1
I'm Emily and I'm really happy you're here with me today.
2
Let me ask you something.
3
Do you ever think about a small thing and then suddenly, you're thinking about it for hours?
4
Maybe you sent a message to a friend but they didn't reply.
5
At first, you think maybe they're busy, but after a few minutes, you start thinking, did I say something wrong?
6
Or are they upset with me?
7
And before you know it, your mind has created a whole story.
8
That's overthinking.
9
Overthinking is when we think about something again and again, especially when we don't really need to.
10
Sometimes we worry about things that haven't even happened yet.
11
For example, imagine you have an important meeting tomorrow.
12
You might start thinking, what if I make a mistake?
13
What if people don't like my idea?
14
What if I forget what I want to say?
15
You think about every possible problem before the meeting even begins.
16
And the funny thing is, when the meeting finally happens, everything might go perfectly.
17
But our minds can be very creative, especially when we're worried.
18
Another example, have you ever talked to someone and then thought about the conversation later?
19
You might say, why did I say that?
20
I should have said something different.
21
Maybe the other person didn't even think it was a big deal.
22
But you keep replaying the conversation in your head.
23
I think we all do this sometimes.
24
So how can we stop overthinking? first ask yourself, is this actually happening or am I imagining in it?
25
This question can help you separate facts from fears.
26
Second, remember that you don't have to know everything.
27
Sometimes we want to know exactly what will happen tomorrow, next week, or next month.
28
But life doesn't work that way.
29
It's okay not to have all the answers.
30
And third, focus on what you can control.
31
You can't control what other people think, But you can control how you respond.
32
If you made a mistake, learn from it.
33
If someone didn't reply to your message, give them time.
34
If something hasn't happened yet, don't spend all your energy worrying about it.
35
And most importantly, be kind to yourself.
36
Instead of saying, I always make mistakes, say, I made a mistake and I can learn from it.
37
Instead of thinking, what if everything goes wrong?
38
Ask yourself, what if everything goes right?
39
Sometimes, we spend so much time worrying about tomorrow that we forget to enjoy today.
40
So, the next time you catch yourself overthinking, take a deep breath and remind yourself, not every thought needs an answer.
41
Sometimes, you just need to breathe.
42
Relax and say, I'll deal with it when the time comes.
43
Thank you so much for spending these few minutes with me today.
44
I hope this episode helped you practice your English and gave you something positive to think about.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Why Do We Overthink Everything? 🤔" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
