1
Peace be with you.
2
Friends, for this Sunday, I want to talk to you once again about faith.
3
I know I probably talk a lot about that, but as I've said before, it's the most misunderstood word in the religious vocabulary.
4
So here I go again.
5
I want to follow the Bible as it walks around this phenomenon of faith, because faith is so central, but also so misunderstood.
6
In our time, the way it's most misunderstood is faith is a kind of superstition.
7
Faith is a stupid acceptance of things on the basis of no evidence.
8
Faith is believing in any old nonsense.
9
That's not what faith means.
10
It never means that in the Bible.
11
That's the sort of modern rationalism that has caricatured religious faith.
12
But look in the Bible as it talks about it a lot.
13
It never ever means
14
that by faith you know whenever it talks about abraham pay attention to those stories
15
because abraham is our father in faith
16
so those are always about it remember a few weeks ago we had
17
that wonderful passage from the letter to the hebrews
18
that talks about faith as a kind of pressing ahead toward things
19
that we cannot see it's a kind of spiritual adventure right
20
well both reading one today and the gospel shed very interesting light i think on the nature of faith.
21
So, reading one is from a little -known minor prophet called Habakkuk.
22
Habakkuk is a wonderful figure, actually, and the book is brief, but really punchy and interesting.
23
Writing at a time, I'll simplify it, when Israel is going through a lot of struggle, the people are wondering what God is up to, where is God?
24
Listen now to this language.
25
So, he's channeling the voice of the people of Israel.
26
How long, O Lord?
27
I cry for help, but you do not listen.
28
I cry out to you violence, but you do not intervene.
29
Why do you let me see ruin?
30
Why must I look at misery?
31
Destruction and violence are before me. That sound familiar?
32
That's a cri de coeur, right?
33
A cry of the heart that you could, almost any moment in human history, You could credibly hear that.
34
How many times have we said that in our lives?
35
You know, something's going wrong.
36
We're going through times of great pain and suffering, failure, violence.
37
Where are you, God?
38
What's the problem?
39
When are you coming?
40
When are you going to keep your promise to us?
41
So it wells naturally up out of the human heart, this kind of question.
42
Well, where's it coming from, this sort of attitude?
43
Can I suggest this?
44
It's coming from the very narrow place,
45
the very narrow compass of what we can understand and perceive.
46
Think for a second, you know, we have these bodies with this little sensorium of eyes and ears and so on,
47
so we can take in what these senses are capable of taking in.
48
Our minds, you know, can roam around reality, yeah, to some degree, but what we understand of the present,
49
much less the future, it's almost nothing.
50
We have a little tiny swath of reality that we're able to control or understand.
51
And so from that perspective, yes, we tend to say, what's going on?
52
I don't get it.
53
God exists.
54
They tell me God exists, but he doesn't seem to be doing anything.
55
Well, yeah, within this very, very narrow compass.
56
Think of if a page of a great novel was ripped out, and then it was thrown to the wind,
57
and then many months later you happen to stumble upon the single page, and you pick it up, and it's in English, and you can read it,
58
and it's giving you a little tiny snippet of the story.
59
But if you were to say, well, Well, wherever that book comes from, it doesn't make a lick of sense.
60
This book is ridiculous.
61
Well, no, you're reading one page out of a thousand -page story.
62
See, what's required, everybody, now we're going to shed some light on faith.
63
What's required is a surrender in trust to God's perspective,
64
God's plan, God's purpose.
65
I can't see it all I see is violence and destruction, and you're not doing anything.
66
Yeah, yeah, I know.
67
I know.
68
That's what you can see of my creation.
69
Faith is an acceptance in humility and trust of God's vision, plan, purpose.
70
Now, listen to how God answers this cry of the heart that's That's in all of our hearts.
71
Listen.
72
Then the Lord answered me, and he said, Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets so that one can read it readily,
73
for the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint.
74
If it delays, wait for it.
75
It will surely come.
76
It will not be late.
77
The rash one has no integrity, but the just one, because of his faith, will live.
78
All right, so, Lord, where are you?
79
Doesn't make any sense.
80
Have faith, and it means what?
81
That the vision has its time on God's time.
82
God's work is being done.
83
Trust in it.
84
It presses on to fulfillment.
85
Maybe you can't see how it's happening, but it's happening.
86
It will not disappoint.
87
God is never going to give up on his creation.
88
That's a basic biblical truth.
89
God is not about a failed work.
90
No, no. And if it delays, yeah, from my perspective, it's delayed.
91
I don't see it.
92
I don't get it.
93
If it delays, wait for it.
94
See, what is that, everybody?
95
That's the attitude of faith.
96
waiting in trust for what God will do.
97
The rash one has no integrity.
98
Well, that's most of us in our sin.
99
I'm rash.
100
I want an answer now.
101
Put it to me on my terms.
102
Well, that person has no integrity.
103
But the just one, because of his faith, will live.
104
Right.
105
How do we live spiritually?
