Come on and sit down because today we're going to talk about game simulators.

Simulation games, or sims, are a beloved, often misunderstood genre of video game.

We've all seen social farming sims like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, but in recent years, sims have started to focus on more of the mundane tasks of everyday life.

You've got your driving sims, your power washing sims, hell, they've even got sims for the day job you slaved away at 8 hours earlier that day.

You're doing the same job 16 hours a day!

Despite that, even the most niche sim has a die-hard fanbase behind it.

And while most fans just like to sit down and relax after a long day with one of these games, there are outliers willing to jeopardize their finances,

relationships, and even their lives if it means experiencing a better simulation.

So, join us as we delve into what makes these sims so addictive, and the crazy lengths some will go in order to blur the lines between video games and reality.

Which I will say, I think that first and foremost, a lot of these games starts off with its dissatisfaction.

Like when I look at stuff like the power washing simulator and the farming one, the farming one is cutting down the crops.

It's like satisfying.

What kind of, is that, is that a kind of, like, I know I'm saying satisfying, but is that a type of game style?

Like the power washing thing where it's like, ah, it feels like something's dirty and I get to clean it.

It's the same with even ingesting that kind of content.

Like when I'm watching verticals or something, I'll watch stuff of people cleaning cars.

It's a very simple process of like dirty to clean.

It's like that satisfaction.

But is that called anything in particular?

Oh god, I feel like there is, I just can't think of the word. But that's...

Maybe?

I don't know.

But yeah, you know what I mean?

I feel like there's gotta be something.

There's something about the before and after.

And also, a lot of these games, people complain, like, you're not actually doing the job.

You're literally just sitting there doing this.

So it's a very easy task, and you're seeing instant progress.

Well, it feels like it's obviously a dopamine hit of some kind.

But it's a different kind of, like, I played that game Vampire Survivors, where you're not, I mean, you're just moving your mouse and it's just shooting for you.

But it's like seeing the waves get cleared.

It feels like it's the simplest form of storytelling, the simplest form of doing A to B and being like, ah, that was nice.

I completed that.

Versus having to labor over something.

Yeah, 100% completion.

That's a thing too.

Yeah, people just knowing that it's just done.

You can be like, ugh.

It's weird.

It's a psychological thing.

I don't know.

Even the guy who made Vampire Survivors, I'm pretty sure that guy was like, I think he made slots or something.

Yeah, he did slot machines and then he tried to translate that into this game and it worked.

I wonder how much that's true across all this board or people that know how to just tap your dopamine.

Mobile games.

Or I just mean even the death simulators, like farming or even pilot simulator and that kind of stuff.

What I was gonna say just to have for the video, but I think that even some of these simulators are

so realistic that don't people use the flying simulator as an actual practice for landing and stuff, an actual plane?

It just goes to show too how that line between reality and video games is, there's such a crazy crossover.

Like this isn't a simulator, but Notre Dame is on fire.

And the only thing they had that was for the blueprint plans was the Assassin's Creed 3D scan they had of it.

How insane is that?

It's fucking incredible.

They also, in the army, they now use Xbox controllers for drones.

I have a feeling that before too long, it's going to go to all remote-controlled warfare.

Like, no humans and people are using robots or, like, 3D-printed fucking drones, robots, all that stuff.

You've got to attack the data centers.

100%.

It's going to be like Helldivers.

That's what's good.

That's the future.

The first question you might ask yourself as you watch gameplay of a simulator is,

Why spend this much time simulating the life of a Trader Joe's employee when you could be playing literally anything else?

Turns out our cranky little chimp brains are pretty easy to understand.

Game publishers have long since cracked the code to creating addictive gameplay loops.

Give a gamer a challenge, a way to complete it, then reward them for completing it, and they'll be drooling into their laps and sinking hours into the screen before you know it.

And this doesn't just work for AAA games either.

Slap the basic loop into almost any mundane task and you could still come out with a pretty addictive game.

Enter the sim games.

In a lot of these games, you're not playing an action hero or a super-powered protagonist.

You're an everyday Joe, like a truck driver, farmer, or even a bureaucrat.

Even a Democrat?

Ew!

And more often than not, people who already have these jobs in real life are the ones playing them in their off time.

And it's easy to see why.

