1
Good evening, everyone, and welcome to our community center here in Toronto.
2
Thank you for joining us today as we gather to acknowledge and observe Orange Shirt Day.
3
As many of you know, this day, which coincides with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation,
4
is a solemn reminder of the painful legacy of the Indian residential school system in Canada.
5
The origin of this day is deeply personal.
6
It began with the story of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwapemp woman.
7
When Phyllis was just six years old, she was sent to a residential school.
8
Her grandmother had managed to buy her a vibrant orange shirt for her first day, which she wore with great pride and excitement.
9
However, upon arriving at the school, that shirt was immediately confiscated from her, never to be returned.
10
That taken orange shirt has since become a powerful symbol of the stripping away of culture,
11
freedom, and self -esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.
12
For over a century, it was a government mandate to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro -Canadian culture,
13
deliberately separating them from their families, languages, and traditions.
14
The intergenerational trauma caused by these institutions is still profoundly felt today across communities from coast to coast.
15
But Orange Shirt Day is not merely about reflecting on a dark chapter of our history.
16
It is also about honoring the resilience of the survivors and their families.
17
It is a vital step toward reconciliation.
18
True reconciliation requires us to listen, to educate ourselves, and to take concrete actions in fostering a society where every child matters.
19
Today, by wearing orange, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and commit ourselves to a future of healing and mutual respect.
20
Thank you for being here and for opening your hearts to this essential conversation.

  • Solemn reminder: Lembrete solene. Exemplo: "O dia do camisa laranja é um solemn reminder do passado doloroso."
  • Stripping away: Despojar.
  • Intergenerational trauma: Trauma intergeracional.

- A pausa após frases longas, como "For over a century, it was a government mandate...", para imitar a fluidez natural.
