Peace be with you, friends.
2
We're reading this week as last week from the 10th chapter of Matthew's Gospel.
3
And you know, I mentioned last week that though the primary stress in the Gospels is on who Jesus is, look at our great creeds.
4
We don't talk about his teaching at all.
5
We talk about who he is.
6
But I said, and I'll say it again, it doesn't mean we ignore his teaching.
7
I mean, on the contrary.
8
It's because of who he is that we take his teaching with such seriousness.
9
And his teaching is, as always, astonishing.
10
To say, oh, he just echoes with all the great spiritual teachers.
11
Well, there are points of contact, of course.
12
There are points of overlap.
13
But Jesus teaching everybody is strange.
14
And if we don't get that, if we say, "Oh, Jesus teaching is, you know, it's nice to be nice," or, you know, "be nice to people, love your neighbor," well, that's pretty superficial.
15
Unless his teaching takes your breath away, you're probably not really getting it.
16
So last week we heard him say to his disciples, "Fear nobody." And I suggested, I mean, who would take that seriously?
17
How could you possibly go through life not fearing anybody?
18
fear is a big part of human life, and people use our fears to manipulate us.
19
So, that's why they're, you know, fearsome.
20
Well, I can say that if I made a conversion, a metanoia, a transition from the body,
21
right, the relatively superficial dimension of my life, to the soul, the depth dimension.
22
Standing there, I mentioned last week, you could say, like Martin Luther King, the end of his life, I'm not fearing anybody.
23
I've been to the mountaintop.
24
You could be in Teresa of Avila's interior castle, the place of safety, even as, you know, havoc is being wreaked all around you,
25
but you're in the interior castle.
26
So, that was last week's teaching.
27
You know, something I wanted to mention then, I'll do it now.
28
Look how much of our culture is predicated upon safety.
29
being safe, safe spaces, feeling threatened, and we can't have anybody challenging us, and we have to retreat into our safe place.
30
"Fear nobody," Jesus says.
31
To live in this sort of constant fear is an anti -spiritual attitude.
32
It means that we are preoccupied with the goods of the body that we might lose.
33
Metanoia means you move to a deeper place.
34
Okay, that's really what I said.
35
last week.
36
I bring it up again because in many ways the teaching today is making the same point, but using kind of a different approach or a different image.
37
Last week was fear, things I'm afraid of losing.
38
This week it's detachment.
39
It's what's my relationship to the goods of the world to which I become perhaps inordinately attached.
40
Now, I want to be really careful.
41
as I commence this because, as I've said to you many times, Christianity, authentic Christianity, is not puritanical.
42
It doesn't set soul and body in stark opposition.
43
It doesn't put the spiritual and material in stark opposition.
44
No, no. Everything God made is good.
45
The ensemble of what he made is very good.
46
and that means the trees and the water and the mountains
47
and the sky and the planets and the sun it means The body, yes indeed, it means even insects that crawl upon the earth.
48
Genesis goes out of its way to say all these things are good.
49
Why?
50
Because many spiritual systems and religions play the dualistic game of, yeah, these material things are including my body.
51
They're real, but they're bad.
52
They're just a source of temptation, and the idea is to escape from that.
53
That's not biblical, Rather, think in terms of dimensions.
54
The soul is a kind of depth dimension of the person that includes the body.
55
Thomas Aquinas, in fact, said that.
56
The soul is in the body, not as contained by it, but rather as containing it.
57
That's the depth dimension of the self we call the soul.
58
Conversion is moving from this superficial dimension, the body, to this deeper place.
59
Okay, so we're not anti— We're not against the body, not against the world.
60
What are we against them?
61
turning anything in the world into the summum bonum, - Thank you.
62
Latin for the highest good. Is the world good?
63
Yes.
64
Is it very good?
65
Yes.
66
Is it the summum bonum?
67
No. So, there's the tension at the heart of Genesis, right?
68
All these things that come forth in this beautiful, I would call it liturgical procession from God, are indeed good. But watch.
69
They are creatures.
70
All these things mentioned in Genesis, from the moon and stars and planets to the earth to mountains to animals,
71
were all in different cultures at that time worshipped as gods, weren't they?
72
Genesis keeps saying, "No, no, no, no, no. These things are not gone." Beautiful,
73
good, very good, not sumum bonum.
74
So what's the problem?
75
Well, here's how St. Augustine put it, with typical pith.
76
"When I mistake a creature for the Creator, trouble ensues.
77
And look, I've been at this for a long time as a preacher, as a counselor, as a spiritual director.
78
That's one of the most basic insights you can find.
79
When you're working with someone and they're suffering,
80
they're struggling, Find the place where they have turned something creaturely into the creator.
81
They've taken something good from the world and made it the summum bonum.
82
See, that's where the trouble always is, spiritually speaking.
83
Okay, how does Jesus make this point?
84
Now, listen to his teaching and prepare to have your breath taken away.
