- “It was fine, thank you.” – A simple, polite response (even if the trip wasn’t perfect!).
- “Did you [visit/eat/see] [something]?” – Asking about specific activities.
- “No, I didn’t [do something].” – Negative responses that flow naturally.
- “Actually, no.” – A casual way to correct a misunderstanding.
- “That doesn’t sound like a very nice [vacation/trip].” – Reacting to someone’s story.
These phrases work in almost any trip-related chat—copy them, practice them, and watch your confidence grow!
Fix Your Weak Spots: Rhythm and Intonation
One common challenge? Making questions sound natural. In the dialogue, questions like “Did you visit lots of museums?” rise in tone at the end, while statements like “I went to London for business” fall. This is where shadowing comes in! Use a shadowing app or shadowing site to mimic the speaker’s rhythm—repeat lines aloud, matching their speed and tone. Try “shadowspeak” (repeating immediately after the video) to train your mouth and ears. You’ll notice a difference in days: your speech will sound less “scripted” and more like a native’s.

What is the Shadowing Technique?
Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
