Choose a disk too big, and oil escapes through the water outlet.

Engineers pick the disc to match the density of the fuel.

Solids keep building up at the outer edge of the bowl, so every so often the purifier shoots them out.

The bowl bottom drops for a split second, and the sludge is blasted into the sludge tank.

The bowl closes, the water seal is refilled, and cleaning carries on without stopping.

Now, what can go wrong?

If the water seal breaks, fuel pours straight out to the sludge tank and an alarm goes off.

If the feed temperature drops, the oil thickens and separation suffers.

Push too much fuel through and there is no time to clean it.

Engine makers want fewer than 15 parts per million of cat finds at the engine inlet.

That is why engineers run purifiers slowly, keep them hot, and check them every watch.
