1
Help yourself, one of the easiest British English expressions which you are likely to come across, right?
2
Help yourself.
3
Take whatever you want, whatever you need, it's yours.
4
So, you can indeed just take whatever you like, can't you?
5
Well, not necessarily.
6
And does it actually mean that you can have one thing?
7
Does it mean that you can have everything?
8
Does it mean that if something is particularly valuable, you can have that as well?
9
Does it mean that you can actually take it away from the place that it's currently in at the moment?
10
There's so much ambiguity there.
11
And I was reminded of just how dangerous these expressions can be on the back of something
12
which happened between my mother and my teenage daughter relatively recently and you would think I am a native British person.
13
You'd think that I would have been more switched on to this particular issue, but I wasn't.
14
And that gives you just a little indication of how difficult it can be
15
and how important it is to try and manage these sorts of situations when you come up against them correctly.
16
And I would look at those expressions like help yourself or take whatever you like.
17
I would look at those expressions in terms of giving you like a verbal green light.
18
But socially, there are still speed restrictions, if you like, within that verbal green light.
19
So it's about a year or so ago now, we were staying at my elderly mother's house for the weekend and my teenage daughter was with me.
20
And early on the weekend, my mother said to my daughter, take whatever you like, have whatever you like.
21
It's yours.
22
What would you think that actually means?
23
Anyway, funnily enough, I'm native British and I didn't even think about it.
24
Nothing crossed my mind that that was likely to cause a problem.
25
So I ignored it.
26
We had a fantastic weekend and we were driving all the way back down to the south coast where we live.
27
It's quite a long drive from Newcastle in the north.
28
And about four hours into the drive, I received a phone call from my mother to say to me, oh, did, let's call my daughter,
29
just protect her name here.
30
Let's call her Janice.
31
Did Janice take all of my juicy tops?
32
And I thought, oh no, what's happened?
33
So I sort of looked in my mirror as I was driving and And I said to my daughter, did you take the Juicy Tops?
34
And she said, well, yes, I did.
35
And then I said to her, well, how many Juicy Tops did you take?
36
And she had this huge, great bag of Juicy Tops on the backseat of the car.
37
And I'm totally oblivious to this.
38
I didn't realize at all.
39
And to some extent, it is understandable.
40
And, you know, I had to sort of apologize to my mother for what had happened
41
and we sent the juicy tops back maybe not all of the juicy tops um we negotiated later
42
which tops could be kept and which ones had to go back
43
but um you can completely understand what has happened there
44
and you know from my daughter's perspective um she'd done
45
that completely and utterly innocently and she had taken
46
that expression literally like it was an all -you -can -eat buffet you can have literally what you want here
47
and i think a lot of people um maybe non -native speakers
48
and maybe native speakers of english would possibly behave in in in the same way um
49
and i think it's very very important here to realize that you cannot um sometimes take expressions like this
50
literally it is not a green light to actually go ahead
51
and take whatever you want in fact is an invitation to explore individual items
52
and maybe check in again to see if it really is okay to take those particular items.
53
And I would emphasize checking in again.
54
So what then, having caused you guys a lot of confusion, what then does help yourself actually mean?
55
And as is so often the case with English, there is definitely not one particular rule at play here.
56
I would say there's lots of different things that you have to be aware of.
57
The first thing is the actual relationship between the people.
58
So do you have a very close relationship?
59
The closer the relationship, the more freedom that you actually have.
60
But just be aware of my particular story, even in very close relationships, even in a granddaughter -grandmother relationship.
61
there is still so much potential for problems here.
62
The second rule, if you like, or second thing that you should look out for is the actual setting.
63
So for example, if you're sat around a table
64
and someone puts some biscuits on the table
65
and you're all having a cup of tea and a chat and the person says, help yourself, then obviously you can just take a biscuit.
66
It's, you can have two or three or whatever.
67
It doesn't really make any difference at all.
68
But if someone says to you, help yourself to whatever you want from the fridge, That doesn't mean that you can actually empty the fridge of its entire contents.
69
And also maybe you need to be a little bit careful about what you take from the fridge.