Unlike in a day job, a game's progress is guaranteed.

There's no piece of shit manager stiffing you from a promotion.

there's no distracting co-worker sucking away at your time

and fucking killing your vibes at the work

if you put in the hours in a sim you will

be rewarded in game take fishing for example anyone who's gone fishing is no stranger to the possibility

that a multi-hour trip can result in literally no bites zero fish right

and then you're just like well i got at least got to go out

but in a sim fishing sims have gotten

so advanced in recent years many of them actually allow you

The product even plays videos caught from a submarine of fish during an actual fight

What's insane about that bridge, and it's really interesting, is that how many times have you wanted to do an activity

but it's not the season for it or whatever?

Now it's like if it's winter or cold or a shit day out, you have the familiarity of the thing that you use.

Also, you can be really good in the him and suck in real life.

And that's what I want to do.

I want the satisfaction of just being like, out here in the real world I'm terrible but in here I'm the master of fishing.

Online, you can find dozens of passionate racing sim fans flexing their high-end rigs, while simultaneously trauma dumping about the negative effects the hobby has had on their relationships.

More often than not, both the flexing and the venting can be attributed to one thing, the insane cost of some of these rigs.

In the online community for iRacing, one of the most well-known simulator games, one player comments that sim racing has, quote, taken over his life,

actively pulling him away from his wife and job.

There's no limit to what a racing fan will do to emulate the true feeling of racing a car, aside from actually, you know, getting inside a car and racing an actual car.

One racing sim fan mentions he spared no expense at making the perfect rig.

He's got the VR, he's got the haptics built in, but the one thing he hasn't been able to get is just the right smell.

Unfortunately for those hoping to pinch pennies by not building out an insane rig, the actual software ain't cheap either.

Not only does it provide realistic gameplay, it offers a massive selection of tracks actually modeled after real racing roadways driven on by the pros.

Now, you would think a sim of that quality wouldn't come cheap, and you'd be right.

The game can only be purchased through a subscription service, and each individual car and track is separate charge on top of that.

In 2013, motoring journalist Glenn Butler experienced the sneaky nickel and diming pay model of the game firsthand.

Glenn was tasked with writing a feature on online racing, so naturally he decided to hop onto iRacing so he could experience the most authentic version of the hobby.

At first, everything was smooth sailing as he would offer a complimentary 12-month subscription of the simulator.

After finishing his feature, however, Glenn found himself wanting to keep the subscription going.

He also found himself regularly dropping $11 to $15 per track and car.

Eight years following the end of his free subscription, he even admits to spending several thousands of dollars on a custom rig for his expensive new hobby.

In his post opening up about his addiction, he refuses to admit exactly how much he spent for fear of leaving a paper trail his wife can find.

that he could have easily purchased a real race car with the amount of money he spent on the software, add-ons, and physical rig, which, I mean, you'd have to assume, what, hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Immediately, the man was pinned against his van and handcuffed as the police flooded into the vehicle and began searching his belongings.

Apparently, the police caught the scent of weed coming from the van and approached it to investigate.

When they knocked and nobody answered, they noticed the van was violently shaking.

Not knowing the shaking was coming from the expensive racing rig inside, the cops thought the man was frantically trying to destroy evidence of the mobile drug lab.

Eventually, after they searched his van and found nothing, they let him be.

Not 30 minutes after the man was slammed into and handcuffed against his own van, he returned to his rig and continue the race

Even pro pilots marvel at how accurately games like the most recent Microsoft Flight Simulator have captured the actual feel of flying.

Using satellite images, the game allows pilots to navigate flights much like they do in real life by spotting actual landmarks like lakes,

trains, buildings, and more that exist in real life.

that you could even chart a flight to your exact home address using one of these flight sims now.

In fact, Microsoft flight simulator has gotten

Problems arise, however, when that passion for realism veers into toxicity against other players.

A streamer on Twitch was faced with toxicity when a flight didn't go their way.

While approaching an airport, he decided to take a shortcut that ended up being a little too extreme.

Desperate to avoid a crash, the player took manual control, slowed the aircraft, and safely landed.

After the pretty uneventful stream, he was surprised to see a viewer report him on twitch

they claimed his flying was disrespectful to the aircraft to boeing

and the aviation community as a whole because it wasn't realistic or professional
