1
Hello everyone and welcome back to the podcast.
2
I'm Sahar and today I want to talk about something that people ask me about all the time.
3
How do I remember English words?
4
And especially, how do I learn new vocabulary?
5
Now that I'm an English teacher,
6
you might think that Because I'm a teacher, I know every English word,
7
and I never forget anything.
8
But honestly, that's not true.
9
I forget words too.
10
There are words that I have known for years, and there are also words that I sometimes forget.
11
And actually, learning vocabulary has been one of the most interesting parts of my English journey.
12
Because the way I learn vocabulary today is completely different from the way I used to learn it.
13
When I was younger and I was learning English, I thought vocabulary meant memorizing.
14
I thought if I wanted to improve my English, I had to learn as many words as possible.
15
So I would take a notebook and write down a long list of English words and their Persian meanings.
16
You know, my mother tongue is Persian.
17
I could sometimes learn 20, 30 or even more words in one day.
18
And when I finished, I felt really proud.
19
I thought, wow, I learned 30 new words today.
20
But there was a problem.
21
I didn't really learn those words.
22
I only remembered them for a short time.
23
Maybe that evening, I could remember most of them.
24
Maybe the next day, I could still remember some of them.
25
But a week later, when I saw the same words again, many of them looked completely unfamiliar.
26
And that was incredibly frustrating.
27
I remember looking at my vocabulary notebook and thinking, I started this word before.
28
How can I forget it?
29
At that time, I thought there was something wrong with my memory.
30
I thought maybe I wasn't good at memorizing
31
but as I became more experienced as a learner
32
and later as a teacher I realized
33
that my memory wasn't the problem my method was the problem
34
I was trying to memorize words instead of learning them I was collecting words instead of building a relationship with them.
35
And that sounds like a small difference.
36
But it completely changed the way I learn English today.
37
One of the first thing I changed was the number of words I tried to learn.
38
Before I continue, I want you to write for me in the comments that how many words do you memorize a day?
39
Tell me please.
40
okay one of the first things I changed was the number
41
of words I tried to learn I stopped trying to learn huge lists I realized
42
that knowing 10 words really well was much more valuable than knowing 50 words for two days
43
so instead of asking myself how many words did I learn
44
today I started asking how many words can actually remember and use
45
that question changed my learning completely I also stopped learning words
46
completely by themselves this was a very important change before I
47
would see a word write the translation next to it
48
and move on but now when I meet a new word I want to see how
49
that word behaves I want to know what words usually come before it what words usually come after it
50
and how people actually use it in real in real conversation for me a word becomes much easier to remember
51
when it has a story around it for example if I learn a word
52
while reading an interesting story I remembered where I cite I remember the situation I remember the sentence
53
and sometimes I even remember what I was thinking when I cite
54
that is very different from memorizing a random translation from a vocabulary list
55
and this is one of the biggest lessons I learned I
56
don't try to force my brain to remember every new world
57
instead I try to give my brain enough opportunities to meet the world again this is something i didn't understand
58
when i was a beginner i thought
59
if i studied a word once i should remember it forever
60
but that's not how memory works you can learn something today and forget it tomorrow
61
that doesn't mean you failed it it means your brain needs to meet
62
that information again so i started reviewing vocabulary differently i didn't sit down every day
63
and try to memorize my entire vocabulary notebook instead i let old words come back naturally i would see them
64
while reading i would hear them in podcasts i would notice them in videos
65
and sometimes i would use them when i was speaking
66
or teaching and every time every time
67
and every time i met the word again it became a
68
little more familiar after some time i noticed something really interesting
69
i didn't have to translate the word anymore i just understood it
70
that was a huge moment for me because
71
when you are a beginner you often see an english word and immediately search for the
72
mother tongue mother tongue meaning but eventually you want to move you want to move away from that
73
you want the english word to have a meaning directly in your mind you don't want to go through
74
your mother tongue every time and for me reading and listening were two of the biggest reasons
75
this started happening i spent a lot of time around english i listened to english even
76
when i wasn't actively studying i watched videos i listened to conversations i read things
77
that were interesting to me and because of
78
that i kept meeting the same vocabulary again
79
and again sometimes i would learn a word on monday
80
and completely forget it by wednesday then i would hear it again on friday
81
and suddenly i would think oh i remember this word then maybe two weeks later i would see it again
82
and this time it felt even more familiar that's how vocabulary
83
slowly become permanent for me not by sitting for hours
84
and repeating the same word not by trying to memorize hundreds of words in one night in one night
85
but by allowing the same vocabulary to come back into my life again
86
and there was another thing
87
that helped me a lot I started paying attention to the
88
words I actually wanted to use this might sound obvious
89
but it's extremely important there are thousands
90
and thousands of English words you don't need all of them you need the words
91
that are useful for your life your work your interests
92
and the kind of English you want to speak
93
when I was learning English I used to think every word was equally important But now I know that's not true.
94
Some words are extremely useful.
95
Some words are much less common.
96
And some words are simply not necessary for your current level.
97
So I became much more selective.
98
And that made learning vocabulary feel much easier.
99
I wasn't trying to carry the entire English dictionary in my head.
100
I was building my own personal vocabulary.
101
And honestly, that made me much more confident.
102
Because instead of constantly thinking about everything I didn't know,
103
I started noticing everything I did know and
104
that changed my relationship with english i stopped thinking i don't
105
know enough words i started thinking i know a lot
106
and i can keep adding to it and
107
that small change in mindset made a huge difference but there was still one problem i was still forgetting some words
108
so in the second part I'm going to tell you what
109
I did then I want you to pay attention to my
110
tips to my experiences I'm here to help you to speak English
111
and just I want you to support me
112
and my channel by liking by subscribing and by writing small
113
and short comments thank you so much if you have any question about memorizing.
114
If you have any question about memorizing, you can write for me in the comments.
115
You know that I answer all of the comments.
116
Thank you guys.
117
Good luck and have a very good journey in learning English.
118

O que é a Técnica de Shadowing?

Shadowing é uma técnica de aprendizado de idiomas com base científica, originalmente desenvolvida para o treinamento de intérpretes profissionais. O método é simples, mas poderoso: você ouve áudio em inglês nativo e repete imediatamente em voz alta — como uma sombra seguindo o falante com 1-2 segundos de atraso. Pesquisas mostram melhora significativa na precisão da pronúncia, entonação, ritmo, sons conectados, compreensão auditiva e fluência na fala.