70
Maybe there's bottles of wine and things in the fridge as well.
71
So it doesn't literally mean that.
72
It's just giving you an invitation to go and explore basically what's in there.
73
And then probably much better for you to actually check in again to just make sure
74
that it's okay that you do actually take what you're thinking about taking.
75
And I think finally, which is probably the heart of the story, which I just told you before,
76
you need to actually think about the actual object itself and in particular,
77
the value of the object and the emotional connection that somebody has with that object as well.
78
So, you know, juicy tops are quite expensive.
79
If we're talking about electronics, they can be quite expensive.
80
If it's something which is very personal to somebody else, that's obviously sort of carrying a lot of emotional value behind it as well.
81
So to some extent, you have to use sort of common sense with regards to what is being proposed in terms of help yourself.
82
If there's any doubt at all, as soon as you hear that expression, it's probably best just to have a think about what's being proposed and then just double check that that's okay.
83
And sometimes, I mean, for me, I would actually triple check or even quadruple check to be absolutely certain,
84
because one thing that we hate more than anything else is embarrassment.
85
That is simply awful for us to deal with.
86
I have a slightly different example to share with you.
87
And I was at a car boot fair recently, and it was getting towards the end of the morning
88
and I walked past this particular stand and there was this really beautiful light and it looked really, really, really expensive.
89
And it was coming to the end of the morning.
90
And I think the seller was getting pretty bored and wanted to go home.
91
So he actually said, have whatever you like, take it.
92
It's yours.
93
And then he said, it's free.
94
And I looked at this light as I was walking parts.
95
That cannot possibly be free.
96
No chance.
97
It looked really, really expensive.
98
So rather than just take it, which is maybe possibly what my daughter would have done,
99
I said to him, are you absolutely sure?
100
And he said, yeah, mate, take it.
101
It's yours, please.
102
I said, are you certain?
103
Are you absolutely certain that I can do that?
104
And he said, yeah.
105
And I think I was almost getting to the point whereby he was going to throw that item at me.
106
You know, he's going to force it down my throat, literally.
107
But if I sort of pushed him to that point, then I feel really comfortable taking that because he really, really, really doesn't want it.
108
So that's just an example of how I've checked in.
109
That's not necessarily in a social situation, but it is very similar to how I would actually behave anyway in a social situation.
110
When you hear this expression, help yourself, I think it's probably really important to think in your mind about giving
111
that person who said that to you an escape route.
112
Think escape route straight away.
113
So in other words, if they don't really want to give you everything,
114
or if there are particular items that they would rather not really part with, you're then able to give them the opportunity to sort of backtrack on that a little bit.
115
And I think with British people, it is really, really, really important to do that.
116
Otherwise, it can be incredibly embarrassing.
117
So like if I'd actually realized what had been happening in my mother's house with my daughter and those juicy tops,
118
and my daughter had actually sort of grabbed a bag and I'd actually seen it, then I would have actually taken that bag to my mother before we left the house.
119
And I said, oh, look, this is what Janice has taken is it okay firstly
120
that she takes so many and secondly it's okay
121
that these she takes these particular tops
122
and then my mother could have actually said oh well actually no um i would rather keep these ones
123
but she's more than welcome to to take this one
124
so therefore you know nobody loses face there everybody's happy she's taken the valuable ones back that she did actually really want.
125
And she's still given something to my daughter. So everybody.
126
wins and that is the importance of giving that all -important escape route
127
so as you can see understanding british english is all about thinking beyond the actual literal words the literal expressions
128
and thinking about the social situation and the impact from from
129
that perspective actually my daughter said something to me very very recently
130
which sent shivers down my spine It really sort of shocked me and concerned me quite a lot.
131
She said, well, you know, granny's getting older now.
132
She doesn't really drive the car anymore.
133
And do you think she would eventually give it to me?
134
And I thought to myself, oh, gosh, I thought, well, yeah, well, if she does give you that car eventually,
135
we're definitely going to get that in writing before you drive it down to Eastbourne.
136
So, yeah, leave you with that particular thought always make sure
137
that you get confirmation of these situations to avoid those really awkward and tricky situations.
