to eat while we finish the video.
89
So what are some things that nobody tells you to be ready for
90
when you have a new baby that you found out?
91
I don't know.
92
I think like the crying part, like you can't eventually it's gonna happen.
93
Like I thought it just some babies, you know, some babies get more fuzzy.
94
But the true guys, i think is every baby get very fussy sometimes
95
and you need to be strong to handle that
96
so fussy means crying and there's nothing you could do to help yeah like no reason right
97
so this happened to us last night guys for like two hours
98
or more three hours she was screaming we couldn't feed her
99
her diaper was clean there was nothing else we could do guys
100
so finally i took her in my car
101
and drove around put her in her little car seat and
102
that finally got her to stop so guys you know you think like okay
103
if they're crying something's wrong i could fix it i'll give her her bottle or i'll change her diaper
104
but sometimes there's nothing you can do and my wife
105
and i were talking how good that we have each other in this moment
106
because imagine if you're just a young woman all alone nobody to help you
107
and your baby's screaming for three hours
108
and you haven't slept in three days yeah oh that's the
109
the other part nobody told me you know like you're not
110
gonna like you know oh you're not gonna sleep good
111
but not like this like i every night my best sleep like what four hours three hours
112
and like how you say like two hours you are awake
113
and then later to another two hours again
114
because i have him otherwise it would be impossible she wakes up every 40 minutes every 30 minutes every hour
115
but no more than that.
116
She doesn't sleep more than that yet.
117
Another thing, guys, about sleeping is babies are loud even while they sleep.
118
That's so funny.
119
So you think like, oh, I could just sleep while she's napping.
120
But when she's sleeping, she's making noises like, She sounds like that sometimes while she's napping.
121
So try and sleep when your baby's doing that.
122
You think something's wrong with her.
123
it's hard and it takes a
124
while to adjust to this is called burping a baby
125
and she pats her back she pats her on the back
126
and the gases in her stomach there you go can come out she did it yeah see
127
and then the baby feels better sometimes they'll stop crying i
128
just want to talk real quick about has this changed our relationship well yeah i mean not
129
because we want to you know What relationship?
130
We haven't been together like sleeping in the same bed since she was born.
131
Because we need to take turns.
132
So that means I take the night shift, she takes the day shift or the other way around.
133
But that means I have to take care of her for a while so she could sleep.
134
Then she has to take care of her so I can sleep.
135
But we can't sleep together anymore.
136
And I love holding my wife while I sleep.
137
So we really miss that.
138
Yeah, but I know it's going to be better, you know.
139
It's not going to be like this forever.
140
So that's the only thing you need to keep in mind.
141
It's like if there's a bad day, it's not going to be like that every day.
142
And it's going to, the time is going to pass, you know. So, yeah.
143
So it's been hard, you know.
144
I wouldn't even say it's been hard on a relationship because I love you more than I've ever loved you.
145
Me too, I'm like.
146
Honestly, guys, in the hospital, I've never loved and respected her so much,
147
but it is hard not to be able to sit on the couch with her
148
and watch a movie and just be together.
149
We always have this little thing in between us now.
150
But like my wife said, we have to remember, this is just a small piece of time
151
and we have a new member of the family for the rest of our lives
152
so it's worth it
153
but these next these first few weeks are hard where do
154
you see the next year of our life how do you think our life will be
155
so different in the next year than it was in the
156
last five together i can't even think about it i don't know i don't know
157
so when i think about that I think about traveling now.
158
Like, traveling right now would be impossible.
159
Like, there's no way we could take this baby on a plane
160
and then she screams for three hours and there's nothing we could do.
161
I mean, you could, but it would be terrible for everybody on the plane.
162
The whole plane would be looking at us like this and we'd be like, well, what do you want us to do?
163
It's a baby.
164
So guys, the next year, you know, as she's growing up might be difficult,
165
but I'm really looking forward to watching her grow and giving her a much better childhood than we had.
166
And, you know, our parents loved us and everything and did the best they could.
167
But from all that we've learned and done, I can't wait to see her have the opportunities that we never dreamed of.
168
This baby's going to be on a plane before she's a year old.
169
This baby's going to leave the country, you know, and have a passport when she's three.
170
And this baby's going to see her mom and dad doing awesome things.
171
and things that we would have never dreamed of growing up in simple families.
172
So we're excited to watch her grow, and you guys will be able to share a little bit of
173
that process because you know on this channel I share my real life to help you learn real-life English.
174
Anything else you want to say, baby?
175
Besides everything, I'm happy to have the beautiful baby.
176
Yeah, I'm just so excited for the future
177
and see her like how she's gonna look like
178
because it's different to see a newborn and then
179
when they are two like they are toddlers you know toddler toddler they look
180
so different so i'm excited to see her face
181
so newborn is what we call a baby
182
that is newly born she was just born
183
and i think you call them
184
that up until they're like three months old two two months
185
so we have newborn for another month hopefully things will get easier
186
and we'll be able to get more and more sleep
187
but i just want to make this little video
188

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Learn Real-Life English: Life with a Newborn" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