106
by faith, by an attitude of humble trust in the ways of the Lord.
107
Okay, that's Habakkuk reading number one, and it's preparing us for the gospel, which is, to me, a really interesting text,
108
the way it's pieced together.
109
So, just before our gospel from Luke, what we have is Jesus' command to forgive extravagantly.
110
You know, 70 times, seven times.
111
Forgive, forgive, even your enemies.
112
Forgive, forgive.
113
And the disciples, here's where our gospel today commences.
114
Disciples say to the Lord, increase our faith.
115
They're saying, okay, I get the command, but it's so impossible.
116
Can you at least increase our faith so we can move into the space that you're offering to us?
117
And Jesus replies, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed,
118
you would say to this mulberry tree, be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you.
119
Now, what's he saying here, everybody?
120
Faith is this humble trust in the power of God.
121
Hey, forgive your worst enemy well i can't do
122
that on my own like i can just muster the psychological strength to do it but
123
listen the tiniest bit of trust of humble trust little seed
124
little mustard seed that's all you need to unleash all the power in the world
125
because faith is an openness to god god who makes the universe
126
so the tiniest little look crack in the carapace the the the shell of your own egotism
127
that the tiniest little crack in
128
that will let in enormous amounts of light shift the metaphor
129
will unleash enormous amounts of energy the just person will live
130
by faith right right that's what makes your life wonderful and rich, worth living.
131
Okay, but now watch how this teaching of Jesus is juxtaposed to a little story.
132
I must say, for many years, as I meditate on this gospel, it always struck me as a bit puzzling or a bit of a non sequitur,
133
like, well, how do you get from that statement about faith the size of a mustard seed to this parable?
134
Well, now, listen to the parable.
135
Who among you would say to your servant, who's just come in from plowing and tending the sheep, come here immediately, take your place at the table?
136
No, I mean, wouldn't he rather say to him, prepare for me something to eat, and then after we're all served, then you can eat something.
137
So, he's talking about a master and a servant of some kind.
138
The servant's been out in the field all day, laboring, hot sun.
139
And after this long day of labor comes in.
140
Well, wouldn't it be nice if the master were to say, come on, come on, you're having a hard day to work.
141
Come sit here and let me reward you with a nice meal.
142
No, no, no, says the story.
143
No, you've been working out there in the field all day.
144
All right, now come in.
145
It's now your turn to work inside.
146
Wait on table and serve me and my friends.
147
And afterwards, you have something to eat.
148
Boy, it seems kind of rough, kind of unfair.
149
Shouldn't you give this guy a little reward?
150
Mm -mm.
151
Why not?
152
When you've done all that you've been commanded, say, we are unprofitable servants.
153
We have done what we're obliged to do.
154
Now, here's the point.
155
I think then you'll see how it's connected to the first statement.
156
What's being urged here, everybody, is this stance of humble service.
157
In our egotism, we think God owes us an explanation.
158
God owes us some reward.
159
Hey, I've been at this all day.
160
I've been serving you, Lord, all day.
161
I've been doing your will.
162
Don't I get a little something in return?
163
See, if I'm in that space, where am I?
164
I'm still in that little, tiny, egocentric world where I'm expecting recognition, reward, acknowledgement.
165
Spiritually speaking, that's a waste of time.
166
The humble person is the one who says, no, Lord, I exist to serve you.
167
And in fact, in serving you who need nothing, remember, I've told you that many times, everybody, and it's very, very important in the spiritual order.
168
If we think God needs something from us, then we're all going to be playing this silly game.
169
God doesn't need anything from us,
170
which is why By serving him lifts us up and makes us more alive.
171
Don't think of it as I'm laboring in the hot sun.
172
Think of it.
173
No, by obeying you, Lord, by doing what you want, by breaking out of this little narrow space of my egotism,
174
I now live for the first time.
175
The just man will live by faith.
176
Right, right.
177
break out of this little narrow space where you're playing games with the ego and recognition and who deserves more.
178
And if you're serving God in that way, you're not in the right space.
179
You're still in a kind of servile relationship to God.
180
But what did Jesus say?
181
I no longer call you servants but friends that's what god wants that's what's what's enlivening to us spiritually
182
when we become the friends of god now link these two things together increase our faith
183
if you had the faith of a mustard seed you'd have
184
all the power in the world what's faith It's breaking out of egotism.
185
It's trusting in the power and the love and the plan and the project of God for us.
186
It's surrendering to God's purpose that we might really be alive.
187
That's where Where power comes from, where light comes from.
188
Humility, everybody, and faith are urged upon us by all the spiritual masters.
189
Bernard, you know, was asked, what are the three greatest virtues?
190
He said, humilitas, humilitas, and humilitas.
191
Thomas Aquinas, what opens the door to the spiritual life?
192
Faith, faith.
193
The Bible, without faith, we can't be pleasing to God.
194
Right, right.
195
Faith, everybody, is the way in.
196
A trusting surrender to the love, purpose, and plan of God.
197
And God bless you.
