1
Peace be with you, friends.
2
We're reading this week as last week from the 10th chapter of Matthew's Gospel.
3
And you know, I mentioned last week that though the primary stress in the Gospels is on who Jesus is, look at our great creeds.
4
We don't talk about his teaching at all.
5
We talk about who he is.
6
But I said, and I'll say it again, it doesn't mean we ignore his teaching.
7
I mean, on the contrary.
8
It's because of who he is that we take his teaching with such seriousness.
9
And his teaching is, as always, astonishing.
10
To say, oh, he just echoes with all the great spiritual teachers.
11
Well, there are points of contact, of course.
12
There are points of overlap.
13
But Jesus teaching everybody is strange.
14
And if we don't get that, if we say, "Oh, Jesus teaching is, you know, it's nice to be nice," or, you know, "be nice to people, love your neighbor," well, that's pretty superficial.
15
Unless his teaching takes your breath away, you're probably not really getting it.
16
So last week we heard him say to his disciples, "Fear nobody." And I suggested, I mean, who would take that seriously?
17
How could you possibly go through life not fearing anybody?
18
fear is a big part of human life, and people use our fears to manipulate us.
19
So, that's why they're, you know, fearsome.
20
Well, I can say that if I made a conversion, a metanoia, a transition from the body,
21
right, the relatively superficial dimension of my life, to the soul, the depth dimension.
22
Standing there, I mentioned last week, you could say, like Martin Luther King, the end of his life, I'm not fearing anybody.
23
I've been to the mountaintop.
24
You could be in Teresa of Avila's interior castle, the place of safety, even as, you know, havoc is being wreaked all around you,
25
but you're in the interior castle.
26
So, that was last week's teaching.
27
You know, something I wanted to mention then, I'll do it now.
28
Look how much of our culture is predicated upon safety.
29
being safe, safe spaces, feeling threatened, and we can't have anybody challenging us, and we have to retreat into our safe place.
30
"Fear nobody," Jesus says.
31
To live in this sort of constant fear is an anti -spiritual attitude.
32
It means that we are preoccupied with the goods of the body that we might lose.
33
Metanoia means you move to a deeper place.
34
Okay, that's really what I said.
35
last week.
36
I bring it up again because in many ways the teaching today is making the same point, but using kind of a different approach or a different image.
37
Last week was fear, things I'm afraid of losing.
38
This week it's detachment.
39
It's what's my relationship to the goods of the world to which I become perhaps inordinately attached.
40
Now, I want to be really careful.
41
as I commence this because, as I've said to you many times, Christianity, authentic Christianity, is not puritanical.
42
It doesn't set soul and body in stark opposition.
43
It doesn't put the spiritual and material in stark opposition.
44
No, no. Everything God made is good.
45
The ensemble of what he made is very good.
46
and that means the trees and the water and the mountains
47
and the sky and the planets and the sun it means The body, yes indeed, it means even insects that crawl upon the earth.
48
Genesis goes out of its way to say all these things are good.
49
Why?
50
Because many spiritual systems and religions play the dualistic game of, yeah, these material things are including my body.
51
They're real, but they're bad.
52
They're just a source of temptation, and the idea is to escape from that.
53
That's not biblical, Rather, think in terms of dimensions.
54
The soul is a kind of depth dimension of the person that includes the body.
55
Thomas Aquinas, in fact, said that.
56
The soul is in the body, not as contained by it, but rather as containing it.
57
That's the depth dimension of the self we call the soul.
58
Conversion is moving from this superficial dimension, the body, to this deeper place.
59
Okay, so we're not anti— We're not against the body, not against the world.
60
What are we against them?
61
turning anything in the world into the summum bonum, - Thank you.

68
All these things that come forth in this beautiful, I would call it liturgical procession from God, are indeed good. But watch.
69
They are creatures.
70
All these things mentioned in Genesis, from the moon and stars and planets to the earth to mountains to animals,
71
were all in different cultures at that time worshipped as gods, weren't they?
72
Genesis keeps saying, "No, no, no, no, no. These things are not gone." Beautiful,
73
good, very good, not sumum bonum.
74
So what's the problem?
75
Well, here's how St. Augustine put it, with typical pith.
76
"When I mistake a creature for the Creator, trouble ensues.
77
And look, I've been at this for a long time as a preacher, as a counselor, as a spiritual director.
78
That's one of the most basic insights you can find.
79
When you're working with someone and they're suffering,
80
they're struggling, Find the place where they have turned something creaturely into the creator.
81
They've taken something good from the world and made it the summum bonum.
82
See, that's where the trouble always is, spiritually speaking.
83
Okay, how does Jesus make this point?
84
Now, listen to his teaching and prepare to have your breath taken away.
85
Jesus said to his apostles, Thank you.
86
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.
87
and whoever loves son or daughter more than me.
88
is not worthy of me.