85
Jesus said to his apostles, Thank you.
86
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.
87
and whoever loves son or daughter more than me.
88
is not worthy of me.
89
Thank you.
90
Now again, I would say here, put this up against the great religious teachings of the world.
91
There's nothing like this.
92
There's nothing like this.
93
See, what's he choosing on purpose?
94
Of the great goods of the world, he's choosing the highest and the best.
95
Think of a child's love for his parents.
96
Think of a parent's love for his or her children.
97
is those are like the most intense connections you can find, right?
98
Among the goods of the world, They're the highest good.
99
You know, our families, the people we love the most.
100
You say like, "Okay, I'll lose everything.
101
I don't care.
102
Take the house, take the clothes, take my job, but leave my family." You know, and I'll be okay.
103
We recognize them as among the goods of the world, They're the highest.
104
You know, I think of how often we celebrate this in films and stories and legends.
105
Look at a movie like Life is Beautiful.
106
It's all about a father's incredible and intense love for a child.
107
It's a wonderful life or...
108
Even a movie like "Parenthood," I saw that not long ago on TV, and it's a strange, quirky movie,
109
but in some ways it's about these intense loves that obtain between parents and kids.
110
Think of a book like "To Kill a Mockingbird." I hope people still read that.
111
It's not been canceled yet.
112
We read it, of course.
113
Everybody read that book.
114
And it's about a father and a child.
115
Go to a higher level.
116
Think of Cordelia's love for her father and King Lear.
117
These intense connections between parents,
118
children, there's nothing stronger Okay, so revisit it.
119
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.
120
Whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
121
"Uh, what?
122
What are you saying?" What's he saying?
123
There is a summum bonum, there's a highest good, that goes beyond,
124
listen, any of the goods of the world, even the greatest.
125
even the highest.
126
And the spiritual life is all about making the transition to that Love of the Lord.
127
Deuteronomy 6, the Shema prayer, right?
128
"Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God is Lord alone ; therefore, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
129
all your mind, all your soul." One God.
130
We talk about the monotheism of Judaism.
131
We affirm it every time we recite the Creed.
132
Credo in unum deum.
133
I believe in one God.
134
You see everybody how spiritually important that is that the operative word there is one.
135
One.
136
There's only one Summum bonum.
137
highest good.
138
Lots of goods in the world.
139
There are the highest worldly goods, like my love, like my parents and my kids.
140
But there's a good beyond all of those, and that must be the focus of my soul.
141
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, right?
142
Right?
143
How about from Exodus, "I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God." It doesn't mean God's falling into an emotional snit.
144
It's making this point.
145
There's no rivalry possible.
146
"Oh, wait a minute.
147
I mean, but I love my family more than I love God." No. No, unless you love me more than your mother and father,
148
more than your children, you're not worthy of me.
149
See how extraordinary it is?
150
In light of this, revisit that awful story from the book of Genesis about the sacrifice of Isaac.
151
Abraham, "Yes, Lord, here I am.
152
You know Isaac, your son.
153
your beloved, the child of your old age, who will bear the promise.
154
You know Isaac, yeah, yeah, yeah.
155
I'd like you to sacrifice Isaac to me." Now, as we know, the Lord sends the angel to stop the sacrifice, but what's he doing there?
156
He's testing.
157
Does Abraham love the Lord?
158
more even than he loves his child. And you say, "Terrible!
159
What a terrible dilemma !" Yeah, it is.
160
But see, that story, it's a test case.
161
It's pressing us into that space where we have to make that decision.
162
Um...
163
Unless you love me more than your mother and father, more than your children, more than your very life, You're not worthy of me.
164
See, and this is the whole idea, everybody.
165
You see it in the great spiritual traditions of Christianity, of detachment.
166
It doesn't mean we hate the things of the world.
167
No, no. It doesn't mean we hate our family.
168
Of course not.
169
But it means we are sufficiently detached from those relatively lower goods that we might be completely attached to the summum bonum. to what God wants.
170
Hard lesson?
171
You bet.
172
And look, I've been at this for a long time, and It's the heart of the spiritual challenge.
173
It's what every one of us sinners has to wrestle with.
174
Have we turned creatures into the creator?
175
When you do that, major mischief follows.
176
That's absolutely basic in the spiritual life.
177
And so how do we cleanse and purify our souls that the love of the summum bonum might truly be first.
178
Everything hinges upon that.
179
Now bring these two teachings from these two weeks together.
180
Fear nobody.
181
See, don't be afraid of those paper tigers that can just affect the goods of the body.
182
Rather, you've moved to a deeper level.
183
Fear, indeed, the one who can kill both body and soul and Gehenna.
184
Fear of the Lord.
185
Same thing here.
186
Don't be attached to even the best goods of the world.
187
Rather, be attached to God alone.
188
Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God is Lord alone, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind.
189
That's the greatest commandment, and that's the most purifying and cleansing insight in the spiritual life.
190
And God bless you.
